School boy seriously injured after horror fall from third-floor balcony at hotel in Ibiza
The child has been left with severe brain trauma having suffered a skull fracture.
A child is seriously injured after falling from a balcony on the third floor of a hotel in Ibiza.
The boy, eight, tumbled from the premises in San Antonio on Tuesday evening. Local media reports that he fell after losing his balance as he fetched a towel hanging over the balcony.
It is understood he suffered a traumatic brain injury as well as a skull fracture and broken jaw. The child, from the UK, was airlifted to an intensive care unit at Majorca's S on Espases Hospital.
Police investigators confirmed overnight the incident was being treated as an accident, and hospital chiefs are expected to update the injured youngster's condition later today.
The Mirror reports that a regional government-run emergency response centre activated a poly trauma alert so the first hospital he was taken to could prepare for his arrival. Civil Guard chiefs issued a green alert so officers could clear traffic for the ambulance and make sure the youngster got to the medical centre as soon as possible.
Clínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the private hospital where he had an emergency op on Tuesday night, confirmed his catalogue of injuries after his admission. Medics diagnosed severe brain trauma, saying he had a skull fracture, subdural haematoma and a cerebral oedema.
They also listed injuries including a fractured jaw and chest trauma. The transfer to Majorca reportedly occurred because no paediatric intensive care unit beds were available in Ibiza.
It comes after a 24-year-old British holidaymaker was critically injured after plunging from his hotel in Puerto Banus near Marbella on the Costa del Sol on Sunday morning.
He was staying in a first-floor room with friends who are said to have been sleeping when he fell. The injured tourist is thought to have been drinking heavily before he plunged to the street below the Hard Rock Hotel.
He was raced to the Regional University Hospital of Malaga with chest, stomach and pelvic injuries and is understood to have suffered several broken bones. On Saturday, two Irish holidaymakers were hurt after crashing off their buggy at a golf course near Marbella.
One of the men had to be airlifted to hospital after smashing through a protective barrier around a green near the 18th tee at Santa Clara Golf and falling around 23 feet.

The boy was taken to a local clinic but thankfully did not sustain any serious injuries. Police later questioned the hotel's lifeguards, and one admitted that he had already reported issues with the suction system to the resort's management team, reports Euro Weekly. A makeshift solution to the issue had seen them reinsert a screw to cover the hole, though this frequently came loose. An investigation into potential negligence by hotel management is now underway, local reports said. Majorca flight chaos It comes after hundreds of British holidaymakers were left stranded abroad after they were hit by a series of flight cancellations due to severe weather. Some of those affected were families set to fly back to the UK from Majorca this week after jetting off to Spain for the half-term holidays - but have been hampered by delays caused by air traffic control restrictions. Airlines have said the issue is out of their control, and are reportedly unable to fully compensate holidaymakers. An easyJet spokesperson said: 'Unfortunately, due to the impact of widespread thunderstorms across Northern Europe yesterday, some flights were unable to operate as planned. 'We did all we could to minimise the impact of the weather disruption on our customers, providing options to rebook or a refund their flights as well as providing hotel accommodation and meals for these who required them. The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet's highest priority and while this was outside of our control, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused.'

Susan would plump for a Bacardi and Coke, but her only option was to pay €9 for a knock-off brand. She said: "By the time we paid £750 for the holiday, €70 tourist tax for me and my daughter and an extra £450 for both of our meals, I could have been to the Caribbean on that." Advertisement It was thumbs down for the hotel's facilities as well. Susan said there was no entertainment as the site, which is "stuck in the middle of nowhere", and the 150-yard trek down to the private beach was too steep to navigate. The family has travelled with TUI plently of times, usually to Spain, and they had always been reassured by the firm's experience in curating trips. But after the Corfu cock-up, Susan doesn't think she can stick with the company. Advertisement They offered her £100 in holiday vouchers - but Susan claims some people were offered more after complaining and declined the olive branch. A TUI UK & I Spokesperson said: "Our priority is to ensure customers have the best possible holiday experience, so we are sorry to hear that Mrs Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday. We have been in touch directly with Mrs Edwards to come to a resolution."
