Shelbourne in pole position after shocking Rijeka in Croatia

Away wins in the Europa League are a rarity for Irish teams but this comeback victory puts Shelbourne on the brink of the lucrative league phase worth €3.8m.
It's only the midway point of the tie against a classy Rijeka side but instead of having to beat either Linfield or Vikingur Gøta in a playoff for a berth in the Conference League, avoiding defeat at home next Tuesday before a sold-out Tolka Park would guarantee that spot.
Shels boss Joey O'Brien highlighted the league's poor record on foreign soil but a dramatic turnaround trumped that to gild the club's return to Europe following an 18-month drought.
Shamrock Rovers were the last team to win a Europa League fixture away from home and that two-leg victory over the Macedonian side secured their passage to the next stage of the Conference League.
It changed from the group to league phase last year and once Shels hold the visitors in the return, they'll have six more games in the Autumn to relish.
Things looked ominous for the League of Ireland champions when the Croatians struck first in a tight contest by Niko Janković converting a penalty but all that breakthrough in the 56th minute did was instigate a swift revival for the Reds.
Defender Sam Bone equalised within two minutes by nodding in a rehearsed corner and another header, this time a bullet version by Waterford native John Martin, made it 2-1 with 20 minutes left.
Bone was again in the thick of it in stoppage time but at this other end when a struck his arm.
Spanish referee Ricardo de Burgos consulted with VAR but blew for full-time instead of for a penalty, much to the relief of the Shels contingent.

Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic are both in UEFA Conference League action this evening as they continue their chase of league stage football. The Hoops are in Kosovo for their third qualifying round first leg clash with Ballkani while St Pat's are at home as they welcome Turkish side Besiktas to Tallaght Stadium. Stephen Bradley's side have the easier tie on paper as they take on the runners-up from last season's Superleague campaign. Ballkani, like Rovers, have enjoyed success on the European stage, making it to the group stages of the Conference League during the 23/24 season. They bowed out of the Conference League at this stage of the competition last season, losing to Irish League side Larne on penalties after losing their home tie 1-0 and winning 1-0 away. A 4-2 home victory over Maltese side Floriana in the last round along with a 1-1 draw in the away leg was enough for Ballkani to progress but that home win was their first in six attempts, suggesting that Rovers can get at their hosts. Ballkani's record of conceding eight goals in those eight games will give Rovers belief that they can take a lead back to Tallaght, as will the form of striker Rory Gaffney who is in a rich vein of form and comes into the game off the back of a brace against Derry City at the weekend. Gaffney now has eight goals in the last 12 games, having missed much of the early stages of the season through injury and looks ready to make his mark in Europe. Graham Burke and midfielder Jack Byrne are both in line to start, having been rested against Derry City but Rovers are waiting on the fitness of defender Dan Cleary, who went off injured against the Candystripes. Gaffney admits that he doesn't know too much about Ballkani, who are currently going through their pre-season campaign, with the Kosovan Superleague running from August to May. "It's a step into the unknown," Gaffney said. "I don't think anyone has played a team from Kosovo before. I know a couple of their players were playing for Shkupi and Celje, teams we've come up against before. I'm sure they'll be good, they always are. "You don't know what you're going to get so there's always that bit of uncertainty in the first leg. "Over there, the weather is going to be warm. Thankfully, it's a grass pitch, not an astro this time. "We'd back ourselves that if we turn up, we'll give a good account of ourselves and be there or thereabouts. If we bring them back to Tallaght, we'll be a match for anyone." While Ballkani may be unfamiliar to many football fans, St Patrick's Athletic's opponents are worryingly familiar. The Saints take on a side that are European regulars when it comes to group stage football as Turkish outfit Besiktas are a side with a genuine European pedigree and with a Champions League winner at the helm. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge of Besiktas in January, his first managerial role since parting company with Manchester United in 2021, but despite only being seven month into the job, Solskjaer is coming under pressure. A fourth-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig saw Besiktas start their European campaign in the Europa League before a surprise 6-2 defeat on aggregate to Shakhtar Donetsk saw them drop into the Conference League. The winners of this tie will face either Larne or Portuguese side Santa Clara in the play-off round, with the losers exiting Europe for the season, so anything but a victory for the Turkish side would be considered a disaster. Solskjaer has a wealth of internationals at his disposal, with household names like Tammy Abraham, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Joao Mario and Gabriel Paulista all plying their trade in Istanbul. Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss the trip to Dublin, sidelined with a ligament issue, while midfielders Mustafa Hekimoglu and Can Keles are also out. Saints also have injury worries of their own as Zach Elbouzedi picked up a shoulder injury in the last round of the Conference League which will see him miss this rest of the season, while Sean Hoare and Romal Palmer are also out of action, along with Aidan Keena. With a growing injury list, the Saints have been forced to dip into the transfer market and have signed attacker Jordon Garrick on a short-term deal The winger was most recently with Forest Green Rovers and has made over 130 appearances in English League football, from his beginnings at Swansea City to spells at Swindon Town, Plymouth Argyle and Lincoln City. Garrick (27) has penned a four-month contract and trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Tuesday. Nevertheless, Kenny believes his side can cause a major upset. "We've played against some good European teams and put in performances over the last year," he said. "So we can take confidence from those experiences and take it into the game. "You have to draw on all your experiences, they come into play. But equally, it is a different challenge. We did play Basaksehir last year so the players have experience of playing a top Turkish team and gained some experience in that regard. "It would be one of the great victories in Irish football history if we could do it. It's a big challenge, Besiktas have a tremendous tradition and are an institution in Turkey."

