Deer deaths in Pune zoo due to Foot and Mouth Disease, says ICAR-NIFMD report
The deer had died between July 10 and 14, following which bio-samples were sent to various laboratories, including ICAR-National Institute of Foot and Mouth Disease (ICAR-NIFMD) in Bhubaneswar in Odisha, they said.
'According to the report from National Foot and Mouth Disease Research Centre, the deer had contracted Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), which is the primary cause of their death," said a statement from Pune Municipal Corporation's Garden Department.
FMD is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals. PTI SPK BNM

The pause was announced to allow the UN and aid agencies to operate amid the worsening hunger crisis in Gaza. Although restrictions have eased, the volume of humanitarian assistance reaching the Palestinian territory remains significantly below what international aid agencies deem necessary. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected responsibility for the worsening conditions in Gaza, instead directing criticism at the United Nations. Meanwhile, the Israeli military has denied accusations that it is using starvation as a weapon, stating that it has worked in coordination with the UN and other international organisations to 'increase the scale of humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip." Despite these assertions, the situation on the ground remains critical. The World Health Organisation (WHO) raised fresh alarms on Sunday, reporting that malnutrition in Gaza has reached 'alarming levels." According to WHO data, of the 74 malnutrition-related deaths documented in 2025, 63 occurred in July alone. Among the dead were 24 children under the age of five, one child over five, and 38 adults. 'Most of these people were declared dead on arrival at health facilities or died shortly after, their bodies showing clear signs of severe wasting," the UN health agency said. WHO also emphasised that the worsening conditions were 'entirely preventable," adding: 'Deliberate blocking and delay of large-scale food, health and humanitarian aid has cost many lives." The World Food Programme (WFP) painted an equally grim picture, estimating that a third of Gaza's population had gone without food for days. The agency said 470,000 people were 'enduring famine-like conditions." UN emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher acknowledged Israel's implementation of tactical pauses in fighting and said UN teams would make every effort to deliver aid during these intervals. Tamil Nadu CM Stalin discharged from Chennai hospital after therapeutic procedure
Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin was discharged from a private hospital in Chennai on Sunday evening after undergoing a successful therapeutic procedure to treat variations in heart rate, the hospital said. After experiencing mild dizziness, the CM Stalin underwent medical examination and a procedure performed by a team of expert doctors.(PTI) On July 21, Stalin experienced dizziness during his morning walk and underwent medical examination, followed by a procedure performed by a team of expert doctors. According to the Apollo Hospital, where the CM was admitted, Stalin has been declared fit for discharge and has been advised to resume his regular activities after three days of rest. After experiencing mild dizziness. Even after being hospitalised, CM Stalin continued reviewing government programmes and initiatives from the hospital room, PTI news agency reported. He also underwent an angiogram earlier, after which no blockage was found in the blood vessels, senior DMK leader and Minister Duraimurugan told PTI. Apollo Hospital had earlier said that after performing several diagnostic tests, it was found that the giddiness was only due to some variations in the heartbeat. An angiogram was performed afterwards, which came out to be normal. Meanwhile, earlier on Sunday, CM Stalin had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting urgent demands related to education, infrastructure, railways, and the welfare of people in Tamil Nadu. In his petition, CM Stalin demanded that funds under the Samagra Shiksha scheme be released and urged the Centre to implement railway projects that were sanctioned over a decade ago but still remain inactive. The petition emphasised the need for the centre's cooperation in implementing crucial projects and addressing long-pending issues. The petition sent to the centre, also raised strong concerns over the continued arrest and detention of Indian fishermen and the seizure of their boats by the Sri Lankan Navy. The Chief Minister urged the Prime Minister to intervene and find a permanent diplomatic solution personally.

Insurer rejects mediclaim citing 'mismatch' over Google Timeline; consumer forum gives man relief
Valsad: A Gujarat resident was shocked when an insurance company rejected his mediclaim on the grounds that his Google Timeline did not match the location of the hospital that had treated him. The man from Silvassa had to knock on the door of the Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum in Valsad district, which ruled in his favour and directed the company to settle the claim with interest. In its order of July 14, made available recently, the president of the consumer forum, B G Dave, directed the firm to pay Rs 48,251 (mediclaim amount) with 8 per cent interest within 30 days of the order. Vallabh Matka, who had a mediclaim policy from Go Digit General Insurance Limited, was admitted to a private hospital in Silvassa in September 2024 for four days after he contracted viral pneumonia. After his discharge, Matka submitted medical bills to the insurance company for reimbursement. However, it rejected the claim, saying there were discrepancies over his Google Timeline. Google Timeline, earlier called Location History, creates a map of the places a person has been and the routes the individual has taken on each of their devices. Left with no option, Matka approached the consumer forum, a quasi-judicial body with the power to make decisions and resolve certain disputes like a court. After being issued a notice, the company told the forum that there were many inconsistencies concerning Matka's claim. "Upon internal verification of the claim, we noted that there are multiple discrepancies in submitted bills, indoor case papers and we have also noted discrepancies from insured statement to his verified Google Timeline," the company told the forum. As per the customer's statement, his phone was with him during hospitalisation, but as per Google Timeline, "the hospital location was not found in the patient's Google Map", it said. The forum, however, relied on the hospital's statement and other records. "In the report by the insurance company, it has said that the patient was admitted to the hospital and received treatment but it seems that they wanted to reject the claim and are giving false reason that the Google map timeline is not matching," the forum said, ordering the firm to settle the claim and pay 8 per cent interest.
