Mexico cartels: Security chief of El Chapo's son arrested

BBC News20-02-2025
The Mexican army says it has arrested a key player in the Sinaloa drug cartel in the northern city of Culiacán.José Ángel Canobbio, also known as "El Güerito" (little blond one), is accused of being the right hand man of Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, one of the sons of infamous jailed drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.Mexican security forces say the arrest of Canobbio, who they say was in charge of security for Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, is a severe blow to the Sinaloa cartel. He was captured just hours after the United States added the Sinaloa cartel to its list of foreign terrorist organisations (FTOs), a move which the Trump Administration says will allow it to better combat the criminal groups.
As well as the Sinaloa cartel, the US state department designated seven other Latin American crime groups as FTOs. They are:Jalisco New Generation cartel (CJNG)Gulf cartelNortheast cartelUnited cartelNew Michoacán FamilyTren de AraguaMS-13All but the last two groups are based in Mexico and the Mexican government has come under huge pressure by the Trump Administration to step up its fight against them and the trafficking of the synthetic drug fentanyl they engage in. Read more about how fentanyl gets into the USEarlier this month, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum managed to convince her US counterpart to hold off imposing a 25% duty on Mexican imports to the US for a month. Mexican security forces will hope that the arrest of Canobbio - who was indicted in absentia by a federal grand jury in Chicago in November for allegedly smuggling fentanyl into the US - will go some way towards showing their commitment to the fight against drug trafficking. The indictment accuses Canobbio of being the principal advisor, lieutenant and security chief for Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, one of the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán who took over the running of the Sinaloa cartel after their father was jailed. According to security expert David Saucedo, Canobbio has played a key role in getting the Sinaloa cartel involved in the smuggling of fentanyl to the US.Mr Saucedo told Mexico's Radio Formula, that he expected him to be quickly extradited to the US.

Iran's navy launches country's first military drill since 12-day war with Israel

Iran launched its first military exercise since the end of its 12-day war with Israel, state television reported Thursday, with navy vessels launching missiles at targets at sea in the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. While such drills are routine in the Islamic Republic, the 'Sustainable Power 1404" exercise comes as authorities in Iran are trying to project strength in the wake of a war that saw Israel destroy air defense systems and bomb nuclear facilities and other sites. The state TV report said the frigate IRIS Sabalan and a smaller vessel, the IRIS Ganaveh, launched Nasir and Qadir cruise missiles at targets in the sea, striking them. Coastal batteries also opened fire as part of the exercise. Iran's navy, estimated to have some 18,000 personnel, apparently avoided any major attack during the June war. The navy, based out of the port city of Bandar Abbas, patrols the Gulf of Oman, the Indian Ocean and the Caspian Sea, and broadly leaves the Persian Gulf and its narrow mouth, the Strait of Hormuz, to Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. The Guard's naval forces are known for seizures of Western vessels during the breakdown of Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, as well as closely shadowing passing U.S. Navy vessels coming into the region. Since the end of the war, Iran has increasingly insisted that it is ready to counter any future Israeli attack. Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh said that the country has equipped its forces with new missile, in remarks reported Wednesday by the state-run IRNA news agency. "In response to any potential enemy adventurism, our forces are prepared to use these new missiles effectively.' Meanwhile, Iran has suspended its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, which has been monitoring its nuclear sites as Tehran enriched uranium to near weapons-grade levels amid the tensions. France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the European parties to Iran's nuclear deal, have warned that if Tehran doesn't reach a 'satisfactory solution' to its dispute with the IAEA by Aug. 31, they will trigger a 'snapback' reimposition of all United Nations sanctions on it previously lifted by the accord. While already stung by American sanctions since 2018, analysts warn that renewed U.N. sanctions could further weaken the country's ailing economy.

Musician who praised drug lords in 'narco ballads' shot dead as killing spree continues

Ernesto Barajas, the lead singer for the group Enigma Norteno, was gunned down in Mexico - he was infamous for singing 'narco corridos' dedicated to drug gangs including the Sinaloa Cartel A well-known Mexican singer whose band is famous for 'narco corridos' (drug ballads) dedicated to cartels has been shot dead by two people on a motorbike. ‌ Ernesto Barajas was the lead singer of the popular group Enigma Norteno, which has around four million monthly listeners on Spotify. He is the latest musician in this genre to be killed recently as a wave of extreme violence continues to sweep the country. He was gunned down in the municipality of Zapopan, in the state of Jalisco, with police having opened an investigation. ‌ It is understood two men on a motorcycle rode up to Barajas who was in a parking lot last Tuesday and shot him dead. Another man also died in the attack and a woman suffered a leg injury. ‌ Barajas, 38, was born in the state of Sinaloa and having set up his band aged 18 became well known in Mexico and the US. But he also became linked with drug cartels and organised crime, receiving a written threat before playing in Baja California in 2023. He continued to mix his singing, where he collaborated with other famous Mexican musicians with links to cartels. He sang about 'Los Chapitos', the sons of jailed drug boss Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, and also the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) - Nemesio Ruben 'El Mencho' Oseguera. It is common in Mexico for drug gangs to pay musicians to make songs about their exploits and perform for them, but at the same time this also makes them a target in turf wars. Barajas repeatedly said he was not connected to organised crime but did admit gangs had on occasions asked him to compose songs. "As long as you behave respectfully and don't offend other groups, you may or may not compose the corrido," the vocalist said in an interview with journalist José Luis Montenegro in April 2022. His song about El Chapo referred to his escape from Altiplano prison on July 11, 2015, where he used a tunnel. Violence in Mexico has reached peak numbers following the break up of the Sinaloa Cartel in recent years, leading to around 30 deaths a day. And singers of narco corridos have been targeted before with five members of the regional group, Fugitivo, killed in the north of Mexico last May. Their bodies were found on wasteland, Tamaulipas state prosecutor Irving Barrios said, adding that nine people had been arrested. The people detained belonged to the Los Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel.
