KOTA KINABALU (July 14): Sabah FC are still in the team-building phase as they continue to make preparation for the upcoming Malaysian League, which is scheduled for early August kick-off.
Head coach Alto Linus made the remark after the Rhinos suffered a 8-2 pre-season defeat to Thailand's top-ranked side Buriram United FC in Pattani yesterday.
Stuart Wilkin and substitute Azhad Harraz were on the scoresheet for the Rhinos.
While the scoreline was disappointing, Alto however preferred to look at the positive side of things, saying playing against one of the most successful clubs in South East Asia was a good learning experience for the Rhinos.
'The match was very useful in assessing the team's readiness.
'We faced one of the best clubs in South East Asia and it exposed several weaknesses that need to be addressed immediately, especially in terms of defense and game transitions,' he said in a statement issued by the Club today.
Commenting further, Alto said the team which started pre-season training less than one month ago and with only one match played prior to Sunday's game, still need to work on their fitness.
'I believe we need another three to four friendly matches before we are truly ready for league,' he added.
Meanwhile, Alto praised the performance of the young players recently promoted from the under-23 squad, saying they have shown progress in terms of maturity and commitment when given the chance to play alongside senior players.
In addition, new foreign recruits Dean Pelekanos, Dane Ingham and Ajdin Mujagic also featured in the match and progressing well.
'I'm pleased with their current performances and they can only be even better.
'I hope their fitness levels and chemistry with the team will improve much before the league begins,' he added.
Alto also expected the team would be even formidable especially at the back when key players Dominic Tan and Gabriel Peres, both central defenders, returned to full fitness.
Sabah FC, who finished third in the Super League last season, will open the new campaign against Melaka FC at the Likas Stadium on August 10.

New signings failed to impress

Published on: Saturday, July 19, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 19, 2025 By: James Wong Text Size: The question on everyone's mind, especially the supporters, is how well Sabah FC will fare in the coming season. SABAH FC were thrashed 2-8 by Buriram United of Thailand in the Asian Charity Shield played in Thailand on July 13. Though it was only an international friendly, the scoreline was still deeply embarrassing. Sabah FC with some new faces in the line-up looked so amateurish in that encounter against a team who are definitely a class above us. Advertisement The Thai champions showed that they are one of the top sides in Asia with a very good display and made Sabah FC look like a school team. Among the reasons given by assistant coach Alto Linus for the heavy defeat was because Sabah FC were not match ready and lacked physical fitness as the players had just started training barely a month ago after a long break. Football's a passion Scott can't resist, thanks to his sister

Sealing the deal: Scott Woods signing his contract with Kuching City. — Kuching City PETALING JAYA: For the Philippines international and new Kuching City player Scott Woods, football is not just a career - it's a family affair. And it was his sister Lisa Marie Woods, a former player for the Norwegian national team, who first sparked his passion for the beautiful game. 'My interest in football came from watching my sister play,' said Scott. 'She played for the Norwegian national team and many top teams around the world. Watching her inspired me to follow the same path.' Lisa played for Norway 23 times, scoring six goals and lifted the Norwegian Cup with Asker FK in 2005. Now, the versatile Scott, 25, has taken the next big step in his journey by signing with Super League club Kuching City. And according to him, it did not take much convincing. 'I knew the quality of the Malaysian League from before, so this was a league I wanted to play in. When I heard Kuching City and coach Aidil Sharin wanted me, I immediately reached out to some teammates from the Philippines.' The reviews were positive. 'Julian Schwarzer, who's played here before, had a lot of positive things to say about the club and the city. ''So did Manny Ott and Jesper Nyholm, who played in this league last year.' Scott brings flexibility to the squad, as he's capable of playing in midfield or as a leftback. But more than his positional play, the Azkals prospect is determined to be a difference-maker - for the team, and within it. 'I like to see myself as a team player. I think I have a good touch and passing, and I enjoy defending. Hopefully I can contribute with assists and goals, whether I play in midfield or at leftback.' Scott, together with Kuching, are in Jakarta to play a series of friendly matches against the clubs there to prepare for the upcoming season. They will take on teams like Dewa United, Persita Tangerang, PSM Makassar and Garudayaksa. The team will be in Jakarta till July 28. The Cats want to ensure they are fully prepared before their first Super League game against Kelantan at the State Stadium in Kuching on Aug 9. 'I'm really excited to play the Indonesian teams. It will be tough, but I think we're ready to show what we can do and win those matches.'

Wenzel ready to dazzle

Looking for opportunity: Dylan Wenzel-Halls (left) attempting to get past a player during a friendly match. — Penang FC Aussie talisman backs Panthers' depth and eyes roaring campaign PETALING JAYA: Penang's revamped squad have earned the seal of approval from their Australian forward Dylan Wenzel-Halls, who believes the team now have the strength in depth to navigate a demanding domestic campaign. The 27-year-old, known for his pace, sharp movement, and attacking intelligence, was a standout performer after arriving mid-season last year. He quickly established himself as a key figure, scoring six goals and providing seven assists in 22 matches across all competitions. But Penang's 10th-place finish in the Super League revealed one painful truth – they needed more support around their talisman. And that problem has been solved ahead of the Super League in August as under coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail, the Panthers have undergone one of the most aggressive squad overhauls – bringing in 17 new signings, including exciting attacking additions such as Bosnian winger Danilo Sipovac, Ivorian striker Tchetche Kipre, and Japanese-Brazilian forward Bruno Suzuki. Crucially, they have also retained promising homegrown strikers Alif Ikmalrizal Anuar and Akid Zamri, ensuring a blend of experience and youth up front. For Wenzel-Halls, it is a step in the right direction. 'There's real depth now. That's the biggest improvement this season. We've got options, which is great,' he said. 'If we're making it tough for coach Wan to pick his starting eleven, then we're doing our job. Everyone's jostling for places, and that's what you want in a competitive team.' He knows the value of squad rotation, especially in a season that stretches across 26 league games, the FA Cup, and the Malaysia Cup. 'It's crucial for all the players to stay ready and keep fighting. Over the course of a long season, with injuries, suspensions and national team duties, everyone will get their chance.' For Wenzel-Halls, this marks his first full pre-season with Penang, and he is relishing the opportunity to blend with the new group ahead of their league opener against Terengganu at the City Stadium in Georgetown on Aug 10. 'It's like starting from scratch again. We've got players who've played at this level and know what it takes. But it takes time to gel. That's what we're working on now – on and off the pitch.' The match against Terengganu will also mark Penang's first home league opener at Stadium Bandaraya in three years, and Wenzel-Halls knows just how much that means to the supporters. 'It's important for the fans. They've been incredible, supporting us through every result. We want to make them proud,' said Wenzel-Halls. With fresh faces, team-bonding in Langkawi, renewed belief, and their attacking spearhead committed and hungry, Penang look ready to roar again in 2025.
