Chennai, Jul 23 (PTI) PMK leader Dr Anbumani Ramadoss released the logo for his statewide tour, 'Tamil Nadu People's Rights Retrieval Journey,' on Wednesday.
Despite differences with his father and founder of PMK Dr S Ramadoss over control of the Vanniyar dominated party, Anbumani announced plans to take out the statewide tour and released the logo on the social media platform 'X'.
His one-hundred-day programme commences on July 25 at Thiruporur in neighbouring Chengalpattu district and concludes on November 1 in Dharmapuri.
He has been interacting with the party functionaries at the district level. He announced the 'Tamil Nadu People's Rights Retrieval Journey'. This journey aims to create awareness among the people to restore their rights that were allegedly taken away due to 'bad governance', Anbumani claimed.
'The DMK government is preventing the people of Tamil Nadu from enjoying 10 fundamental rights granted to all people by the Indian Constitution including Right to social justice, women's right to a life free from violence, right to agriculture and food, right to good governance and basic services, right to be free from the effects of alcohol and drugs," the former Union Minister said in the post.
'I would like to embark on a 'Tamil Nadu People's Rights Retrieval Journey' with the noble aim of restoring all the rights to the people of Tamil Nadu, and thereby ensuring good governance for them," he said.
The culmination on November 1, also marked the Tamil Nadu Day, he said sharing the logo with the catchphrase: 'Reclaim Rights… Save Generations." PTI JSP ADB

Govt to impose restrictions on Indian teams' international play under bill
The central government will have the power to "impose reasonable restrictions" on the international participation of Indian teams and individual athletes under "extraordinary circumstances", as per the National Sports Governance Bill that was tabled in Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Covered in the clause on "Power to issue directions and impose restrictions in national interest," it clarifies a grey area on participation that often crops up with regards to arch foes Pakistan. "The Central Government may, by an order, impose reasonable restrictions on the participation of any national team of a concerned sport in international sports competitions or participation of any individual in the activities of the national sports, under extraordinary circumstances and in the national interest," states the bill, which will become an act only after being passed in both houses of the Parliament followed by President's ascent. The question of allowing an Indian team to compete in an international event mostly comes up when Pakistan is involved. The government policy has been clear for several years -- no bar on participation if it's a multi-lateral event but bilaterals are "out of question." This has been the position since the 2008 Mumbai terror attack in which over 150 people were killed by Pakistan-backed terrorists. "This is an important step to ensure that the government has clear command on such decisions. Whenever national interest is involved, it's the government which faces the questions and it is only fair that it has the final say," a sports ministry source told PTI. The two neighbours' relationship nose-dived further after the Pahalgam terror attack this year in April in which 26 tourists were gunned down leading to a brief military showdown that ended on Pakistan's request for a ceasefire. The two countries have, however, engaged with each other in multilateral events even after Pahalgam as India is a member of the International Olympic Committee, whose charter bars any discrimination based on politics. India has also cleared the decks for Pakistan's entry to the country for international events like hockey's Asia Cup next month and the junior shooting World Cup later this year to remain compliant with the Olympic Charter. Compliance with the Charter is a must to land hosting rights of big events and India is gunning for the 2036 Olympic Games. Other discretionary powers Besides this, the central government will also have the final say on the relaxation of the clauses of the act, including the cap of number of Executive Committee members in national sports bodies, currently capped at 15. The sports ministry has assured that in case the international statutes differ from the provisions of the bill, the former will "take primacy". However, the final call on this will also be in the hands of the government after due consultation with the National Sports Board, which will have powers to recognise or de-recognise national federations. "...the Central Government may, after consulting the Board and the concerned International Sports Body as may be deemed necessary, issue a clarificatory notification in this regard," the bill states.

Iraqi governor resigns after deadly mall fire
Agency: PTI Baghdad, Jul 23 (AP) The governor of an Iraqi province where a fire in a shopping mall killed more than 60 people resigned Wednesday. The fire last Wednesday tore through a newly opened shopping centre in the town of Kut in Wasit province. While an investigation is ongoing, officials and residents have said that lack of safety measures in the building exacerbated the tragedy. Provincial Gov Mohammed al-Miyahi said he had resigned 'in honour of the blood of the martyrs, as they are in need of a gesture that may soothe part of their deep wounds, and in loyalty to them and to the people of this province". The provincial council elected a new governor, Hadi Majid Kazzar. The fire had sparked widespread public anger, with families of the victims demanding the governor's dismissal and that others responsible for negligence be held accountable. They asserted that the blaze was the result of a long history of administrative corruption and weak oversight. Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani had sent an official request to Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani calling for the governor's dismissal, and the Cabinet decided in a session Tuesday to refer al-Miyahi to the investigation. Al-Miyahi previously said that the building owner did not implement fire safety measures and had not applied for required permits, and that legal complaints had been filed against the owner and shopping centre owner. Poor building standards have often contributed to tragic fires in Iraq. In July 2021, a blaze at a hospital in the city of Nasiriyah that killed between 60 to 92 people was determined to have been fuelled by highly flammable, low-cost type of 'sandwich panel" cladding that is illegal in Iraq. In 2023, more than 100 people died in a fire at a wedding hall in the predominantly Christian area of Hamdaniya in Nineveh province after the ceiling panels above a pyrotechnic machine burst into flames. Columbia University Expels Students Over Pro-Palestinian Protests Amid Trump Crackdown
Last Updated: Columbia University expelled nearly 80 students for pro-Palestinian protests, aiming to restore $400 million in federal funding. Columbia University announced sweeping disciplinary actions against students involved in pro-Palestinian protests on campus, suspending or expelling nearly 80 individuals as the Ivy League school faces mounting pressure from the Donald Trump administration over its handling of campus dissent. The university said in a statement that the punishments- ranging from probation and suspensions of one to three years to full expulsions and degree revocations- stem from student participation in a demonstration inside the school's Butler Library ahead of final exams in May and an encampment staged during alumni weekend last year. The disciplinary measures were handed down by a university judicial board but Columbia did not release the names of those sanctioned as the institution noted that the actions were taken for 'violations of University policies and Rules" that disrupted academic activities. Student activist group Columbia University Apartheid Divest criticized the decision as excessive and politically motivated, saying, 'We will not be deterred. We are committed to the struggle for Palestinian liberation." Meanwhile, the university maintained that it is committed to protecting academic freedom and expression but emphasized that demonstrations must not interfere with its core mission. 'To create a thriving academic community, there must be respect for each other and the institution's fundamental work," it said. The crackdown comes as Columbia is locked in negotiations with the Donald Trump administration to restore roughly $400 million in federal funding that was pulled in March. The White House accused Columbia of failing to prevent antisemitic incidents on campus, particularly during the wave of pro-Palestinian demonstrations that surged nationwide in spring 2024. Columbia agreed to several of the administration's demands in an effort to regain funding- including overhauling its student disciplinary system and adopting a revised definition of antisemitism. In May, Columbia announced it would lay off nearly 180 staff members and cut back on research programs citing the loss of federal contracts and grants.
