Mulbarton child's rape, murder case postponed as accused seeks treatment
The case involving the brutal rape and murder of a toddler has been postponed to May 8, following delays caused by the accused's health.
Comaro Chronicle reports that Amber Lee Hughes, accused of rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in Mulbarton, Gauteng, appeared briefly in the Johannesburg High Court yesterday.
The matter was postponed yet again, this time due to a severe dental condition that prevented proceedings from continuing last Thursday.
According to her legal representative, advocate Michelle Ives, the accused experienced intense dental pain and was taken to Johannesburg General Hospital. However, she did not receive medical attention, as no doctor was available at the time.
Judge Richard Mkhabela, presiding over the matter, expressed concern over the delay: 'This is regrettable, in the interest of justice, this matter must proceed without further hindrance,' he said.
The judge then issued an order instructing the head of the prison to ensure the accused is taken to a hospital and receives necessary treatment before April 29. Should the accused not be treated by then, the head of the facility is required to provide valid reasons to the court on May 8, the new date set for proceedings to resume.
Advocate Ives also confirmed her intention to call two witnesses to testify on behalf of the accused.
State advocate Rolene Barnard maintained the prosecution is ready to proceed and said delays have not been caused by the state.
The 25-year-old former preschool teacher has pleaded not guilty to the rape and murder of four-year-old Nada-Jane Challita, the daughter of her romantic partner.
According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, Hughes had allegedly developed a romantic relationship with the child's father and moved into his home. The relationship was reportedly troubled and marked by frequent altercations.
During one such dispute, Hughes allegedly threatened to harm the child. It is claimed that when the father left the child in Hughes's care, she allegedly raped the little girl by inserting an unknown object into her private parts.
The court also heard that Hughes allegedly drowned the child in a bathtub. The child's lifeless body was later found floating in the bath.

Armed robbers hit Mpumalanga church during prayer service, steal pastor's car
The police in Masoyi, Mpumalanga, are on a manhunt for five suspects involved in an armed robbery at the Moving Ministries of God Church in Numbi during an overnight prayer service. According to Mpumalanga News, the robbery occurred at about 00:45 yesterday. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane says the suspects are unknown and wore balaclavas during the robbery. Mozambican man killed, another injured in Kruger National Park shoot-out
A Mozambican man died while another was arrested after being caught trespassing in the Satara area of the Kruger National Park yesterday. According to Lowvelder, Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane says a third accomplice managed to escape when the men were intercepted by rangers at about 00:45. They were instructed to stop and instead opened fire at the rangers. 'The rangers returned fire. As a result, two of the suspects sustained serious injuries while the third fled the scene. One died at the scene and another was transported to a nearby hospital where he remains under police guard,' Ndubane adds. She says the suspects had backpacks and these items were seized: A hunting rifle Five rounds of live ammunition An axe A knife Two cellphones Ndubane adds a case has been opened and charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, trespassing and attempted murder have been laid against the suspect. She says the arrested suspect is expected to appear in court as soon as he has been discharged. Police have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges being added. SAPS to launch online recruitment system for 5 500 new trainees
The South African Police Service (SAPS) will launch a new online electronic recruitment system as it seeks 5 500 police trainees to join its ranks. The recruitment of the trainees whose training will commence between January and February 2026 will be advertised before the end of June. Notably, for the first time in the history of the SAPS, they are introducing the online electronic recruitment system which will allow aspiring applicants to apply online to join the ranks. National police commissioner general Fannie Masemola said that they have increased the age limit to join their ranks to 35 years of age in line with the National Youth Policy. Masemola said they are moving away from the manual way of doing things and embracing the use of technology to tighten the control measures and enhance accountability. 'The introduction of this online electronic recruitment system aims to avoid allegations that manual applications are being lost and misplaced in the recruitment process,' he said. Currently, there are 5500 police trainees at various SAPS academies nationwide who will graduate in August while the rest will graduate in December this year. All 5 500 will be deployed to various police stations and units to bolster the crime fighting efforts, Masemola added. CAPACITATION AND FILLING OF VACANT POSTS We have been hard at work in ensuring that we increase our footprint and bring services closers to the communities that we serve. In the last five years, we have managed to build 31 police stations across the country. These include, Bolobedu police station in Limpopo, Qhasa police station in the Eastern Cape and the Tafelsig police station in the Western Cape, just to mention but a few. In terms of capacitation, Masemola said through project 10 000 they have been able to increase our numbers on the ground. 'In the past three years, we have added 30 393 more boots on the ground. These newly trained police officers have been deployed to various police stations and units including our detectives to put perpetrators behind bars and to enhance our detective performance; our public order police (POP) unit to enhance our crowd management capacity and capabilities; and our Forensic Science Laboratories to increase the processing of forensic evidence that will ultimately assist to convict perpetrators of crime.'
