Kimi Antonelli reveals ‘really nice' words of wisdom from Lewis Hamilton
Antonelli, the 18-year-old Italian who replaced Hamilton at Mercedes this season, has endured a difficult run of F1 races since finishing on the podium in Canada last month, retiring from two grands prix and finishing 16th at Spa on Sunday.
Prior to Sunday's race, Hamilton was spotted leaving the Mercedes motorhome as he paid Antonelli, 22 years his junior, a supportive visit.
Antonelli was emotional in the media pen after being knocked out in Q1 of qualifying on Saturday and, a day later, the Italian revealed what Hamilton said to him amid a tricky period.
'He came to say hi to the team and definitely we had a couple of words,' Antonelli said. 'He was telling me to keep my head up and that it's normal to have bad weekends.
'And to just keep believing. It was really nice.'
Hamilton, who was arguably the last driver to make his F1 debut with a top team with McLaren in 2007, threw his support behind the teenager.
'I can't imagine what it's like at 18, or try to imagine what it's like at 18, to do what he's doing,' Ferrari driver Hamilton told Sky Sports F1.
'He's been doing fantastic. But to be thrown in at the deep end at 18… he hadn't even had his driving licence when he first started racing.
'I think it's a lot on someone's shoulders. He's doing a great job and he's got a great group of people around him. So, I think you've just got to take it in your stride, which I think he is.
'And he's got Bono [Peter Bonnington, who used to work with Hamilton] by his side. He doesn't have anyone better.'
Hamilton joked in Thursday's press conference that he could help Antonelli 'work' Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, as the Italian eyes a new contract with the Silver Arrows.
Wolff, with Max Verstappen set to stay at Red Bull for 2026, admitted it is now his 'priority' to keep his current driver line-up of Antonelli and George Russell for next year.
Antonelli is seventh in the world championship after 13 races, 94 points behind teammate Russell.

However, he is also retained by Wathnan, who own the favourite and so he couldn't have chosen to stick with his Newmarket mount. Marhaba Ghaiyyath bypassed Royal Ascot and instead picked up a smaller race at Redcar but he should not be underestimated after that more recent effort on the July Course. He still looks pretty well treated off an official mark of 95 and he is going on for twice the price of the favourite. He looks well worth an each-way interest with solid odds on betting sites. Markel Richmond Stakes tips – 13.55 Goodwood We sided with Havana Hurricane last time out at Newbury and, agonisingly, he was 'done' on the line. Eve Johnson Houghton's colt is feared here but you couldn't help being very impressed with the effort of Coppull in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. Admittedly, he was more than three lengths adrift of the winner Gstaad that day but the winner looks something special and that still counts as very smart form. That was just a second start for Clive Cox's Bated Breath colt. He is open to plenty of improvement and should prove tough to beat. HKJC World Pool Gordon Stakes tips – 14.30 Goodwood He's not going to be much of a price on horse racing betting sites, but Merchant arrives seeking a hat-trick and is selected to complete that feat, after at decisive win at York and then an improved, career best effort to win the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot last time. Both those races were over 1m4f and on a sound surface and he looks likely to get the same conditions again. Cases can certainly be made for Rahiebb and Wimbledon Hawkeye but the big danger on the day could turn out to be Galveston, whose trainer Aidan O'Brien has won this race three times in the past decade. Qatar Nassau Stakes tips – 15.05 Goodwood Just five runners have been declared for the focal point on day three, the Group 1 Nassau Stakes but it could still provide us with one of the best races of the week between the four-year-old See The Fire and the three-year-old Whirl, a year her junior. The Aidan O'Brien-trained Whirl is well treated with her age allowance, based on official ratings compared to if this were a handicap. While that doesn't always go to form, it would be some performance for See The Fire to topple Whirl in this. The latter proved herself in Group 1 company when runner-up in the Oaks at Epsom last month. She then bettered that when returning to Ireland to take the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh, when dropped back to 1m2f. That's the trip for this contest and it suits both the selection and her chief rival, who thrashed her field in a York Group 2 in May, before being a good third behind Ombudsman in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot. Arguably, she has the best single piece of form to go into this race with but Whirl looks to have 7lb in hand and is taken to score. This looks absolutely wide open with the Glorious Goodwood odds market opening at 7/1 the field and one of the many towards the head of it looks likely to go well. That runner is Nad Alshiba Green, who has not been out of the first three in four starts this season and is admirably consistent. Mick Appleby's filly won the third of those four starts, a 5f sprint at Notttingham with a bit in hand. Up 6lb for that, she showed improvement when she stepped up in grade at Sandown last time, producing a career best to finish a close second. That upward curve is a positive for her to bring to this contest and, although it looks ultra competitive, she looks an each-way player with 16 runners declared and therefore four places to play for. Phase Eight Nursery Handicap tips – 16.20 Goodwood Another hugely competitive contest where cases can be made for plenty of them and the one that interests us most is Hey Tru Blue. George Boughey's colt began his career with a promising second in a Leicester maiden (6f, good), which connections felt was good enough to earn him a tilt at the Royal Ascot's Group 2 Norfolk Stakes. An SP of 33/1 was probably a fair reflection of his chance there and he beat just two home when rushed off his hooves over 5f. Back in maiden company and over 6f at Doncaster, he won a maiden