British Open Round 1 leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler makes late run; Rory McIlroy right with him

Yahoo17-07-2025
The final major of the golf season is underway. Is it too soon? That's the question Jay Busbee asked earlier this week, but regardless, it's here in the form of the 153rd British Open.
This year's host is Royal Portrush, the only course in all of Ireland to ever host The Open. That instantly made Rory McIlroy the overwhelming favorite for fans outside the ropes. The last time Portrush hosted the event, in 2019, McIlroy famously hit his drive on the very first hole out of bounds, leading to a quadruple bogey eight and, eventually, an early exit from the tournament before the weekend began.
Fellow countryman Shane Lowry went on to win the tournament, so Ireland did get to celebrate.
Now McIlroy is back, as the second favorite behind only world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. And he bogeyed the first hole this time around, so he's already off to a better start.
Scheffler started in the early wave and, despite a few early hiccups, has put himself smack in contention thanks to two birdies in his final three holes. A 3-under 68 put him just one shot back of the leaders when he hit the clubhouse. But, as the afternoon wave got going, the group at the top ballooned to six.
We've made our picks to win, which you can find here. You can watch the tournament on USA Network, where coverage goes from 4 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET.

Wyndham Championship 2025: Full field as players vie for FedExCup playoffs

Golf Today discusses Scottie Scheffler's impact on the sport and where his legacy stands, while comparing his demeanor to other elite athletes. The PGA Tour regular season concludes next week with the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. The top 70 in FedExCup points following the Wyndham will qualify for the first of three playoff events, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. To no surprise, the field is loaded with those both inside and outside the cut line as well as those trying to improve their chances of making the second playoff event, the BMW Championship, which features the top 50 after St. Jude. That latter list includes current No. 50 Jordan Spieth (FedExCup points list). Here's a look at the full field: Since the inception of the FedExCup in 2007, the Wyndham Championship has played host to the FedExCup Regular Season finale (since 2008 at Sedgefield Country Club). Players are seeking to secure their place inside the top 70 and a spot in the following week's FedEx St. Jude…

Littler 'finds rhythm' to set up Rock semi-final

World champion Luke Littler survived a fightback from Andrew Gilding to set up a World Matchplay semi-final against Josh Rock. Littler was on course for a regulation win after opening up a sizeable lead in the quarter-final at Blackpool's Winter Gardens, first at 12-8 and again at 14-9. But Gilding responded by winning three consecutive legs and pegged him back to 15-14, but the 18-year-old held his nerve for a 16-14 success. He will face Rock for a place in the final after the Northern Irishman beat 2023 runner-up Gerwyn Price 16-11. Littler averaged 103.91 to Gilding's 98.45 and threw 18 maximums en route to his first semi-final at the triple crown event. "[The crowd] got their money's worth. I think they wanted 15-all but that last leg, I just had to stay focused," he told Sky Sports. "I didn't really panic. Leg by leg, Andrew started to win a few on the trot, but on the last leg, against the darts, I just had to get over the line. "He played his part, it's very tough. Andrew never goes out of rhythm, he's the same throw by throw. I just had to find a rhythm to match him." Littler teased there would be "fireworks" in the fourth quarter-final and Rock delivered. Both the 24-year-old (104.02) and Price (100.21) averaged above 100, but it was Rock who seized the moment, winning three consecutive legs to open up an 11-8 lead and then extending his advantage to 13-9. Price rallied to make it 13-11, but Rock - who beat three-time champion Michael van Gerwen in round two - closed out the match in style, winning the last three legs and producing a checkout of 164 in the final one. "I'm on cloud nine at the minute. What a game," Rock told on Sky Sports. "I was just like, 'Josh, you're doing nothing wrong, you're playing your own game, happy days'. The form Gerwyn's in, you know what to expect. "Littler's one of my closest friends behind the scenes. I hope we both turn up. Hopefully it will be a cracking game." The semi-finals will take place on Saturday evening with England's James Wade facing Jonny Clayton of Wales, before Littler's meeting with Rock.

Harrington rides his luck with Aussies in hot pursuit

Padraig Harrington is the player to catch at the Senior British Open with a posse of Australians chasing and in contention midway through the tournament at Sunningdale. The Irishman shot a five-under-par 65 to be eight-under for a one-stroke lead over a hard-charging Thomas Bjorn and defending champion KJ Choi. Short game skills on display in Sunningdale 🫢@KJChoi_Golf and @Padraig_H both found the green after starting in the trees at No. 17 at the ISPS Handa Senior Open. 📺 Watch live now on Golf Channel. — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) July 25, 2025 The Dane shot a sterling seven-under 63 to catapult into contention, while Choi posted a 67. Australian Cameron Percy fired a five-under (65) to be on the next line with Justin Leonard (65), South African Ernie Els (67) and Ricardo Gonzalez of Argentina (67) at six under par. Percy eagled the par-five first on Friday before bookending a birdie at the third with bogeys on holes two and four. But he finished well with four more birdies to remain firmly in the mix. Steve Allan (67) is the next highest-placed Australian at five under, one ahead of compatriot Mark Hensby, who followed his 64 with a 72 to fall down the leaderboard at four under. Compatriot Greg Chalmers (66) is with Hensby with another six others in tied 10th at four under. Victorian Richard Green (69) and Queenslander Michael Wright (65) are a shot further back, tied 18th and five behind the lead. After his opening 63 for the overnight lead, New Zealander Steven Alker made a 73 to drop back to four under. Harrington had five birdies, including at the first and last holes, while keeping his scorecard clean of bogeys. Harrington is trying to become the fifth player to win the British Open and the Senior British Open. "I rode my luck a lot today," Harrington said. "Got my head in the game. Did a lot of good stuff mentally. Short game was sharp." "Hit some recovery shots and managed my game, but I never showed much confidence out there at all in my swing. I obviously like these 72-hole ones, and the bigger golf courses suit me." The Senior British Open is the fifth major on the PGA Tour Champions. The regular tournaments are 54 holes. Harrington won the US Senior Open at The Broadmoor in Colorado. The Irishman has already collected two other senior major titles - the 2022 and 2025 US Senior Opens. Bjorn admitted he was "very angry" with himself over a ho-hum first round, which ended with a double bogey. Choi could have been higher up the leaderboard if not for consecutive bogeys at Nos. 16-17 taking him down a few pegs. with AP
