Kolkata airport ready to host world's largest twin-engine jet

1 2 Kolkata: The city airport is ready for the Boeing B-777X , the largest twin-engine jet in the world. An official from the Seattle-headquartered aircraft manufacturer, who flew into the airport earlier this week to carry out inspections and seek clarifications, returned satisfied. When airlines use the aircraft sometime in the latter half of next year, they will have no problem flying into Kolkata. The airport authorities said an engineer representing Boeing Co conducted a survey to check the readiness of the airport. The B-777X aircraft is not only the longest twin-jet aircraft in the world, but its wingspan is 71.8 m. To fit into regular airport gates, the aircraft has a wingtip folding mechanism that reduces the wingspan to 64.9 m. Among other things, the engineer from Boeing came to check if the airport had a provision to park the aircraft in case the wingtip retractable mechanism failed to function. "The 777X, with its larger wingspan, requires airports to ensure sufficient clearance for wingtip movement. Once the wings retract, the aircraft can be serviced in the contact parking bay 61 that has an aerobridge. But in case the wingtip retraction mechanism develops a snag, we have taxiway H1 where the aircraft can be parked for passengers to alight and board," the official said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tukarkan Bitcoin dan Ethereum - Tanpa Dompet Diperlukan! IC Markets MULAI SEKARANG Undo The B-777X aircraft requires airports to meet specific infrastructure standards, particularly in terms of runway length, taxiway width, and clearances. The B-777X has a maximum design taxi weight of 352,441 kg and requires runways of at least 2,500 m for take-off. The minimum taxiway width required is 23 m. Kolkata airport has ticked all the boxes. Deliveries of the latest generation B-777X will begin to Emirates, Qatar, and Etihad. While all the airlines operate to Kolkata, sources said if an airline were to fly it into Kolkata, it would be Emirates, which has 12 flights a week. At present, the largest passenger aircraft serviced by Kolkata airport is the B-777 ER, operated by Emirates. Though there is a larger passenger aircraft in the double-decker Airbus A-380, airlines do not operate it to Kolkata. However, the A-380 did land in Kolkata during a trial check. Among the other mega planes that have touched down here are the Beluga, a specially designed mega-size transport aircraft by Boeing's rival Airbus Industrie, and the military aircraft C-17 Globemaster III. "Kolkata airport's primary runway at 3,633 m is capable of handling the largest planes in the world. The taxiways are also designed in a manner that will allow these planes with large wingspans to taxi without brushing against another aircraft. There are twin-arm aerobridges for faster boarding and alighting of passengers," explained an airport official. The B-777X, with a capacity of 426 passengers, has a range of 13,492 km and is more fuel-efficient than previous Boeing 777 models.

Starbucks Is Beefing With Its Workers Over A New Dress Code

Starbucks is once again clashing with its workers — this time over the coffee chain's newly announced dress code. More than 2,000 baristas from over 100 stores have walked off the job since May 11 to protest the uniform requirements, according to the Starbucks Workers United union. Union members are furious that the company decided to impose a new dress code unilaterally — and frustrated that this comes as the corporate behemoth has yet to finalize a fair contract governing issues like wages and health benefits. Starbucks first unveiled the new dress code in a post on April 14, noting that the company would soon require staff to wear short or long-sleeve black shirts with khaki, black or blue bottoms to make the company's 'iconic green apron…shine.' That's a departure from past policy, which allowed employees to don a wider array of patterns and colors, and which had more flexibility on other fronts like shoes and piercings, the union says. Abiding by these requirements is costly, and the enforcement has been chaotic, some employees said. 'Starbucks is making us buy entirely new dress-code-compliant clothing,' Paige Summers, a Maryland-based shift supervisor who walked off on Monday, told HuffPost in a statement. 'Many of us can't afford a new wardrobe.' Starbucks said it would provide two company-branded shirts to each worker, though workers told USA Today that these have been slow to materialize. The walkouts, which involved baristas leaving their shifts midway through but returning the next day, are expected to continue into the weekend, Starbucks Workers United said. Starbucks, meanwhile, has dismissed the outcry as a distraction from broader negotiations the company and union are engaging in. 'While the union is focused on a simplified dress code, we're focused on providing the best job in retail with a wage and benefits package that averages more than $30 per hour for hourly partners,' Starbucks told HuffPost in a statement, adding that the protests involve a small fraction of the company's staff. 'It would be more productive if the union would put the same effort into coming back to the table to finalize a reasonable contract.' The walkouts over the new dress code add to a list of labor disputes the Seattle-headquartered chain has had with its workers. Starbucks and the union have been at an impasse after roughly a year of bargaining for a contract, with disagreements remaining on core issues, including an increase to the company's pay floor and policies for annual raises. 'Baristas are struggling to pay our bills and keep up with rising costs while [CEO Brian Niccol] made $800,000 a day in 2024. That's outrageous,' said barista Michelle Eisen when talks collapsed in April. This past December, Workers United filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board, accusing Starbucks of negotiating in bad faith. It's since expanded that complaint to include workers' concerns with the new dress code as well.

