Meteorologists from WBAY and WFRV depart for other markets; Cami Rapson's new co-anchor announced

Yahoo3 days ago

A flurry of activity at Green Bay TV stations at the end of May includes the departure of two meteorologists.
Keith Gibson, who joined WBAY-TV in 2021, gave his last forecast on May 28 after announcing earlier in the month he had accepted the position of chief meteorologist at WISH-TV in Indianapolis. His first day on the air there was May 30.
The move allows him to be closer to family in Lower Michigan, he said in his Facebook post.
WBAY chief meteorologist Steve Beylon thanked him for the knowledge and wit he brought to the station during his nearly four years.
'When we first hired him, I told everyone that we 'just got a ringer' in our lineup. Little did I realize that he would be so much more than that ...' Beylon wrote in a Facebook post of his own. 'Keith elevated our game, especially with our weather graphics. He also created a steady presence during our weekend and midday newscasts, plus our severe weather coverage.'
Gibson had been working as chief meteorologist WCBI-TV in Columbus, Mississippi, when he joined WBAY. The Michigan native had also previously worked in TV markets in North Dakota and South Dakota.
WFRV-TV also said goodbye to a member of its weather team over the weekend.
Meteorologist Alexis Staniec's last day at the station was June 1. She is joining CBS affiliate WDJT-TV in Milwaukee and will be on the air there beginning in July, according to post on her Facebook page.
Staniec, a New Jersey native, joined WFRV in June 2022, a month after graduating from Millersville University in Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology.
Following Bill Jartz's retirement on May 23 after just shy of 40 years at WBAY, Chris Roth has been promoted to the co-anchor chair next to Cami Rapson for the 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts.
Roth is a familiar face to WBAY viewers as the station's longtime sports director. He joined WBAY in that role in 1999. Since 2020, he has also been the anchor of "Action 2 News at 4:30." He'll continue to anchor that newscast in addition to his new duties.
WBAY has a history of finding longtime news anchors from within its sports department. Jartz was the sports director when he made the move to evening news in 1998. His predecessor, Chuck Ramsay, also was sports director at WBAY before becoming news anchor in 1971 for 31 years.
It was the end of an era at WLUK-TV on May 30 when news director Juli Buehler retired. She started as an executive producer at the station and was promoted to news director in 1995.
Her colleagues called her "a newsroom leader and journalistic driving force" in an on-air sendoff piece. Among those who checked in to wish her well was CNN correspondent and former WLUK reporter Bill Weir, who said she's "an institution."
It was under her leadership that WLUK launched popular morning program "Good Day Wisconsin." She was also instrumental in Fox 11 Packers Family Night and the Fox 11 Field House.
The station first announced her retirement in March.

Catholic group calls out Tim Cook, Apple TV+ for show's 'Eucharistic desecration'

A Catholic group is calling out Apple CEO Tim Cook and Apple TV+ in a letter demanding an apology and removal of a "Eucharistic desecration" scene in one of its shows. "As the nation's largest lay Catholic advocacy organization, we write to express our concern about a blasphemous anti-Catholic scene in the Apple TV+ show, Your Friends and Neighbors," CatholicVote said in a Monday letter obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital. "Episode 6 of the series depicts two characters breaking into a Catholic church," the letter, signed by Josh Mercer, vice president of CatholicVote, reads. "The male character steals Eucharistic hosts from the tabernacle, which they eat as a snack. The man flippantly remarks about how they are eating the Body of Christ. The man feeds a host to the female character and feigns blessing her. Then they begin engaging in romantic activity in the pews before the pastor walks in, and they flee the church." Virginia Bishop Says Altar Desecration Is latest In 'Increasing Global Trend Of Attacks' On Catholic Church Mercer, who is also requesting a meeting with Cook to discuss how the company can promote "true diversity and tolerance," called the scene "sacrilegious," and asked Cook if he would be tolerant of similar content mocking the Islamic or Jewish religion. CatholicVote's website called it a "shocking depiction of Eucharistic desecration." "As Catholics, we have believed for 2,000 years that the Eucharist is not simply a piece of bread," Mercer wrote. "It is the body, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ. The practice of taking communion was instituted by Christ himself at the Last Supper. Receiving the Eucharist at Mass is, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church puts it, 'the source and summit of the Christian life.'" Read On The Fox News App He also highlighted a statement on Apple's website, which appears to value supporting those from various walks of life, stating, "At Apple, we create a culture … with a North Star of dignity, respect, and opportunity for everyone. Because we're not all the same. And that remains one of our greatest strengths." Mercer also pointed to a 2015 op-ed from Cook where he opposed discrimination against those who provide marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Cook wrote that, "I have great reverence for religious freedom… Apple is open. Open to everyone, regardless of where they come from, what they look like, how they worship or who they love." Catholicvote Calls Out Harris For Photo With Controversial Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence Drag Nuns CatholicVote has also launched a petition with 169,596 signatures and counting asking signers to tell Apple leadership that they "won't stand for blasphemy." "Apple's shameless depiction of blatant sacrilege inside a Catholic Church is a direct attack on what Catholics hold most dear," Mercer told Fox News Digital in a statement. "We solemnly believe that the Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ; this fundamental truth is the source and summit of our Catholic Faith," he added. "We cannot stand by while Christ and His Church are casually mocked in the name of 'entertainment.' We call on Catholics to join us in demanding that Apple take down the blasphemous episode and issue an apology. We await Apple's response to our letter and hope it makes amends for its offensive actions." College Student Allegedly Created Undressed Images Of Classmates With AI, Then Sold Them

