Euro 2025: Bonmatí says Spain being 'the best team of the tournament' wasn't enough to win trophy
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Being the most skillful and technically best team at the Women's European Championship wasn't enough to get Spain the title on Sunday. The 2023 World Cup winner and 2024 UEFA Nations League title holder still does not have a European title for its stellar generation after a penalty shootout loss to England in the final after a 1-1 draw after extra time. Spain trailed for just four minutes' play across six games in the entire tournament. England led for barely five minutes' play in its three knockout rounds games – and none against Spain. 'We were the best team of the tournament, but sometimes that's not enough,' Spain star Aitana Bonmatí said. Bonmatí cut a sad figure walking to the trophy ceremony platform to collect her trophy as the best player of the tournament, which she began days after being hospitalized with a bout of viral meningitis. Bonmatí's spot kick in the shootout was one of two saved by England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. Mariona Caldentey, whose 25th-minute headed goal seemed to set Spain on track for victory, also had her penalty saved. Caldentey also went close to scoring a second time in the first half, in which tournament top scorer Esther Gonzalez had three chances to score. Early in the second half, Caldentey's Arsenal teammates Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo combined to level the score on Russo's header. 'I'm a bit in shock,' Bonmatí said. 'It was cruel. We played better, created more scoring chances, but in soccer sometimes that's not enough. It all came down to the penalties.' 'I'm sorry for my miss,' said two-time Ballon d'Or winner Bonmatí, whose teammates Caldentey and Alexia Putellas also failed from the spot in a 2-0 quarterfinal win over Switzerland. 'I think this team deserved more. At least not living with this bitter feeling,' Spain coach Montse Tomé said in translated comments. Spain captain Irene Paredes said it was 'hard to look for the positives so soon. Right now, it's a very tough moment.' 'England were happy just to reach penalties but, in the shootout, we didn't perform well,' said Paredes, whose Barcelona team also lost the Women's Champions League final in May to an English opponent, Arsenal. Kitayama captures PGA 3M Open title with big birdie weekend
Kurt Kitayama birdied six of the first eight holes then hung on down the stretch to win the 3M Open on Sunday for his second career US PGA Tour title. With his older brother Daniel serving as his caddie, the 32-year-old American fired a six-under-par 65 to finish 72 holes on 23-under-par 261 at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota. That was good enough for a one-stroke victory over countryman Sam Stevens, who had five back-nine birdies to keep the pressure on Kitayama to the finish. "I feel like the game has been trending and for it to finally pay off now has been awesome," said Kitayama, who was one off the 72-hole tournament record set by Lee Hodges in 2023. Kitayama, who fired a career-low 60 on Saturday after fighting to make the cut on Friday, sank 20 birdies in the final two rounds -- the most by any PGA Tour winner since 2003. "On Friday I was like finding my swing and grinding to make the cut," Kitayama said. "Went to the range to find something and obviously found something on Saturday and it continued today with that unbelievable start that I had. Just kind of went from there." Kitayama also won in 2023 at Bay Hill but this time was even better with his brother as bagman. "It's very special. It has been awesome having him on the bag," Kitayama said. Kitayama jumped from 110th to 53rd in the season points chase ahead of next week's regular-season finale at Greensboro, ensuring his spot among the top 70 in points who advance to next month's FedEx Cup playoffs. Kitayama's stunning start put him on 23-under with a three-stroke lead at the turn. He birdied first on a putt from just inside six feet, the second on a tap-in after his approach landed inches from the hole and the third on a 22-foot putt. A tap-in birdie at the fifth, a 10-footer for birdie at six and a four-foot birdie putt completed the early surge. Kitayama found the deep left rough at 11 and made bogey, but answered with a six-foot birdie putt on 12 and restored his three-shot lead with a tap-in birdie at 14 after dropping his approach two feet from the hole. Stevens reeled off three birdies in a row to reach 22-under with a birdie putt from just inside five feet at the 16th and Kitayama's three-putt bogey at the par-three 17th sent the drama to the par-five 18th. Stevens found the rough on his first three shots but salvaged par to stay one back. Kelly was England's hero again at the Women's European Championship on Sunday, setting up the equalizer in the final before coolly firing home the winning spot kick in the shootout to seal victory over World Cup winner Spain. The 27-year-old Kelly is establishing herself as one of the most clutch players around. 'I just came on to the pitch and wanted to make something happen,' Kelly said. 'I actually missed three penalties in training yesterday. 'I'm really proud to be English right now.' It was back-to-back European trophies for England and yet another final that Kelly had a huge impact on after coming on as a substitute during the Euro 2022 trophy match and scoring the winner against Germany in extra time to clinch a 2-1 victory. Kelly has also been one of England's super subs at Euro 2025. Against Sweden in the quarterfinals, Kelly was brought on in the 78th minute with England trailing 2-0 and had an immediate impact, whipping in two pinpoint crosses for Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang to score and take the match to extra time — with England winning a penalty shootout. Then came Italy in the semifinals and another Kelly-inspired England fightback. Kelly scored the decisive goal in the 119th minute, shooting home the rebound only after Italy goalkeeper Laura Giuliani saved her penalty kick. 'I was adamant I was not missing two on the bounce,' Kelly said on Sunday. Hop, skip and thump It was a typically tense shootout, but Kelly showed nerves of steel with her hop, skip and thump penalty technique. 'It started when I was at Everton. It's something that just works for me. I take my time and take my breath and it just feels normal,' Kelly said. Kelly's performances during the tournament had some clamoring for her to start. However, she was again named on the bench for the final but became an emergency substitute rather than an impact substitute, coming on in the 41st minute after Lauren James was forced off with injury. And it was a trademark Kelly cross from the left for Alessia Russo to head in the equalizer in the 57th minute. 'She's an incredible player and it's nothing short of what she deserves as well,' England forward Lauren Hemp said. 'She's incredible and she's a great friend as well … she's always so inspiring, motivational to all of us. 'For her to come on and get them moments, it's so special for her and I hope she gets many more special moments in the future but she's someone we can count on and it's amazing to have that in your team.' 'Thank you everyone who wrote me off' The double joy of another European champion winner's medal as well as a Champions League one, won in May with Arsenal, has helped draw a line under a difficult period for Kelly. She was unwanted at Manchester City and lashed out at the club as her loan move was completed in January at the end of the transfer window. It was announced during Euro 2025 that Kelly had completed a permanent move to Arsenal after her contract with City expired. 'Thank you everyone who wrote me off, I'm grateful,' Kelly said with a relish on Sunday. Kelly also credited her family and England coach Sarina Wiegman for helping her get through the tough times. 'She gave me hope when i probably didn't have any,' Kelly said. 'There were a lot of tears at full time especially when I saw my family.
