‘Not right', says deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar as more cities join Independence Day meat ban in Maharashtra

Time of India4 days ago
Thane: With protests intensifying against Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation's (KDMC) order to shut all slaughterhouses and meat shops in its jurisdiction on Independence Day, deputy CM Ajit Pawar Tuesday said he did not agree with the ban.
"I can understand a ban for a few days when it is a question of faith.... But a ban on national days will be difficult," he said.
Amid the controversy, a few more municipal corporations, including Nagpur and Malegaon, Tuesday decided to ban meat and animal slaughter on Aug 15.
KDMC additional municipal commissioner Yogesh Godse said the order is in line with a 1989 state govt directive implemented annually in several corporations.
"This is not a ban on eating meat. Anyone can consume meat if they choose, but slaughterhouses and shops will remain shut for the day," he said.

Municipal commissioner Abhinav Goel said KDMC has issued the order for the last 15 years. "If people are protesting, we will definitely take their sentiments into account," he said.
While urban development department principal secretary K H Govindraj did not respond to media queries, officials clarified there is no state govt mandate for a meat ban on Independence Day, and local bodies decide on such matters based on civic resolutions.

The KDMC order has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders, citizens, and the Hindu Khatik community, which is traditionally engaged in the meat trade, who argued that the ban infringes on personal choice and unfairly targets a particular community.
Among the voices against the ban was Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aditya Thackeray who demanded suspension of the KDMC commissioner. "What we eat on Independence Day is our right.
In my home, even on Navratri, our prasad includes prawns and fish — this is our tradition and our Hinduism," Thackeray said.
Calling out the KDMC order, Pawar said: "I can understand a ban for a few days when it is a question of faith. For instance, on Ashadhi Ekadashi, Mahashivratri and Mahavir Jayanti. But a ban on national days like Republic or Independence Day, will be difficult. In our country and state, some people are vegetarian and others are non-vegetarian."
He added that in several communities, non-vegetarian fare was part of the traditional cuisine. "In the Konkan, people add fish to their vegetables. It is not correct to ban their food. In the rural areas, people cut a goat before an event. Even the adivasi community is largely non-vegetarian," he pointed out.
Shiv Sena MLA Vishwanath Bhoir, however, supported the KDMC order, remarking that "no one will be harmed by not eating meat for a day".
Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh accused KDMC of arbitrarily targeting a particular community. "These bans hurt the local economy and farming sector. Such orders are never imposed on fish markets — only on meat traders," he said.
NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Awhad condemned the ban, claiming it violates personal freedom. He even vowed to eat mutton at a house in Dombivli on Aug 15 in protest. Former MNS MLA Pramod Patil also lashed out at KDMC and asked whether non-vegetarian restaurants, like KFC and McDonald's, would also be forced to down shutters on Aug 15. "No such ban exists in Thane, Ulhasnagar, or Navi Mumbai. Why has our commissioner decided this? Everyone has the freedom to eat what they want," Patil said, demanding the order's immediate withdrawal and urging police to ensure peace.
The Hindu Khatik community has warned of staging a symbolic protest by setting up a meat shop outside the KDMC office on Aug 15 if the order is not withdrawn.

On India's 79th Independence Day, The Bharat Climate Forum Marks First-year Milestones, Propelling India Onto The Global Stage As A Climate Leader

