Hurra! The Schmidt's Autobahn buffet is back

Axios11-06-2025
In another sign the world is healing, Schmidt's has finally revived its popular Autobahn buffet.
Why it matters: The Sausage Haus is one of the city's most iconic restaurants, and the $25 buffet is an accessible way to introduce newcomers to its authentic, hearty German food.
I'm happy to report it's just as delicious as I remembered it.
Best bites: Schmidt's is famous for its sausages. You can try four and a spicy stew on the buffet, including the legendary Bahama Mama.
My favorite sides are the German potato salad, made with a tangy vinegar-based dressing instead of mayonnaise, and the green beans mixed with späetzle noodles.
You can't leave without trying an equally famous jumbo cream puff ($5) — but if you did the buffet right, you'll have to take it to go.
The vibes: People are excited, so expect a packed Haus. (I waited about 40 minutes for a table on a Thursday night.) Luckily, there's a Fudge Haus across the street where you can pass the time.
Enjoy live polka music Thursday-Saturday.
Stop by: 11am-9pm Sunday and Monday and 11am-10pm Tuesday-Saturday. 240 E. Kossuth St. Menu.

President Zelensky Finally Clapped Back At That Rude Reporter Who Asked Him About His Suit

Remember this? More specifically, remember when a reporter asked Volodymyr Zelensky why he didn't wear a suit, and it turned into a whole thing? Zelensky replied, "I will wear a costume after this war will finish. Maybe something like yours, maybe something better, I don't know. We will see. Maybe something cheaper." People thought the whole thing was "deranged." Marco Rubio couldn't believe it either. And now, Zelensky is back at the White House along with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. People were wondering if Zelensky would wear a suit after that whole thing in February, and today we found out. He showed up wearing this: "First of all, President Zelesnky, you look fabulous in that suit. You look good," the reporter said. "I said the same thing," Trump said back. "I said the same thing. Isn't that nice? That's the same one that attacked you last time," Trump continued. That's when the reporter says, "I apologize to you. You look wonderful." Zelensky had the last word on this one when he told the guy: "You're in the same suit. You see, I have changed. You have not." Then the whole room erupted in laughter. As this person said, "Even Trump had to admit this was a great comeback."

A German shepherd's intense reunion with his so-called "girlfriend" has melted the hearts of viewers on TikTok, as millions watched the two dogs greet each other with unmistakable joy after being apart. The tender moment had been captured by the canine's owner and shared to the platform on August 14 under @ The resulting clip shows the German shepherd lying in wait at the top of a driveway. As another dog of the same breed slowly walks toward him, the waiting canine rises to his feet. When they meet, the two dogs engage in an affectionate display—tails wagging, noses nudging and mutual sniffing—in what viewers recognized as a warm and familiar ritual between old friends, or perhaps, lovers. The post, which has been viewed more than 4.4 million times, was captioned: "[And] that's how they greet each other every time, one or the other always crouches down. Any dog behaviorist out there; does anyone know what that behavior means?" @ & that's how they greet each other every time 🥰, one or the other always crouches down. any dog behaviorist out there; does anyone know what that behavior means?? ♬ The Winner Is... - DeVotchKa Version - DeVotchKa An on-screen text added further context: "POV [Point of view]: Your dog hasn't seen his girlfriend in a really long time." The short clip drew a flurry of comments, many of which praised the dogs' sweet reunion and speculated about their behavior. One viewer, identifying themselves as a veterinary student, offered an explanation that resonated with hundreds of others. "He shows passive submission as she shows active submission. Both are distance reducing—they want to reduce the visual threat by staying lower to encourage interaction … They like each other!" the commenter wrote. The video quickly found traction among pet lovers, with users remarking on the visible bond between the two canines. "He's courting her," another viewer said. "He's basically showing her that he is not a threat in the most respectful way. It's like saluting an officer in the military when they walk by. Full respect no harm. This post is amazing and so beautiful. You have two amazing animals there." "It is like she walking down the aisle to her prince," a third added. "See even animals knows to drop their ego when it comes to the female they like," a different viewer shared. Newsweek reached out to @ for more information via TikTok. Golden Retrievers Seen in Car Window, but There's an Adorable Surprise

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A dog owner experienced a hilarious twist of fate after parking up beside a car with two golden retrievers leaning happily out of the back window—an exact mirror image of her own pets doing the same thing. The viral TikTok clip shared by owner Krista Baker (@kristabaker629), shared on August 15, shows the empty space between two cars. On one side, a pair of cream-colored golden retrievers stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their heads poking out. On the other side, two darker-shaded retrievers strike an identical pose. The caption playfully dubs the moment "crispy vs creamy," highlighting the golden duo's contrasting coats. The video quickly struck a chord online, amassing 3.5 million views and more than 890,000 likes in just three days. Golden Shades and Coat Care According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), golden retrievers come in three recognized shades: dark golden, golden, and light. While their flowing coats are part of the breed's charm, the AKC notes that grooming isn't overly demanding—monthly professional care is enough. Still, their thick double coat sheds year-round. Owners often need to brush them weekly, if not daily, during peak shedding seasons, with coat rakes or shedding tools recommended to keep tangles at bay. This isn't the first time golden retriever colors have stirred up conversation. Newsweek previously reported on Pink, a striking black-coated retriever who went viral. While many debated whether black golden retrievers truly exist, Pink was ultimately confirmed to be a golden–German shepherd mix. TikTok/@kristabaker629 TikTok users couldn't get enough of the "same same but different" moment, with more than 2,800 comments pouring in. "I wonder if goldens know that they come in many colors or if goldens think that goldens of other shades are totally different kinds of dogs," joked one viewer. Another added: "Toasted vs lightly toasted," a quip that racked up over 12,900 likes. Meanwhile, one golden retriever owner summed up the wholesome vibe perfectly: "The way I'd park my car in that middle spot and just alternate petting each side. I have my own golden retriever, but I must pet all of them." Dozens of comments featured photos of people's own golden retrievers. One of the fun aspects of the breed's variety is that goldens come in different shades, giving owners the chance to enjoy a little variety. As one commenter explained: "I couldn't decide so I had to get two different colors in two different styles and sizes," alongside a picture of their dogs. Another user proudly showed off their pack, which included all three recognized golden shades. Newsweek reached out to @kristabaker629 for comment via TikTok.
