Court slashes jail time for teen who killed Emma Lovell
On Friday, the Queensland Court of Appeal reduced the non-parole period for the now 20-year-old, who was 17 at the time of the attack at North Lakes in 2022.
The young man had been ordered to serve 70 per cent of his 14-year detention sentence for murder, the longest period a juvenile can spend behind bars under Queensland law, after the sentencing judge labelled the crime 'particularly heinous'.
But Justices Bond and Boddice and Freeburn overturned that finding, stating the murder should never have been classified that way.
Justice Boddice said the description was 'unsupported by the evidence' and had led to a misapplication of sentencing principles.
The ruling means the murderer will now be eligible for supervised release after serving 60 per cent of his sentence, eight years and five months, cutting more than 20 months from the time he must spend in custody.
The court was told the boy and another teenager armed themselves with knives before breaking into the Ms Lovell's home late on Boxing Day night.
Ms Lovell and her husband, Lee, tried to push the teens out the front door, but the boy lashed out, stabbing Ms Lovell in the chest and puncturing her heart.
She collapsed on the lawn and died despite frantic efforts to save her. Mr Lovell was also seriously wounded.
The Court of Appeal said 'special circumstances' existed under the Youth Justice Act to justify cutting the non-parole period. These included an early guilty plea, which spared the Lovell family the trauma of a trial, signs of remorse and a willingness to rehabilitate,
and a disadvantaged upbringing marked by deprivation and instability. Positive steps in detention were also considered, including seeking mental health help and further education.
While acknowledging the young man's long criminal record – 84 offences in just two years – the judges said the benefit of his plea had been 'underestimated' and rehabilitation remained possible.

Bryan Kohberger's disturbing porn searches ahead of gruesome student murders revealed
Twisted murderer Bryan Kohberger made disturbing internet searches for women being raped and sexually assaulted while asleep, according to digital forensics experts who were due to testify at his trial. Kohberger's search history included terms like 'raped,' 'forced,' 'sleeping,' 'passed out' and 'voyeur,' according to Heather and Jared Barnhart, who were hired in 2023 to help investigate the psychopath who broke into an off-campus university house in the middle of the night and slaughtered four students, the New York Post reports. 'The easiest way to say it is that all of his terms were consistently around nonconsensual sex acts,' Jared Barnhart told The Daily Mail. Although Kohberger did not sexually assault any of the victims, the father of one of those killed, Kayla Goncalves, believes the killings were motivated by Kohberger's 'weird sexual fetishes.' Others have speculated that his sick plans were forced to change when he was unexpectedly confronted. Kohberger cowardly refused to reveal his plans or motives when he unexpectedly admitted the slayings. The Barnharts' forensics company, Cellebrite, was tasked with going through Kohberger's phone and laptop for any evidence connecting him to the murder of the four roommates knifed in their beds at their off-campus home in 2022. Kohberger had tried to wipe the search history from his devices — even running a data-erasing software on his laptop three days after the killings — but he was not thorough enough, the experts said. While there was no record of the search history, the terms were still found his autofill data on his search engines, Heather said. 'He did his best to leave zero digital footprint. He did not want a digital forensic trail available at all,' she told the Mail. The Cellebrite team also discovered a PDF file about another serial killer and rapist, Danny Rolling — also known as the 'Gainesville Ripper' — whose horrific murders targeting University of Florida students decades ago is eerily similar to Kohberger's heinous crimes. Rolling, who was the inspiration for the slasher classic 'Scream,' murdered five UF students — four women and one man — after breaking into their homes during a four-day spree in 1990. He raped all his female victims, and killed two of them with a Ka-Bar knife — the same weapon Kohberger used, prosecutors said. Rolling was executed in 2006. Kohberger's cell phone additionally contained creepy selfies of the killer posing shirtless and flexing his muscles, the experts said. He also snapped the chilling selfie of himself giving the thumbs-up just hours after he murdered the four University of Idaho students. Heather, Senior Director of Forensic Research at Cellebrite, and Jared Barnhart, Head of CX Strategy and Advocacy at the company, were prepared to testify as expert witnesses at Kohberger's trial before he pleaded guilty last month. Kohberger was sentenced to four life sentences for killing roommates Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.

Armed thugs filmed on camera during violent Gladstone Park home invasion
Armed thugs who shot, stabbed and assaulted a resident during a violent home invasion has been captured on camera. Resident Kemal Akbulut, 60, confronted multiple offenders who broke into his home on Trentham Dr in Gladstone Park about 1.25am on July 24. A group of four men armed with weapons, knives and guns assaulted and stabbed Mr Akbulut and threatened his cousin Birsel Akbulut, 57, with a gun. Shocking footage from the incident shows one of the thugs use a hammer to bash Mr Akbulut who can be heard screaming through the ordeal. One of the offenders points a gun at the victim and asks, 'Where's the money?' Mr Akbulut can be heard saying, 'I'll give you whatever you want.' Another man repeatedly stabs the victim while another offender points a gun at him and films it on his mobile phone. A police spokesman said the offenders allegedly fired a shot inside the home. 'The 60-year-old man sustained serious injuries consistent with a gun shot wound and was transported to hospital,' a police spokesman said. 'The woman was not physically injured.' The offenders fled in a white Haval SUV. 'They remain outstanding and the investigation remains ongoing,' a police spokesman said. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
