PMM Convocation: Top Graduate Fulfils Dream Of Sharing Stage With Parents
The 23-year-old Diploma in Accountancy graduate was named the recipient of the Director's Award and the Academic and Co-Curricular Excellence Award at the convocation ceremony today, in recognition of his hard work and discipline over three years at PMM.
Although he obtained 8As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, his dream was left unfulfilled for five years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a setback that became the driving force for the son of a lorry driver and food caterer to work harder during his studies.
'I'm really happy and thankful. This achievement wouldn't have been possible without my parents' prayers and sacrifices. They worked hard to support the family and give us a proper education.
'I used to feel down and nearly gave up, but the support of my parents, lecturers and friends gave me the strength to keep going, and I dedicate this success to all of them,' he told reporters here today.
Earlier, Kishendran received the award from Polytechnic and Community College Education Department director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Zahari Ismail at the 23rd PMM Convocation Ceremony.
The third of six siblings from Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur, said he had been keenly interested in accounting since Form Four.
Kishendran said he would wake up as early as 4 am every day to work on assignments, ensuring he managed his time wisely to actively participate in various polytechnic programmes while achieving excellent results academically and in co-curricular activities.
He also earned an overall Merit KITA score of 88.75 per cent, the comprehensive assessment system of Malaysian polytechnics that evaluates academics, leadership, co-curricular activities, and student personality.

Security guard braves dumpsite stench to earn extra income for family
GUA MUSANG: For the past two years, Wan Azli Wan Abdullah has grown accustomed to the pungent, fishy odour of rubbish as he searches for recyclable items to earn extra income to support his family. The 37-year-old security guard at a private company spends his spare time collecting discarded items at a dumpsite near Kampung Kundur here. "With a salary of RM1,700 a month, it's just not enough to cover living expenses, especially with rising costs. That's why I took this job, even if people look down on me. "I don't mind what others say. I just want to earn halal money to support my wife and children, aged four to 10," he told reporters at the dumpsite recently, adding that among the items he picked up were plastic bottles and cans. Wan Azli, who lives in Kampung Rahmat, said he always took pride in his work, despite being labelled a rubbish collector. "I will spend the week collecting all these items before selling them to scrap dealers. "The most valuable items are copper, which I can sell for RM25 per kg, while beverage cans go for RM3 and plastic bottles for RM0.40 per kg," he said, adding that he could earn up to RM400 a month. Wan Azli said he spent four days a week collecting and separating solid waste from 8am until noon. "Sometimes my father-in-law, Hassan Sudin, 58, joins me in collecting these used items. In fact, there are almost 20 others who also make a living at this dumpsite," he said. – Bernama

Dozens injured after magnitude-6 quake strikes Sulawesi, Indonesia

Thirteen of the injured have been rushed to medical facilities in Central Sulawesi province's Poso and Tokorondo districts due to injuries sustained by the falling debris from a damaged house of worship, said Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). The quake also damaged a church in Masani village, while the number of displaced residents is still being verified. The quake struck Poso at 5.38 am on Sunday (2138 GMT Saturday) with the epicentre at a depth of 10 kilometres. The authorities said there was no potential for a tsunami. The tremor, which lasted about 15 seconds, was strongly felt in several villages in Poso Pesisir district, prompting residents to flee their homes. In neighbouring Sigi district, the quake was felt moderately for about seven seconds, but no casualties or damage were reported.