NEW DELHI, Aug. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bharat Climate Forum (BCF) marks India's 79th Independence Day by revealing its 2025 milestones, which demonstrate that the platform has successfully aligned India's economic ambition with climate leadership. In his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the importance of domestic manufacturing. "True independence comes when we are self-reliant in critical technologies," he said. BCF is driving this mission, setting the stage for creating a Viksit Bharat by 2047. A collaboration between Dalberg Advisors and the Council of International Economic Understanding (CIEU), BCF is a response to the pressing need for swift and decisive measures to solve the climate crisis. Amitabh Kant, India's G20 Sherpa, said: "India's aspiration to become a $30 trillion economy and a developed nation by 2047 hinges on our ability to lead in clean technology manufacturing. Unless we decisively strengthen the battery value chain, mineral processing, and advanced manufacturing capabilities, we risk remaining import-dependent and missing the opportunity to lead globally. The Bharat Climate Forum is helping bring these critical issues to the forefront." A Year of Milestones and Momentum • After the inaugural event on January 10, 2025 which brought together over 300 leaders, including Shri Piyush Goyal, Shri Ashwani Vaishnaw, and CEOs from India's leading renewable energy and manufacturing companies, BCF launched the Bharat Cleantech Manufacturing Platform (BCMP), which unifies stakeholders across policy, industry, finance and research, driving indigenized manufacturing across six priority sectors: solar, wind, BESS, e-mobility, green hydrogen and bioenergy. • A huge milestone was achieved when BCF's recommendations were put into action by policymakers: the National Manufacturing Mission (NMM) blueprint by BCF was shared with the Government of India and the recommendations informed the Union Budget 2025 announcements on cleantech manufacturing support. BCF's suggestions on how solar, wind and battery manufacturing can be indigenized are now being used to guide ministry-level discussions on localization targets and supply chain development. • BCF and CIEU signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Solar Alliance aimed at building global leadership in cleantech manufacturing. • The Cleantech Supply Chain Finance Working Group led by the Finance Industry Development Council was launched after the success of the Credit Summit, a gathering of leading banks, non-banking financial companies and policymakers hosted by BCF in June. • BCF tied up with the Ministry of Education and the Department of Higher Education to shape a national initiative that equips the top 100 engineering colleges with curricula and training programmes centred on emerging industrial needs in solar, wind, battery and other priority sectors. • BCF held the Aironomics Summit in May 2025, which dealt with India's air pollution challenge. The event was attended by Smt. Rekha Gupta, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi as well as Delhi Government officials and industry CEOs including Paytm's Vijay Shekhar Sharma. "India's economic growth and climate goals can no longer be pursued in isolation. The Bharat Climate Forum is helping to create the bridge between industrial ambition, policy frameworks, and climate resilience," said Jagjeet Sareen, Global Climate Co-Lead at Dalberg and Member Secretary, BCF. "In our first year, we've shown that coordinated action can deliver benefits for the economy, the environment, and communities alike." GST Revolution Ahead: Experts Decode PM Modi's Plan To Simplify India's Tax Structure

/ Aug 16, 2025, 12:27PM IST Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day promise of next-generation GST reforms has triggered strong expert responses. Economist Ved Jain highlights that after eight years, India is ready to move from multiple slabs to a simpler two or three-rate system. Former CBEC Chairman Najib Shah says merging current slabs could free up consumer spending and fuel demand. Pankaj Mohindroo of ICEA believes GST rationalisation is essential for 'Viksit Bharat @ 2047' and will help both industry and consumers. Experts agree the shift is not just about tax, but about a structural reform that could shape India's economic future.

Maharashtra CM Fadnavis flags rising property prices in Mumbai despite major infra push

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that despite sweeping infrastructure improvements across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which should have eased supply constraints and moderated property prices, housing prices across the city and peripheral areas continue to rise, underlining the challenges of affordability in India's most expensive real estate market. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency Fadnavis pointed to the expansion of metro lines, highways, and connectivity corridors across MMR that have opened up new catchments for development. 'Normally, with so much infrastructure growth, prices should stabilize. But in Mumbai, they are still going up,' he said while interacting with developers at an Industry event, noting that the demand-supply imbalance remains a structural hurdle. Over the past decade, Mumbai region has seen a wave of big-ticket infrastructure projects aimed at easing congestion and expanding the city's boundaries, from the 21.8-km Mumbai Trans Harbour Link ( Atal Setu ) and the Coastal Road to the rapid expansion of the metro network. The Navi Mumbai International Airport , the Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, the upcoming Bandra–Versova Sea Link, and upgrades to the suburban rail network are further reshaping how people and goods move across the region. Together, these projects have dramatically improved connectivity, unlocking new catchments for housing and commercial development. In theory, this scale of infrastructure expansion should have helped moderate property prices by dispersing demand more evenly across the region. Yet, prices in Mumbai have continued to climb despite these transformative gains, Fadnavis pointed out. The CM also highlighted the government's long-term growth strategy, including the plan to create a 'Fourth Mumbai' around the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Palghar district. The new urban centre will be backed by significant infrastructure push aimed at attracting cutting-edge industries. Together, these are expected to spur large-scale housing and economic activity. Fadnavis credited the developer community, particularly to collaborate with the government in shaping the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA) in Maharashtra and in drafting Mumbai's Development Plan. 'It was one of the first times everybody accepted the plan because it was made with industry participation,' he said. He also underscored the role of redevelopment in reshaping Mumbai—ranging from slum rehabilitation and cluster projects to the BDD chawl redevelopment, billed as Asia's largest urban renewal programme, with completion targeted by 2029. To deliver faster results, he urged developers to adopt global construction technologies that allow high-rises to be built in record time. 'From Fourth Mumbai to redevelopment at the city's core, the opportunities are enormous,' Fadnavis said. 'But unless we bring speed, affordability, and global standards, the dream of a truly reshaped Mumbai will remain incomplete.' He also encouraged the developers to form alliances with the government and even global institutional investors to develop key projects and participate in the transformation of Mumbai through large-scale redevelopment, affordable housing, and the upcoming Third and Fourth Mumbai around the northern periphery of the region.
