Kolkata airport ready to host world's largest twin-engine jet

Kolkata: The city airport is ready for the
Boeing B-777X
, the largest
twin-engine jet
in the world. An official from the Seattle-headquartered aircraft manufacturer, who flew into the airport earlier this week to carry out inspections and seek clarifications, returned satisfied.
When airlines use the aircraft sometime in the latter half of next year, they will have no problem flying into Kolkata.
The airport authorities said an engineer representing Boeing Co conducted a survey to check the readiness of the airport. The B-777X aircraft is not only the longest twin-jet aircraft in the world, but its wingspan is 71.8 m. To fit into regular airport gates, the aircraft has a wingtip folding mechanism that reduces the wingspan to 64.9 m.
Among other things, the engineer from Boeing came to check if the airport had a provision to park the aircraft in case the wingtip retractable mechanism failed to function. "The 777X, with its larger wingspan, requires airports to ensure sufficient clearance for wingtip movement. Once the wings retract, the aircraft can be serviced in the contact parking bay 61 that has an aerobridge. But in case the wingtip retraction mechanism develops a snag, we have taxiway H1 where the aircraft can be parked for passengers to alight and board," the official said.

The B-777X aircraft requires airports to meet specific infrastructure standards, particularly in terms of runway length, taxiway width, and clearances. The B-777X has a maximum design taxi weight of 352,441 kg and requires runways of at least 2,500 m for take-off. The minimum taxiway width required is 23 m.
Kolkata airport
has ticked all the boxes.
Deliveries of the latest generation B-777X will begin to Emirates, Qatar, and Etihad.
While all the airlines operate to Kolkata, sources said if an airline were to fly it into Kolkata, it would be Emirates, which has 12 flights a week.
At present, the
largest passenger aircraft
serviced by Kolkata airport is the B-777 ER, operated by Emirates. Though there is a larger passenger aircraft in the double-decker Airbus A-380, airlines do not operate it to Kolkata. However, the A-380 did land in Kolkata during a trial check. Among the other mega planes that have touched down here are the Beluga, a specially designed mega-size transport aircraft by Boeing's rival Airbus Industrie, and the military aircraft C-17 Globemaster III.
"Kolkata airport's primary runway at 3,633 m is capable of handling the largest planes in the world. The taxiways are also designed in a manner that will allow these planes with large wingspans to taxi without brushing against another aircraft. There are twin-arm aerobridges for faster boarding and alighting of passengers," explained an airport official.
The B-777X, with a capacity of 426 passengers, has a range of 13,492 km and is more fuel-efficient than previous Boeing 777 models.

Gold ETFs see inflows of Rs 292 crore in May after two straight months of outflows
Gold-based ETFs have received inflows in May of Rs 292 crore after two straight months of outflows, according to the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). In March and April, gold ETFs saw an outflow of Rs 77.21 crore and Rs 5.82 crore, respectively. 'The renewed traction in May signals a gradual return of investor interest, likely driven by resilient gold prices and sustained global uncertainties that reinforce gold's appeal as a strategic hedge. The uptick also shows that investors are regaining confidence in gold, as it continues to offer stability amid mixed signals from equity and bond markets,' said Nehal Meshram, Senior Analyst – Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India. According to Motilal Oswal Private Wealth, global gold demand hit a Q1 record in 2025, driven by strong ETF inflows and continued central bank buying despite a slowdown from last year, while jewelry demand fell sharply due to high prices. Live Events The investment demand saw a dramatic 170% year-on-year rise, driven by a strong rebound in gold ETF inflows, particularly in Europe, Asia, and India. The investment in gold ETFs led to a significant jump in gold investment demand in Q1 2025, reaching 552t, marking a 170% year-on-year increase, the report said. 'The surge was primarily driven by a sharp revival in gold ETF inflows, which recorded their strongest quarterly demand for three years, and the global gold-backed ETFs saw holdings increase by 226t during the quarter, bringing collective holdings to 3,445t. This was boosted by trade tensions and gold price momentum, with investors rushing for the safety of gold,' the Motilal Oswal Private Wealth report said. In the month of May, gold ETFs offered an average return of 1.10%, with Tata Gold ETF emerging as the topper out of 19 funds in the category. Tata Gold ETF offered a 2.53% return in May. Axis Gold ETF and SBI Gold ETF gave 1.35% and 1.34% returns respectively in the said time period. Also Read | Largecap mutual funds see over 50% decline in May inflows. Profit booking or shift in investor preference? Mirae Asset Gold ETF and Zerodha Gold ETF gave 1.15% returns each in May. UTI Gold ETF, Invesco India Gold ETF, and LIC MF Gold ETF gave 0.50%, 0.26%, and 0.15% returns, respectively, in the same period. The assets under management ( AUM ) of gold ETFs surged by 2% on a monthly basis to Rs 62,452 crore in May from Rs 61,422 crore in April. 'The resurgence in flows also highlights the growing role of Gold ETFs in strategic asset allocation, especially as investors seek to manage risk in an increasingly uncertain investment environment,' Nehal said. 'While inflows are yet to reach the levels seen earlier in the year, the trend suggests a gradual and measured return of interest in gold, underpinned by its long-term diversification benefits,' added. Gold ETFs are exchange-traded funds that track the price of physical gold. Each unit of a Gold ETF is backed by a specific quantity of gold, usually equivalent to one gram. They are listed on stock exchanges, and you need a demat and trading account to buy and sell them. ( Disclaimer : Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own.