St Pat's can 'shock' under-pressure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Besiktas
St Patrick's Athletic have the potential to pull off a shock result against an under pressure Besiktas in the Conference League, according to RTÉ soccer analyst Alan Cawley. Stephen Kenny's side survived what would have been a dispiriting exit in the second qualifying round against Estonian outfit Nomme Kalju, Joe Redmond's injury-time goal rescuing their European campaign, with Jake Mulraney firing a somewhat fortuitous winner early in extra-time. The 3-2 aggregate victory teed up a third round clash with the illustrious Turkish club, who are currently under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the likes of Tammy Abraham and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain in their ranks. On paper, it looks a very tall order for Pat's, whose home leg again sees them decamp to Tallaght as they did for the home tie against Istanbul Basaksehir in the play-off round last season. That game finished in a very creditable goalless draw for Pat's and they were highly competitive in a 2-0 defeat in the away leg the following week. That European run ultimately proved a springboard for Pat's stunning finish to the 2024 season, which improbably gave them an outside chance of a league title with a few rounds remaining in the run-in. With Besiktas and their manager under pressure following a disappointing 2024-25 season, Cawley believes that Pat's will relish the opportunity. "I think they can (pull off a shock) to be honest with you," the former Pat's midfielder said on the RTÉ Soccer podcast. "You often find in games like this where they're obviously the underdogs going in, players raise their levels, and it will really turn them on. "Most European games do, but this will really turn them on playing against Besiktas with a couple of household names, most notably the manager but Tammy Abraham as well is in the squad. I don't think (Alex) Oxlade Chamberlain is going to feature with the injury. "Just with the name and the pedigree they have, Besiktas, it will certainly turn Pat's on. "And they're (Besiktas) under a little bit of pressure coming into the game whereas Pat's on the other hand have hopefully turned a bit of a corner. "You point back to this time last year where the European run really kick-started their season and they went on an unbelievable run towards the end. "They were under a bit of pressure themselves before these European games. They were really struggling. But all of a sudden the European games clicked them into a little bit of a gear. "Of course Stephen Kenny has an unbelievable record in Europan games as we know. He'll really fancy this as well. "Besiktas, we know the pedigree they have. But they finished fourth in Turkey last year, 33 points behind Galatasaray. They were a long way off the champions. "I do think Pat's might be able to do something and I'd love to see it." Former Republic of Ireland international Keith Treacy is more circumspect about their chances, stressing the international and European pedigree of the Turkish outfit. Besiktas, 16 times Turkish champions, last won the title in 2020-21 and reached the knockout stages of the Champions League as recently as 2017-18. However, Treacy says Pat's can take succour from their showing against a roughly comparable Istanbul Basaksehir side last season (one place behind Besiktas in 2025) and says they won't lie down in the face of the Turkish side. "I think they'll be licking their lips. I think they'll also be realistic in terms of the opposition they're coming up against. "There's a boy there, Rafa Silva, that has 25 Portuguese caps. There's Joao Mario, 56 Portuguese caps. Tammy Abraham is a really, really good player. They lost 6-2 to Shakhtar in the last round (of the Europa League) so they do concede goals. "But I think there's levels in this game and I hate usng that phrase. Besiktas are a couple of levels above St Pat's. "Is it beyoind the realms of possibility that Pat's get something out of the game? No, it's not beyond the realms of possibility. But if Besikts turn up and they put any sort of performance together and play to the levels they can do, then it's going to be a very long night for St Pat's. "One caveat I would be saying in the Pat's dressing room is they played Istanbul last year... that's their reference point from last season and they were well in that game. So why not go and have a cut off them? "They had a player called Gedson Fernandes that they sold to Sprtak Moscow for €20m. There's not an awful lot of League of Ireland players that go for €20m, so there's big levels in it, but I don't think you should be sitting there afraid of it. "I don't expect Pat's to go through but I also don't expect Pat's to lie down."
