Agra man in merchant navy dies after falling into sea from docked ship in Indonesia; body to be brought back in a few days
The body is expected to arrive in India in a few days. Manish Chandra Yadav, 33, a chief officer, was boarding the ship from a jetty and fell into the sea and "drowned" on July 24. His crewmates pulled him out of the water, but he had succumbed to his injuries. His family was informed later that day.
An official from Navsug Marine Services, on the condition of anonymity, said, "It is unfortunate that the incident happened. We are sending the body back to Manish's native place from Indonesia."
Manish's brother Avneesh Chandra Yadav, who works at a private company in Noida, said that they are in touch with the ministry of external affairs and the shipping company to ensure his mortal remains are brought back in a few days. "Manish got married to Reena in Nov 2019 and had two children — Gargi, 4, and Garv, 2. They lived in Awas Vikas Colony in Agra," he added.
Manish's father Ramesh Chandra Yadav, a sub-inspector with UP police, told TOI, "Manish had gone out with three others to buy essentials while his ship was docked on Batam Island.

'Slapped, kicked, punched repeatedly': Drone rumours claim life in UP; mob lynches beggar mistaken for thief
BAREILLY: A 50-year-old unidentified man who was mistaken for a "drone thief" -- someone who is presumed to use a drone to recce an area before targeting houses for burglary or arson -- was lynched by a mob in Bhojipura area of Bareilly district around 8.30 pm on Thursday. Police said six to eight locals were involved in the brutal assault which left the victim -- a mentally-ill beggar from some other village -- unconscious with severe head injuries and bruises all over the body. Hospital authorities later declared him dead. The incident is said to be the "first such death in the state caused by drone-related rumours". There has been rising paranoia around "drone-aided thefts" in several parts of UP. Villagers have been conducting night patrols armed with sticks, torches and even airguns in response to low-flying drone sightings -- some of them rumours while a few others cases of unmanned aerial vehicles operated by govt departments for surveying or welfare work. "The man, who was shabbily dressed, was slapped, kicked and punched several times by the locals. He was initially allowed to go, but again stopped by the same group when he didn't reveal his identity. When they again started assaulting him, a security guard alerted cops. However, by the time local police arrived, the man was already unconscious. We're trying to collect more details about him," Bhojipura SHO, Praveen Solanki, said on Friday. A local villager said that the man, with 'Ram' inscribed on his head, was spotted roaming in Memaura village under Bhojipura thana on Thursday evening. Fearing a potential theft due to recent rumours -- much of it unsubstantiated -- that thieves have been using drones to map an area or individual property before targeting them, villagers raised an alarm and gathered to thrash him. The merciless assault eventually saw him collapse. SP (north) Mukesh Mishra told TOI: "Four accused — Nirdesh Kumar (34), Harprasad Singh (36), Charan Singh (28) and Vikas Kumar (29) — were arrested on Friday. An FIR under BNS sections 103 (murder), 115-2 (provoke breach of peace), 352 (criminal intimidation), 126 (wrongful restraint), among others, were registered against six named and two unnamed persons." The victim's body has been kept in a mortuary, Mishra said, adding, "We'll wait for 72 hours, as per norms, for someone to turn up and claim the body. If no one comes, we will conduct his postmortem and cremate him." Last month, too, a 20-year-old man was thrashed by a mob in Bareilly's Sirauli area after being mistaken for a "done thief". He was rushed to hospital and managed to survive. Similar incidents have been reported from several villages in Ghaziabad. Locals there took matters into their own hands, and armed themselves with rods and sticks after a string of circulated videos sparked fears of burglary recces being carried out with drones. TOI extensively reported some of these incidents. Sensing a law and order issue, UP police have now launched night patrols from 11 pm to 3 am in some areas, along with awareness drives with village heads, and created a "drone register to identify legitimate drone operators". Police clarified that drone use at night has been barred entirely to prevent further panic. A former primary school teacher accused of brutally murdering a married couple in front of their two daughters at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas had previously displayed alarming behaviour towards young girls at a school in Texas, a concerned parent has claimed. Andrew James McGann, 28, is accused of stabbing Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, to death on Saturday, while their daughters, aged 9 and 7, fled the scene unharmed. Authorities said McGann later confessed to the killing and was charged with capital murder following a five-day manhunt. In an interview with New York Post on Friday, Zacharri Polyak, whose son attended Donald Elementary School in Flower Mound, Texas, when McGann was a teacher there, alleged deeply troubling past behaviour. 'This monster was around our children,' he said. Polyak recalled that McGann once put a little girl on his lap and said 'things like, 'I wish I could date you, I wish you could be my girlfriend,' just really nasty like grooming behavior.' Superintendent Jared Cleveland confirmed McGann's hiring, but stressed that he 'has not at any time come into contact with Springdale students or the families we serve,' according to 5 News. The shocking murders took place on a hiking trail in the Arkansas state park. Authorities say McGann ambushed the Brink couple, stabbing them to death while their daughters escaped and raised the alarm. He was eventually located and arrested mid-haircut at a local barbershop. McGann appeared in court on Friday (local time) and was ordered to be held without bail. Investigators have not yet established a motive for the killings.

