Trainers Richard, Will Freedman saddle four runners at Rosehill
Richard and Will Freedman have set themselves some ambitious targets for the new racing season and they are looking to get off to a fast start at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
The father/son training operation has been through and continues to make changes to the business with Richard, in his words, having 'loosened the reins'.
Richard has moved to the family property at Broke, 25km south of Singleton, while Will manages the day-to-day running of the Rosehill stable which set a new benchmark in the recently concluded season.

'We trained over 50 winners in the season that is concluding,' Richard said.
'We've only got 40 boxes and I've always had the rule of thumb that if you're training a winner per box, you're going all right.
'We've outperformed that and with the horses we've had in those boxes, I think it's been a terrific effort.
Will, 32, moved back to Sydney to join forces with his Group 1-winning father towards the end of the 2021/22 season and he's now moved into the driver's seat at their Rosehill base.
'Will has been the driving force of the stable throughout the season that has just ended,' Richard said. 'He's the one making the day-to-day decisions.
'He writes the work list, I used to write the work list but he does now.
'I'm the consigliere. I get consulted on decision, I get my input and doing all the work away from the stable on the farm.
'As a father I'm pretty happy with the way he's going.'

While Will manages the day-to-day operation of the Rosehill barn of Freedman Training, Richard is overseeing the development of his Hunter property which they hope will continue its transformation into a fully operational training centre in the next 12 months.
'We're at Broke, the next town to Pokolbin. We're surrounded by wineries,' Richard said.
'Right now we spell and pre-train at the farm but next year's we're looking to train a few horses off the property as well.
'As we speak, we are putting in an 1800 metre track at the farm. The grass track will be 25 metres wide.
'We're looking forward to adding the farm as a training base because we think that will help us up the results again.'
On Saturday, the Freedmans have four runners and they kick off their 2025/26 season with the back-to-back provincial winner Cold Brew in the Midway Benchmark 72 Handicap (1400m).

'Everyone knows it's not easy winning your next start after winning a maiden and he's a bit of a slow learner so in some ways there was as much merit about his second win as there was when he trounced them at Hawkesbury,' Will Freedman said.
'I don't have a concern about the likelihood of a wet track for him, I think he'll handle it and the form around him is OK.
'He deserves his chance in a Saturday race in the city.'
Next to go will be Rolling Magic, a Midway winner two starts back before being a victim of race tempo last start. The son of Per Incanto (USA) runs in the Jockeys Celebration Day Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m).
'His closing sectionals last start were very strong,' Will said. 'He ran home in 33.4 or something and he couldn't have gone any better.
'The way the race played out he was in an unwinnable position getting back from the draw.
'Drawn much better this time, I'd expect him to position much closer and he'll turn his form around in terms of his finishing position.
'The wet is a bit of an unknown but he's a fit horse that is going well.'

It's hoped that one of the stable's spring big guns will be Elettrica and the mare resumes on Saturday in the NSW Jockeys Association Benchmark 94 Handicap (1300m).
'She's going really well but she's not a first-up horse,' Will said.
'She's never won first-up so if she had to draw the outside barrier, it happened in the right run of the prep.
'She doesn't love it wet but she's going to get back and I would be very happy if I get to see her passing a few in the last 200m.'
Rounding out their quartet of runners is another horse resuming, Magnatear in the Congratulations Chris Waller Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m).
'If it was a dry track on Saturday, I'd be really confident with him,' Will said.
'I'm not saying he won't handle the wet track, I'm just unsure.
'He's a really healthy horse and I think he's going better than ever. I'm very excited about him heading into this preparation.'