A Northern Illinois University student was arrested Tuesday after authorities said he admitted to using artificial intelligence to create deepfake child sexual abuse material of female students, most of whom he went to high school with. 'There was one from when I was 15. I'm almost 20 years old now,' one victim told Chicago station WGN-TV. The victim's adolescent photo was one of many images that 19-year-old Michael Erickson allegedly used to produce realistic-looking images with the help of AI, according to the outlet. Police say most of the victims had been Erickson's classmates and were between 13 and 17 years old at the time the photos were taken. Erickson was charged this week with 21 felony counts related to child sex abuse material, including 'production of child pornography, disseminating child pornography and possession of child pornography,'according to a press release shared with HuffPost. A lawyer listed in Erickson's records did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Erickson's arrest stemmed from a tip Batavia police received in April from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, according to a charging document obtained by HuffPost. A month later, DeKalb County Sheriff's Office deputies searched Erickson's dorm room at Northern Illinois University to find 20,000 images of suspected child sexual abuse material. A spokesperson for Northern Illinois University told ABC affiliate WLS-TV that 'the student no longer lives in campus housing.' Deputies noted that several photos of one victim on Erickson's devices had been uploaded to Telegram, a messaging platform, according to the document. Users in the Telegram chat paid Erickson to have that victim's clothing removed in the images. In total, Erickson 'disseminated more than 35 deep fake images' of that victim to others online, including on Snapchat, police said. That victim told police she was 17 years old at the time her photo was taken, and that she had graduated from high school with Erickson. Deputies went on to list several more victims who attended high school with Erickson, the youngest being 13 at the time her photo was taken. Erickson allegedly disseminated thousands of images of child sex abuse material —including both photos and videos — since at least the end of February to March. According to a Snapchat conversation from March 3 cited in the document, Erickson told a prospective buyer that he charged 'cheap' prices, which he listed as '10$ for 10 pics 5$ for 5 and 20$ for 20.' When asked by another user why he made so many images, Erickson responded, 'to sell them to boys.' Erickson was granted pretrial release Tuesday and ordered not to have any contact with minors or access to the internet, WGN-TV reports. He is due in court on July 17. Boxing fans head to Canastota for Hall of Fame Induction Weekend

CANASTOTA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — In the small Village of Canastota, the International Boxing Hall of Fame is a big deal. The induction weekend brings in thousands of boxing buffs every year, like Lee Groves, who's been coming every year since 1993. 'I'm going to keep going until I drop,' Groves, who's from West Virginia, said. 'There's action, there's passion, their skill. Boxing at the highest level is an art.' The center of the boxing universe welcomes people from all over the world. As for the locals who pass it every day, this weekend is always a knockout win for the economy. Erin's Angels of CNY announces Cruise for Food fundraiser 'One of the local pizzerias says he sells 40 pizzas just in the hour before the parade begins,' Mayor of the Village of Canastota Roseanne Warner said. 'So it's a big impact for the village and we're really proud to have the honor of having the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota.' The village is expecting a bigger crowd than usual for Sunday's parade because actress Sydney Sweeney is the grand marshal. 'So, Sydney Sweeney being Christy Martin, that is wow,' Hall of Fame boxer Christy Martin said. 'I mean she is so hot right now and to have her come here and be part of this weekend is over the top exciting.' Sydney Sweeney is playing Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic about Martin's life. Sunday's Parade of Champions steps off at noon. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
