Goal hungry Antrim beat Leitrim in Division Three

BBC News22-02-2025

Antrim shook off back-to-back losses in Division Three of the Allianz Football League as they romped to a 4-16 to 1-11 victory over bottom-of-the pile Leitrim at Corrigan Park. The Saffrons' eye for goal shone through with four first-half majors to leave them pretty much out of sight by the half-way point as although Leitrim enjoyed a decent start as they led 0-3 to 0-2 after 11 minutes, Marc Jordan produced a deft finish for the hosts' first goal moments later.Jordan then turned provider with Niall Burns diving to palm home and the third came as Dominic McEnhill tapped home a rebound after initially being denied by Daire O'Shea.Antrim could maybe have had more scores in the opening period but for seven wides and a disallowed goal for a square ball on McCann. However, their fourth major arrived just before the break as Dermot McAleese slipped Fionn Nagle in to finish and help the Saffrons into a 4-7 to 0-6 advantage.Jack Lenehan had the final say of the first half and first of the second as it became a case of Antrim managing the second period.Tom Prior and Darren Cox both hit their second scores of the day for Leitrim, but the hosts stretched pulled further clear with McEnhill, Burns, McCann and substitute Ryan McQuillan chipping in.Leitrim sub Donal Casey grabbed a consolation goal for his team with seven to go, but Antrim were long since out of sight to get back on the winning trail.

Five-goal Wexford knock Antrim out of Tailteann Cup

Antrim's season ended in dismal fashion as they crashed out of the Tailteann Cup with a 5-23 to 2-21 defeat by Wexford in the preliminary quarter-finals. Having narrowly earned a spot in the prelims as the third best of the third-placed teams in the round-robin stage, Andy McEntee's side hoped to stage another stirring run through the knockout rounds after back-to-back semi-final appearances in 2023 and they were well beaten in Wexford Park as they were put to the sword by the Model County's full-forward line of Sean Nolan (2-3), Ben Brosnan (1-2) and Jack Higgins (0-3).Goals from Nolan and Brosnan, and a couple of Darragh Brooks two-pointers, helped Wexford establish a commanding 2-14 to 0-7 lead at the break. And John Hegarty's side pulled clear after the restart and led by 19 points when Nolan struck his second goal to put the Leinster county 3-20 to 0-10 up To Antrim's credit, they refused to give up. After Mark Rossiter raised the home side's fourth green flag, quickfire goals by Patrick Finnegan and Dominic McEnhill and three two-pointers helped them reduce the deficit to eight points. However, substitute Robbie Brooks added a fifth goal for Wexford to bring the curtain down on a disappointing year for Antrim, who were also relegated from Division who qualified for the quarter-finals by topping their group, are the sole Ulster representation left in this year's Tailteann Cup.

Antrim know that they are facing a major challenge to reach Croke Park in Tailteann Cup quest

If Antrim are to return to Croke Park, they will have to do it the hard way, beginning with Sunday's Tailteann Cup preliminary Quarter-Final trip to Wexford Park (1.00pm). Their eight-point win over London in Newry proved to be enough to claim one of the three places on offer for third-place finishers in the group phase, with Leitrim missing out at the expense of New York, who are parachuted in at this, the preliminary last-eight stage.