Horse racing: Godolphin Australia and James Cummings part ways, launching new era with the likes of Chris Waller, Ciaron Maher, Anthony Freedman
Cummings, the grandson of Melbourne Cup legend Bart, has accepted a lucrative training position in racing mecca Hong Kong from next year. Of Godolphin's headline horses, the group 1-winning Tom Kitten has been placed with Anthony and Sam Freedman, Melbourne Cup fourth-place getter Zardozi has joined Maher, Golden Mile went to Pride, while Waller also picked up Commemorative and Beiwacht. Godolphin trainer James Cummings with retired star Anamoe. Credit: Louise Kennerley Several of the Godolphin horses have already trialled for their new stables. As part of its shift in approach, Godolphin sold 25 ready-to-race horses for almost $2.2 million on Inglis Digital a fortnight ago, including South Australian Derby place-getter Lavalier for $380,000 and group 3-winner Pisces for $330,000. While the father-son Freedman combination has prepared a number of young horses for Godolphin in the past, including 2022 Blue Diamond winner Daumier, Sam Freedman sees the racing giant's change in strategy as a winning move. 'It's an exciting change for the whole Godolphin brand, and exciting for Australian racing to see their stock spread out,' Freedman said. Sam Freedman with the 2023 Melbourne Cup winner Without A Fight. Credit: Getty Images 'I have no doubt it will be a success. There's obviously a lot to work through and there will be little hiccups on the way, I'm sure, but on the whole it feels like a really positive change. 'I think, ultimately, the one-trainer model is becoming more and more rare.' While Freedman said they did not lobby for any horses, they felt privileged to be handed ready-made group 1 star Tom Kitten. Loading 'He'd be the highest-rated horse we've got,' the 2023 Melbourne Cup-winning trainer said. 'As an established weight-for-age horse, he's right at the top. 'It's very rare that you get a horse like that in the stable that's able to compete from 1400m to 2000m at weight-for-age against the best horses in the country. It's exciting.' Freedman said the four-year-old gelding would likely resume in the group 1 1400m Memsie Stakes At Caulfield on August 30 before heading to the group 1 1600m Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington a fortnight later. 'If he's really flying along, and it looks like a realistic target, that could mean he'll line up in the Cox Plate,' Freedman said. 'But his first two runs are sort of pencilled in, and then we are just going to assess him after that.' Godolphin Australia managing director Andy Makiv and racing and bloodstock manager Jason Walsh oversaw the mass relocation of their horses. 'It certainly wasn't an easy decision, and it doesn't preclude opportunities for others (trainers) in the future,' Makiv said. Godolphin's breeding arm Darley will continue to stand stallions, including those that raced during Cumming's tenure such as Anamoe, Bivouac, Broadsiding and Cylinder. But their number of runners has fallen away significantly in recent years. After a high of 1276 starters in the 2018/19 season, those figures have dropped to 804 in 2023/24 and 680 last season. But Makiv denied this will be an ongoing trend. 'Moving away from a private training model gives us greater business agility,' he said at the end of April. 'We will continue to have the same number of horses in training — it's fundamental to what we do.' News, results and expert analysis from the weekend of sport are sent every Monday. Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. News Corp form analyst Chris Vernuccio takes a look at the Aurie's Star meeting at Flemington on Saturday. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ BEST BET DE BERGERAC (R3 No.6): De Bergerac won well at Sale first-up then placed twice behind in-form sprinter La Fracas at Sandown and Flemington, the most recent run he was nabbed late at the track and distance. There was a lot of merit in that performance after he jumped awkwardly and was left exposed at the front with 250m left. Drops back from a BM84 to a BM78. NEXT BEST ZOU SENSATION (R6 No.8): Zou Sensation is flying this prep and going for three wins in a row. The improving six-year-old won for the first time over 1400m last start, and looks well placed again in another Benchmark 100 race. VALUE BET AZTEC STATE (R5 No.1): Antez State had to concede from the wide barrier at Caulfield when second-up off a long break, and should be primed to win again third-up here stepping up to 2000m. LAY OF THE DAY FEDERER (R5 No.14): Federer hasn't won in nearly a year and looks a risk around that $2.40 price. He's stepping up to 2000m for the first time and could get cluttered up jumping from barrier two. THE JOCKEY BLAKE SHINN Metro premiership winner Blake Shinn can start the new season with a few winners at Headquarters. EXIT (R1 No.4 – $2.05), OUR COUVER (R3 No.13 – $12), FEDERER (R5 No.14 – $2.35), FORTUNATE KISS (R6 No.6 – $9.50), PUDDING (R8 No.8 – $13), STYLISH (R9 No.1 – $3.90). Shayne O'Cass's Rosehill tips: Saturday, August 2, 2025
Form expert Shayne O'Cass analyses all 10 races for Rosehill Gardenson Saturday, presenting his race-by-race tips and analysis. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 1: Captivant @ Kia Ora (Bm72) 1500m BARBRAY (2) was a $240,000 Magic Millions Yearling. He is by the now reigning Champion Sire, Zoustar, with the great Merlene as his second dam, Bold Promise his third. Back in class (and back home) after a distant sixth of 16 in the Winx Guineas. Beat Malbork Castle by seven lengths on a Heavy 9 at Goulburn. BELLA KHADIJAH (1) ran third to Switzerland on debut at $151. As for her wet form, she was an easy winner on a Heavy 8 at Hawkesbury the other day. AMUSING (5) is actually bred to love the Heavy. Bet: Barbray to win ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 2: Midway (Bm72) 1400m Hayai Lodge (aka Jim and Greg Lee) had that big winner at Randwick last week and back up this Saturday with a very promising miler/stayer in CONVERGENT (7). He could potentially go 2400m/3200m one day with his breeding. As for Saturday, 1400m will feel like a mile, but he's had two 1000m+ trials since his June 7 Midway second. BLUFF 'N' BLUSTER (15) is 18 starts 1-0-0 at Rosehill but is nine starts 1-2-1 on Heavy ground. Jockey James McDonald has a 70 per cent win strike-rate for trainer Angela Davies and they combine with DENMAN STAR (1). Bet: Convergent to win, Bluff 'N' Bluster to place ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 3: Tab Highway Hcp (C3) 1200m EVERLASTING STARS (13) is owned by R. L Charley as in the Hall of Famer, Bob Charley. The third generation descendant of the crack two-year-old late 1980s, Momentaire, was a shade unlucky in her first Highway run here on July 5 then went out west to Warren and was most emphatic winning that 1200m Benchmark 66 on the Heavy 8. Former Godolphin galloper SHIPSHAPE (9) is back for his third straight Rosehill Highway having run two absolutely giant (from the back) fifths. CAMBAR (7) is a Kosciuszko type who loves the wet. Bet: Everlasting Stars to win (best bet), Shipshape to place ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 4: Congratulations James Mcdonald (Bm78) 1400m TUILERIES (7) was bred to win a Cox Plate. Her father, So You Think, won two of them while her fourth dam is the mother of Rubiton who won the 1987 Cox Plate. Tuileries has won twice and turned in three huge runs each and every time she was beaten. This is easily doable for her; she just has to handle the heavy. SISTER DAAE (11) is third-up now, at home, off a good run followed by a very good run. Same thing with her; she's got to be able to get through this very heavy track. SUPER NORWEST (9) has raced over this same track and distance, three times for two wins (both Highways). Bet: Tuileries to win ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 5: Congratulations Braith Nock (Bm72) 1200m CONCORDIA WIND (7) was the third top priced yearling at the 2023 HTBA Sale at $100,000 when she actually has a 'million dollar pedigree'. Consider this; she is by Justify out of a Redoute's Choice daughter of Stella Cadente. She's already won $122,825 in seven starts. One win was here, one other was on a Heavy 8 at Gosford. ART'S ALIVE (4) has raced at this track and distance twice for a win and a third. She's come back really well, noting that her two thirds this preparation were both by under a neck between her and the winners. USEAPIN (2) is flying; just not sold on her on heavy ground. Bet: Concordia Wind or if scratched Art's Alive to win ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 6: National Jockeys Trust Hcp 1500m PHEARSON (5) was more or less beaten by the wide gate in the Winter Challenge. Long story short but he was trapped out on a limb and went forward early; he was so brave to hold down fourth behind The Ingham winner, Robusto. Phearson has won a Festival Stakes at this track and trip and broke his maiden by three lengths on a Heavy 9. French Derby and Golden Eagle participant WELWAL (1) has been running better races than it looks in his four starts for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr. Won the Group 3 Kevin Heffernen at Caulfield on a Heavy 8. Bet: Phearson to win ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 7: Jockeys Appreciation (Bm78) 2000m For better or for worse, I'm an AGITA (13) man and have been from his debut on the Kensington track on August 2 two years ago. This David Payne-trained son of Cox Plate winner Adelaide has won on a Heavy 8 at Warwick Farm and he'll be third-up at his rightful trip off two decent mile runs. PIGGYBACK (7) is by a 'duffer' in Trapeze Artist but maybe that double cross of Lunchtime has kicked in given her near faultless record on heavy tracks. She is a Randwick 2000m winner on a Heavy 9. PHILIPSBURG (11) loves the heavy. Bet: Agita each-way ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 8: Jockeys Celebration Day (Bm78) 1400m CAPTAIN FURAI (7) has three wins from seven career starts which is honourable enough by itself. Given what to expect on Saturday, it is worth keeping in mind that the Chris Waller-trained gelding has two wins and a second from his only three starts on Heavy. Had a couple of 'Waller trials' to get him ready for this. LIBERTY STATE (9) has a noble record of four wins and two seconds from 12 starts. One of those win was here at Rosehill over 1200m on a Heavy 8 from barrier 13 of 14 and way back on the turn. GENTLY ROLLED (8) in working up to a win but not sure about the Heavy 8, 9 or 10. Bet: Captain Furai to win ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 9: Nsw Jockeys Association (Bm94) 1300m Just for what it is worth, I am expecting bigger and better things this preparation from the former Kiwi resident GERIATRIX (7) than what we saw from him in his brief and underwhelming Christmas campaign. He had a fine record back in New Zealand when Lance O'Sullivan had him. Seems to handle the wet, But how wet? The number of ASTERO (5) tell it better than words can; 11 starts at Rosehill for 2-2-2, 13 starts at the trip for 3-1-3 and best of all; 10 starts on Heavy for 3-2-1. Happy 50th start Astero. Imagine if the 2023 Country Championship Final winner ANOTHER ONE (4) could find his old form. Bet: Geriatrix each-way or if scratched Astero each-way and Another One to place ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RACE 10: Congratulations Chris Waller (Bm78) 1100m ROSELYN'S STAR (7) is one of the horses with the most promise, upside is the word they usually use. This third generation descendant of Blue Diamond winner True Jewels went '212' at his first preparation; the seconds were to Gatsby's and Espionage and the win was a big one over Perspiration. Trials? Three of them, all wins. HANAU (5) will have his first start for Mark Miniervini here. Last start winner beating a next start winner. CATCH THE GLORY (8) and BALKANS (4) are among the many other chances. Bet: Roselyn's Star to win or if scratched Hanau to win