India's cafe retailing business quite bullish, outlook positive: Tata Starbucks CEO Dash

Changing climatic conditions, the volatility they bring around and lack of consistency are some of the biggest challenges that coffee producing countries, including India, are facing today, said Sushant Dash, CEO, Tata Starbucks, a 50:50 joint venture between Seattle-headquartered Starbucks and Tata Consumer Products Limited. On the other hand, the coffee consuming countries were increasingly becoming more demanding, they wanted transparency, traceability and sustainability, elements also aimed at ensuring right economic value for the commodity, he said. Commenting on growing coffee consumption in India, Mr. Dash said although India has been a tea drinking nation, now 20% to 25% of the population were drinking coffee. ''So, the headroom is huge for India and going forward coffee has a huge potential both near term and long term,'' he added. According to him, the cafe retailing market has been quite bullish in India and its growth outlook is very positive. An evolving coffee culture, with the coexistence of organised cafe chains, standalone entrepreneurial coffee ventures and tiny coffee outlets in villages, together were creating a spiralling impact and a coffee culture was getting created all across the country, he observed. 'We are clearly seeing a spiralling impact and a fast-growing coffee culture across the country, including in small towns. We, Starbucks, are looking for category expansion, a huge growth of the cafe market,'' Mr. Dash further said, indicating that taking market share was't the chain's primary focus. Buoyed by a rapidly growing cafe culture in metros and small towns across the country in the last two to three years, Starbusks has accelerated its store openings in India ``We see a lot of youngests taking to coffee, although India is a tea country. It is not just a metro feature, but the coffee culture has been spreading across the country. We have 487 cafes in 80 cities. We are very bullish on the market and we will continue to expand wherever we think the need exists,'' Mr. Dash further said. Tat Starbucks had earlier indicated that it has a target of opening 1,000 Starbucks outlets in India by FY28.

Cathie Wood Is Buying Up Amazon Stock Despite Tariff Panic. Should You?

Amazon (AMZN) shares have been in a freefall over the past two months as investors gauge the potential impact of President Donald Trump's new tariffs on its core retail business. Still, famed investor Cathie Wood continues to bet on a swift recovery in AMZN. Last week, the founder and chief executive of Ark Invest loaded up on 54,120 shares of the e-commerce giant for a total of about $9.3 million. Her purchases continue this week, with her funds snapping up shares as recently as April 7. Amazon stock is currently down nearly 30% versus its year-to-date high in early February. AI Investments Could Help Amazon Stock in 2025 On Tuesday, April 8, the Trump administration raised tariffs on Chinese imports to more than 100%, which is significant for AMZN given thousands of top sellers on its U.S. marketplace are from China. Still, Cathie Wood remains bullish on Amazon stock primarily because it's investing billions in artificial intelligence. In November, the company invested another $4.0 billion in Anthropic to strengthen its footing in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Additionally, Amazon stock is now trading at a super attractive valuation. The forward price-earnings multiple on the AI stock currently sits at about 30x versus its historical average of well over 50x. AMZN's Recent Initiatives Could Unlock Significant Upside Wood favors investing in Amazon despite its management's disappointing guidance for the current quarter in February. The Seattle-headquartered firm expects its revenue to be capped at $155.5 billion in Q1. Analysts, in comparison, had called for $158.5 billion. However, the company's latest, AI-powered 'Buy for Me' feature that lets users shop from third-party websites without having to leave the Amazon Shopping app could unlock significant upside in its share price, according to Nicholas Jones – a JMP Securities analyst. Jones currently has a $285 price target on Amazon stock that indicates potential upside of about 65% from current levels. What's the Consensus Rating on Amazon? Despite new tariffs and the related fears of an economic slowdown ahead, the rest of Wall Street remains positive on Amazon shares as well. Analysts currently rate AMZN at 'Strong Buy' with a mean target of $267 that indicates potential for about a 57% rally over the next 12 months.
