Mulbarton child's rape, murder case postponed as accused seeks treatment
Comaro Chronicle reports that Amber Lee Hughes, accused of rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in Mulbarton, Gauteng, appeared briefly in the Johannesburg High Court yesterday.
The matter was postponed yet again, this time due to a severe dental condition that prevented proceedings from continuing last Thursday.
According to her legal representative, advocate Michelle Ives, the accused experienced intense dental pain and was taken to Johannesburg General Hospital. However, she did not receive medical attention, as no doctor was available at the time.
Judge Richard Mkhabela, presiding over the matter, expressed concern over the delay: 'This is regrettable, in the interest of justice, this matter must proceed without further hindrance,' he said.
The judge then issued an order instructing the head of the prison to ensure the accused is taken to a hospital and receives necessary treatment before April 29. Should the accused not be treated by then, the head of the facility is required to provide valid reasons to the court on May 8, the new date set for proceedings to resume.
Advocate Ives also confirmed her intention to call two witnesses to testify on behalf of the accused.
State advocate Rolene Barnard maintained the prosecution is ready to proceed and said delays have not been caused by the state.
The 25-year-old former preschool teacher has pleaded not guilty to the rape and murder of four-year-old Nada-Jane Challita, the daughter of her romantic partner.
According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, Hughes had allegedly developed a romantic relationship with the child's father and moved into his home. The relationship was reportedly troubled and marked by frequent altercations.
During one such dispute, Hughes allegedly threatened to harm the child. It is claimed that when the father left the child in Hughes's care, she allegedly raped the little girl by inserting an unknown object into her private parts.
The court also heard that Hughes allegedly drowned the child in a bathtub. The child's lifeless body was later found floating in the bath.

JOHANNESBURG - A Gauteng cop from Tarlton Police Station and his wife have appeared in court for the extortion and kidnapping of a Swiss national diamond dealer. Sergeant John Motladile and his wife, Yvonne, briefly appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates court on Wednesday afternoon. They face charges of kidnapping and extortion relating to a 23-year-old Swiss national who arrived in Joburg last week, to purchase diamonds after seeing an advert on Facebook for the gems. The victim was held against his will at a home in Randfontein last week, where he met with a prospective seller of two uncut diamonds. Motladile interrupted the sale, threatening to arrest the victim should he not pay them more than R200,000. The victim was forced into a marked police van, driven to a popular fast-food outlet and ordered to buy the Motladile and his wife food and drinks. He allegedly paid the Motladile and his wife close to R50,000, but this wasn't enough. Interpol raised the flag after the victim's family contacted authorities for assistance. The victim was released shortly after crime intelligence members made contact with him, scaring Motladile and his wife. The pair were positively identified by the victim on Tuesday and arrested. They will remain in custody before applying for bail next week.

Alleged killers of Mpumalanga cop traced to Eswatini
On August 14, the Royal Eswatini Police (REP), with the assistance of Commissioner Vusie Manoma Masango, traced three suspected killers to Eswatini. Lowvelder reports that the suspects allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni on August 8, while he and fellow officers were responding to a burglary at a business centre in Schoemansdal. According to the REP, two additional suspects were later traced to the Sishweleni region. When they noticed the police, they allegedly opened fire, prompting officers to return fire and fatally shoot both suspects. In a statement, National Commissioner of Police General Fannie Masemola thanked the cross-border operation and Masango for assisting in tracing the killers to Eswatini. 'On behalf of SAPS and Mtshweni's family, we would like to thank the REP, led by Masango, as well as the Umbutfo Defence Force for assisting Mpumalanga SAPS in locating these killers. We look forward to strengthening and deepening our co-operation on law enforcement matters. 'The attacks and killing of our police officers are a serious concern, and we call on communities to help put a stop to these killings. From April 1 to date, we have already lost six police officers; we cannot afford to lose more. We need as many boots on the ground as possible to prevent and combat crime,' says Masemola. Further investigation led Eswatini police to Mantambe in Shiselweni, where a third suspect allegedly took his own life with a pistol before police could arrest him. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli extended his condolences to Mtshweni's family. 'Mtshweni's sacrifice is a stark reminder of the risks our police officers face every day. It is a profound loss, not only for his family and friends, but for the entire SAPS community and the society he diligently served. Watch: 2 women appear in court over Germiston unrest Two women, Malwande Tukula and Mandisa Mboxwana, appeared in Germiston Magistrate's Court today on charges of public violence and damaging infrastructure following protests on Tuesday. Germiston City News reports that the demonstrations resulted in a fire that severely damaged the Department of Home Affairs building and were linked to court-ordered evictions in the area.
