SEC's longest-tenured coach, Mark Stoops back to rebuilding at Kentucky
The Wildcats are coming off a 4-8 record that is their worst since going 2-10 in Stoops' debut season in 2013. Stoops also lost associate head coach Vince Marrow, who had been with him since he came to Kentucky, to in-state rival Louisville in June.
Stoops believes he's looked at what went wrong to fix everything.
'We didn't want to just move past it,' Stoops said. 'We had to look at everything, turn over every stone and make sure that we were doing things to the best of our ability. I feel like we've done that.'
Stoops has nine starters back. He also went into the transfer portal for 26 more along with 11 incoming freshmen.
Stoops' future
The coach should be secure at Kentucky with the extension he got in November 2022 enough to keep him around. Stoops hasn't had back-to-back losing seasons since his first three at Kentucky, and he would be due about $37.5 million within two months if officials wanted to make a coaching change.
Stoops also likes what Kentucky has done investing in football. He said it feels the Wildcats are on the same playing field as other programs with funding and support for the first time in his tenure.
Painful loss
Marrow is considered one of the top recruiters in college football. When he left Kentucky, he was Stoops' associate head coach since 2019 and also the recruiting coordinator and NFL liaison. Louisville made him executive director of player personnel and recruiting. When Louisville announced the hiring, Marrow said his ultimate goal is winning a national championship. That's a tough path for Kentucky in the 16-team SEC.
New QB
Brock Vandagriff retired from football after last season, and Cutter Boley is back after appearing in four games with one start last season.
That leaves a big starting job open. Stoops brought in Zach Calzada who led the Football Championship Series with 35 touchdown passes and 3,791 yards passing at Incarnate Word last season. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Calada is 23-9 as a starter, spending 2022 at AUburn and starting his career at Texas A&M.
Whoever wins the job will be helped by having three starters back on the offensive line, though Kentucky needs a new starting center and left tackle.
The schedule
The Wildcats open with Toledo on Aug. 30 followed by two more home games, including No. 21 Mississippi on Sept. 6. The slate gets tough with a trip to No. 13 South Carolina on Sept. 27 and No. 5 Georgia on Oct. 4. Another open date offers a break before hosting top-ranked Texas on Oct. 18 followed by No. 24 Tennessee and Florida is the final SEC home game Nov. 8. Kentucky goes to Auburn on Nov. 1 and Vanderbilt on Nov. 22 before the regular season finale Nov. 29 at Louisville.

While new stadium takes shape, Northwestern looks to re-establish winning foundation
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — The steel frame for Northwestern's new home stands out as a beacon of promise on the site of the old stadium. The sections filled in by concrete are more signs of progress. A little more than a year after the school broke ground on a new Ryan Field, the framework for something special appears to be in place. 'It truly will be the best football venue in the country,' coach David Braun said. 'It won't affect us in 2025. It's certainly affecting our recruiting in a positive manner. But so much to look forward to in 2026.' As for what Northwestern has to look forward to this year? The Wildcats come into Braun's third season looking to bounce back after going from winning eight games in 2023 to finishing 4-8 last year and near the bottom of the Big Ten with a 2-7 mark. Only Maryland and Purdue had worse records in league play. Northwestern has a new quarterback in SMU transfer Preston Stone and one more season playing in a temporary lakefront stadium before moving into what figures to be a sparkling new home. New QB Northwestern struggled at quarterback the past few seasons. The Wildcats hope Stone can change that. Things didn't go the way Stone would have liked last year, when he started the first three games before Kevin Jennings took over. The Mustangs advanced to the College Football Playoff. But in 2023, Stone started the first 12 games, throwing for 3,197 yards with 28 touchdowns and six interceptions before breaking a leg in the regular-season finale. SMU went on to win the AAC championship. Jack Lausch, who started the final 10 games for Northwestern last season, informed Braun in June that he was leaving the team to focus on baseball. Keep an eye on Left tackle Caleb Tiernan earned an 88.9 pass blocking grade from Pro Football Focus last season that ranked sixth among all tackles. He gave up just one sack over the final six games. Run it Northwestern's running backs combined for 910 yards rushing a year ago, with Cam Porter, Joseph Himon II and Caleb Komolafe accounting for 897 of them. All three are back. Porter led the team with 501 yards and Himon was second with 257, but the Wildcats will need to get more from their run game. They were 17th in the Big Ten in rushing at 98.5 yards per game. Lakefront living Northwestern will play five of its seven home games in one of college football's most unique settings, plus two more at Wrigley Field against No. 14 Michigan and Minnesota. The Wildcats were 2-3 on campus last season and lost both conference games, to Indiana and Wisconsin. But with its location along the lake and views of the Chicago skyline, the pop-up stadium was a stunner. Wisconsin's strength coach even made good on a promise and took the plunge after the Badgers' victory. The place is getting a bit of an upgrade this year, with more premium seating and improved audio and video. The schedule Though the Wildcats miss defending national champion Ohio State, the schedule is hardly a breeze. Northwestern opens against a potential playoff team when it visits Tulane on Aug. 30, and No. 7 Oregon, the defending Big Ten champion, visits on Sept. 13. The games against Michigan and Minnesota at Wrigley Field are on Nov. 15 and 22. The Wildcats also have some difficult road games, with trips to No. 2 Penn State on Oct. 11, USC on Nov. 7 and No. 12 Illinois on Nov. 29. Northwestern's home opener is against Western Illinois on Sept. 5. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and

Spurs' Carter Bryant honors family member with jersey number selection
Rookie Carter Bryant will begin his career in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs with a new jersey number after wearing No. 9 as a freshman last season at Arizona. Bryant wore it in various events before joining the Wildcats, such as the McDonald's All-American Game and the Pangos All-American Camp. He was forced to change it upon joining the Spurs, with it retired to honor Hall of Famer Tony Parker. The 14th pick also wore a few other numbers, though each one was taken on the team. He opted to go with No. 11, which is the same number his uncle wore. "I wanted nine," Bryant said. "Obviously, Tony Parker has nine retired. (De'Aaron) Fox has four. Steph Castle has five. Dylan (Harper) got two. I was a Kawhi fan, so I was trying to get the two. Vic (Wembanyama) got one, so then I went through all of the numbers I liked and which ones looked good. My uncle ended up wearing No. 11 playing pro volleyball overseas, so I went with 11." Bryant helped the Wildcats to the Sweet 16, averaging 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and one assist on 37.1% shooting from 3-point range. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high-tying 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks on Jan. 27. The 19-year-old logged six appearances with the Spurs in summer league, averaging 7.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.2 assists on 28.6% shooting from the field. He wrapped up his stay with a 16-point, five-rebound performance on July 17. Bryant has ingratiated himself well within the local community after volunteering at a couple of events this offseason. The team was excited to add him and is eager to watch him hit the court.