with a fair bit in hand last time and his pedigree suggests that there will be more to come now stepped up further in trip, to 7f. He looks a nice each-way play to small stakes. Tatler British EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes tips – 16.55 Goodwood Shocks are rare in this contest, with just one double-figure priced winner in the past decade, while seven of the last 10 favourites have obliged and there could be another this time too, in the shape of Aylin. Karl Burke's filly showed clear promise despite being beaten at odds-on on debut, when she just got collared late on and lost no caste in being beaten a short head. She's entitled to come on a fair bit for that effort and she is taken to see it through to the line this time. World Pool Bet With The Tote Handicap tips – 17.30 Goodwood Another race where many have chances, not least the favourite on betting apps, Organ, who arrives seeking a four-timer after back-to-back Haydock wins followed by a C&D success last time. Martyn Meade's gelding may still be ahead of the handicapper and it would be no surprise if he added another win. However, there was plenty to like about the recent Ascot run by Sea Force, who was a close third on his first start since being gelded. That was a step up on his Nottingham maiden win that had preceded it. He still looks potentially well treated from the same mark. William Haggas has his string in fine fettle and the addition of cheekpieces he might just keep him upwardly mobile. He looks capable of going close. League 2 betting tips: League Two returns this weekend with fans so full of hope ahead of the new season. For many, though, it will be another hard slog, while the extra promotion place at this level gives more teams hope that they will still be in the mix in May. With Bradford City and Doncaster Rovers among those who went up last season, it feels a more level playing field, while the four teams who came down, Crawley Town, Bristol Rovers, Cambridge United and Shrewsbury Town, feel more suited to this level. All four will be hoping that they can bounce straight back up, but they face some stiff competition throughout the league. League Two betting: Warne to secure another promotion MK Dons are top of the League Two betting odds to be promoted at odds of 10/3 despite finishing 19th in the league last season, just 10 points above Carlisle United, who lost their league status. It will be quite a turnaround if they are promoted just 12 months later, but in Paul Warne, they have a manager who is used to success. New boss Martin Paterson is relatively inexperienced as a manager with just one brief spell in charge of Burton, but he was assistant to Michael Duff at Huddersfield Town, Swansea City and Barnsley. There is a new look at Meadow Lane with a technical committee that takes charge of everything from recruitment to team selection and tactics - three players were signed when the club was without a manager. This could either be a roaring success or dangerous territory for Paterson if he doesn't get off to a good start. A dark horse for promotion could be Colchester United, who finished 10th last season, just three points off a play-off place. With Danny Cowley in charge, you should never rule them out, after all, he took Lincoln City out of this division in 2019, and he knows what you need to succeed at this level. Max Verstappen has decided to remain with Red Bull for the 2026 season, with the Dutchman reportedly having an exit clause in his contract if he wanted to leave Helmut Marko has confirmed that Max Verstappen will remain with Red Bull next season after the Dutchman chose to stick with his long-standing team. Verstappen's choice reportedly came over the course of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, where he secured an unlikely Sprint race triumph before a fourth-placed finish behind the McLaren pair and Charles Leclerc during the main event on Sunday. According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Verstappen feels 'comfortable' with Red Bull's current setup and has been encouraged by his initial work with new team principal Laurent Mekies. The Frenchman took over after Christian Horner was axed after 20 years in charge. Even had Verstappen wished to depart Red Bull in 2025, any separation would have proved complicated. The current world champion's release clause would only have been triggered if he sat fourth or below in the drivers' championship by the summer break, but his performance at Spa-Francorchamps guarantees him third position. For the moment, however, the rumours can be put to rest. Speaking to in the Belgian GP paddock, Marko made it clear that he does not expect the team's star driver to be going anywhere before the 2026 season. "Yes, I can confirm that Max Verstappen will drive for Red Bull in 2026," he declared. This decision carries significant implications for his competitors as well, not least Mercedes who were the team most strongly linked with the Dutchman, if he decided to make a fresh start. With his main rival now out of the picture, George Russell is anticipated to pledge his long-term future to the Silver Arrows. Team boss Toto Wolff had previously left the door ajar for Verstappen, but with that option now off the table, contract discussions can move forward. A report from the Daily Mail following the Belgian GP suggests that Russell is nearing a multi-year extension worth £30million annually. This would place him amongst the highest-paid drivers on the grid, trailing only Verstappen and former team-mate Lewis Hamilton. It's difficult to dispute that the reported pay rise is anything but merited. Russell matched Hamilton stride for stride during their three years as team-mates, and has matured into the reliable team leader that Wolff had envisaged him becoming. Whether his Mercedes team-mate will achieve similar success is yet to be determined. Kimi Antonelli's debut season has been a story of two halves so far, and the Italian teenager is facing mounting pressure after six scoreless finishes in seven Grand Prix races. The 18-year-old's contract is set to expire at the end of the season and, unlike his team-mate Russell, there are currently no reports suggesting a new deal is imminent right now.
