Mariners reliever Trent Thornton carted off field after injury coming off mound in 9th inning
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle reliever Trent Thornton was injured while coming off the mound on a ground ball in the ninth inning Thursday night and was carted off the field during the Mariners' 6-0 win over the Texas Rangers.
Thornton was using crutches to get around the Mariners' locker room after the game and the team did not have an official diagnosis of the lower left leg injury he sustained on the grounder hit by Adolis Garcia with two outs.
Thornton said he feared it was a significant Achilles injury and that he would have an MRI on Friday.
'It's probably the Achilles, but that's just speculation, so I'll find out tomorrow,' Thornton said. 'Very frustrating.'
Thornton entered the game to start the eighth inning and retired the first five batters he faced. The right-hander then had a full count on Garcia before the righty hitter hit a grounder on his 95 mph fastball on the lower outside corner.
'I threw the pitch, and as soon as I turned, I thought I broke the guy's bat and it hit me in the back of the leg, and I fell,' Thornton said.
Thornton said his first reaction at that point was to try to look at his leg to see what had happened.
'I tried to get up and just couldn't even put pressure on it at all,' Thornton said. 'It didn't hurt. It's just achy and numb. But I guess I don't know. I'm still trying to process this a little bit, and I'll find out more tomorrow.'
Mariners manager Dan Wilson said he thought Thornton pitched 'fabulous' before the injury.
'We'll find out more tonight,' Wilson said. 'Hoping for the best.'

LYON, France (AP) — Czech Republic international Pavel Šulc has completed a move to French club Lyon from Viktoria Plzeň. Because, you know, for the last two months, the Mariners have had half an infield consisting of rookies, right? Ben Williamson, who was not necessarily that top, top prospect, but he was handling third base. He gets sent down after they acquired Eugenio Suarez, predictably, but Cole Young is, he's the guy at 2nd base, and he hasn't necessarily faced too many lefties. He hit a home run on, uh, on Thursday that I did not think he could physically do, which was to the 2nd deck. I know it was originally measured at 470. It was, you know, changed to 456. I don't care. I didn't think he could hit 430. The fact that he has that kind of juice, I did not expect. But he's an interesting character in this Mariners lineup, one that has been revamped and is now basically all veterans who have proven a lot of stuff at the Major League level. Cole Young though, who is a first round pick, one of the youngest players in baseball, if he can become even an average hitter batting 7th, 8th or 9th, that's really what's gonna put this lineup over the top because right now he looks like the weak link on paper. Because he's this young kid who hasn't really, you know, seen a lot of Major League pitching, but he's shown flashes over the last month and, he could really take this lineup to a whole different level. So he's definitely someone I am watching very closely down the stretch for the Seattle Mariners. Close
