Cops Crack Down on Late-Night Bars Under 'Operation Thunder'

Nagpur: Bars and cafés found flouting closure timing norms have come under the scanner of city cops, with multiple places raided on early Sunday.
Acting under 'Operation Thunder', teams from the Crime Branch, Anti-Narcotics Squad, and local police stations carried out surprise inspections across the city, targeting establishments suspected of staying open beyond the allowed hours.
The crackdown, led under the directives of commissioner of police Ravinder Singal, revealed multiple violations.
A cafe in Dharampeth's Mangalam Complex under Ambazari police station, a famous bar-cum-restaurant at Coffee House Chowk, and a lounge in the same spot under Sitabuldi police were found operating as late as 4 am, serving food and liquor well past the permissible 1:30 am deadline.
The excise department has taken action against the Ambazari cafe, whereas the other two have been booked under the Maharashtra Police Act for violations.
A senior officer told TOI that while no arrests were made, the raids also aimed to identify spots potentially engaged in the sale of fake or substandard liquor, a rising concern in late-night venues. Though no fake liquor was found, officials confirmed that such checks will continue regularly.
Commissioner Singal has made it clear that violations threatening public order will not be tolerated. He warned all hospitality operators to strictly adhere to timing regulations and added that surprise inspections will be conducted year-round as part of Operation Thunder.

78-year-old woman crushed to death by a speeding bus near Peeragarhi Metro Station
New Delhi: In a hit-and-run incident, a 78-year-old woman was crushed to death after being run over by a speeding private bus near Peeragarhi Metro Station in west Delhi's Paschim Vihar area on Sunday. According to police, a PCR call was received around 1.35 pm on July 27, reporting an accident near Orabella Banquet Hall between Metro Pillars 277 and 278, along the Nangloi-to-Peeragarhi stretch. "Acting on the information, a police team rushed to the spot and found an elderly woman lying motionless on the road. Crime and forensic teams were immediately called for inspection and documentation," said a senior police officer, adding, "Her body was in a badly crushed condition and was transported to a government hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. " During inspection of the woman's belongings, police recovered an Aadhaar card identifying her as Sayogita, wife of Bal Mukund, a resident of Haryana's Rohtak. In her purse, officers also found a small personal diary containing a handwritten mobile number. The number was dialled, and officers were able to reach out to her brother Narender (70) to inform of the incident. "Sayogita was perfectly fit and healthy. She would often visit me and my brother in Delhi, usually getting off at the Peeragarhi bus stop where buses from Rohtak arrive. Since it was Teej, and Raksha Bandhan was coming up, she decided to come for a few days and stay with us. But the only call we received from her phone was from the police, informing us of her death," her brother, Narender told TOI. Based on his account and preliminary investigation, cops have registered a case under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others.) and 106 (death due to negligence) of BNS at the Paschim Vihar West police station. The offending vehicle has been identified, and teams are working to apprehend the absconding driver. Investigation is ongoing.

‘Operation Sindoor strikes timed to avoid civilian casualties during prayers'
Nagpur: During Operation Sindoor , the strikes on the Pakistani terror establishments were deliberately timed between the last and the first namaz (prayer). This was done to ensure that no innocent civilians, who would have gathered for prayers at that time, were harmed, said Lt General (retd) Vinod Khandare, former principal advisor to the ministry of defence. Khandare was in the advisor's post when India struck targets in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. Talking to TOI on the sidelines of his lecture organised by Jan Manch, he explained that the last namaz of the day takes place in the night and the first happens early in the morning. The idea was to strike only the terrorists and not the civilians, who may have gathered after the prayer calls. Khandare said that as India hit nine terror establishments, it made the terrorists realise that they were not safe at their hideouts in Paksitan. They may have secured themselves from attacks on the ground, but India struck from the air, he said. The debris will remind even the locals or other visitors that India struck deep in their base, said Khandare. Replying to a question on concerns over cases against security forces personnel, Khandare said there was a time when the entire bar council of Jammu and Kashmir was radicalised. They would take up cases against security forces without any charges. This was from 2007 till as late as around 2016. The situation has changed now, he said.

Son, two others dupe illiterate woman of Rs17 lakh
Nagpur: An illiterate woman from Ganesh Nagar in Dabha was duped of Rs17 lakh by her own son and his two accomplices under the guise of helping her secure a loan. The incident took place within the Gittikhadan police station limits and spanned from December 2023 to July 2025. The complainant, 47-year-old Pournima Gajbhiye, had been struggling to obtain a loan due to her low CIBIL score. Desperate for funds, she sought help online along with her son, where she came across the number of the first accused, Varsha Bhende, aged 45, a resident of Besa Road, Manish Nagar. When Gajbhiye contacted Bhende, she was assured of assistance in getting a loan, provided she submitted necessary documents. Behind her back, Bhende conspired with Gajbhiye's son, Sarang, 27, and another associate, Rajendra Vithoba Diyewar of Gopal Nagar, to defraud her. The trio collected house ownership documents, blank cheques, and signed papers from the unsuspecting woman. Later, they called her to the district office under the pretext of taking a photograph for the loan process. The woman was informed that the loan had been approved and that the funds had been deposited into an account in her name. However, after she withdrew only Rs1.9 lakh herself, the remaining Rs16.6 lakh was siphoned off through cheques pre-signed by her. Police officials said that the trio divided the embezzled amount among themselves, leaving the woman unaware and financially ruined. All three accused — Varsha Bhende, Sarang Gajbhiye, and Rajendra Diyewar — are currently absconding. Speaking to TOI, inspector Kailash Deshmane said that this is a new modus operandi being used by fraudsters. "These people target those with low CIBIL scores and then dupe them by pretending to arrange funds for them," he said. While this is the first such offence registered at Gititikhadan police station, Deshamne added that this MO is being widely used in recent times. A case of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and breach of trust has been registered by Gittikhadan police.