Arms smuggling modules busted in Amritsar: 13 pistols, ammo seized; juvenile among 11 held
At least 13 pistols and ammunition were recovered as Amritsar police busted three cross-border illegal arms smuggling modules with links to Pakistan on Friday, officials said. The weapons seized by counter- intelligence wing, Amritsar. (HT) Amritsar commissionerate police arrested four operatives of two modules, including a juvenile, and recovered seven sophisticated pistols from their possession, said Punjab director general of police Gaurav Yadav. Those arrested have been identified as Sikanderjeet Singh (19) of Bhagwanpura village in Tarn Taran; Pradeep Singh alias Babbal (43) of Antarjami Colony, Amritsar; Jarnail Singh (34) of New Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Amritsar; and a 17-year-old juvenile from Tarn Taran. 'The recovered weapons include two Glock pistols, four .30-bore Star pistols, and one .32-bore pistol, along with six live cartridges. Apart from recovering weapons, police teams have also recovered their motorcycle, which they were using to deliver consignment,' Yadav said, adding that preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were in touch with Pakistan-based smugglers and retrieved weapon consignments near the international border. The weapons were meant to fuel gang rivalries and disrupt peace in the region, he said. The DGP said that further investigation is underway to trace forward and backwards linkages to unearth the entire smuggling network. Amritsar commissioner of police (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that preliminary investigations revealed that the accused, Sikander, along with a juvenile, was in touch with Pak-based smugglers. 'Their home is close to the international border, and they retrieved the drone-dropped consignments from the locations provided to them,' he said. The other module was busted with the arrest of the accused, identified as Pardeep and Jarnail. 'The weapons were received from Pakistan smugglers and were meant for deceased gangster Ravneet Singh alias Sonu Mota, he said, adding that further investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are likely in the coming days. Two FIRs under relevant sections of the Arms Act have been registered at police station Gate Hakima in Amritsar and police station B-Division in Amritsar. Six pistols seized, 5 arrested In another case, counter-intelligence (CI), Amritsar busted a cross-border illegal arms smuggling module with links to Pakistan and arrested five of its operatives and recovered six sophisticated pistols from their possession, the DGP said. Those arrested have been identified as Jagroop Singh of Dhun in Tarn Taran, Navdeep Singh of Patti Lahian Di in Tarn Taran, Arshdeep Singh of Shaliwal in Amritsar, Gurlal Singh of Rajoke in Tarn Taran and Joban Singh of Patti Mana Ki in Tarn Taran. According to information, the arrested accused Jagroop and Navdeep have criminal backgrounds with several cases pertaining to the Arms Act and the NDPS Act registered against them. The recovered weapons include four 9MM Glock pistols and two .30-bore pistols, along with magazines and live cartridges. Yadav said that preliminary investigations have revealed that the arrested accused persons were acting upon the directions of a Pakistan-based smuggler identified as Rana, who has been sending consignments of illegal weapons from across the border, he said. On Thursday late evening, three unidentified bike-borne assailants opened fire on Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Thathian Mahantan falling under the jurisdiction of Sarhali police station of Tarn Taran. The victim sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a hospital. 'One ASI and one constable, who were deployed as security personnel with the family, due to a security threat from the Landa Harike and Satta Naushera gang, along with family members of the victim, chased the assailants. All three assailants were injured in the subsequent shootout near Mohanpur village. One of the assailants succumbed to injuries at the hospital today,' said Deepak Pareek, senior superintendent of police (SSP). Three pistols were recovered from the spot of the encounter.
