How PM Modi Celebrated International Yoga Day Since Coming To Power In 2014

NDTV5 hours ago

Narendra Modi, who took office as Prime Minister of India in 2014 and began his third term in June 2024, has been a driving force behind the global observance of the International Day of Yoga. It was his proposal at the UN General Assembly in 2014 that led to the declaration of June 21 as Yoga Day. Since 2015, PM Modi has led annual celebrations across various cities, each themed around global well-being.
This year marks the 11th International Day of Yoga. PM Modi is leading the event from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, at a massive gathering along a 26-kilometre stretch from Ramakrishna Beach to Bhogapuram.
Here's a look at how PM Modi has marked Yoga Day over the years:
2015: Kartavya Path, New Delhi
This event was held at Kartavya Path (then Rajpath) with the theme 'Yoga for Harmony and Peace.' Over 35,000 participants, including PM Modi and dignitaries from 84 nations, performed 21 yoga asanas. The event broke two Guinness World Records — for the largest yoga class and for the most nationalities participating.
2016: Capitol Complex, Chandigarh
The second edition's theme was 'Yoga for the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.' Joined by over 30,000 participants, PM Modi led deep breathing and stretching exercises.
2017: Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan, Lucknow
More than 51,000 yoga enthusiasts participated in the event led by PM Modi under the theme 'Yoga for Health.' Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also took part in the event.
2018: Forest Research Institute, Dehradun
Themed 'Yoga for Peace,' the event drew 50,000 participants who performed asanas under PM Modi's leadership.
2019: Prabhat Tara Maidan, Ranchi
Ranchi hosted the main celebrations with the theme 'Yoga for Heart.' More than 40,000 people joined PM Modi, who stressed the significance of yoga.
2020: Virtual Celebration Amid COVID-19
With public gatherings curtailed due to the pandemic, celebrations went digital under the theme 'Yoga at Home and Yoga with Family.' In a televised address, PM Modi said that due to the pandemic, the world was feeling the need for yoga more than ever.
2021: Home Again
Under the theme 'Yoga for Wellness,' celebrations again took place within homes. PM Modi said that yoga had instilled strength and confidence across the globe in battling the pandemic.
2022: Mysuru Palace Grounds, Karnataka
With the theme 'Yoga for Humanity,' the event was attended by 15,000 people. PM Modi led the yoga session, and a unique 'Guardian Ring' initiative connected celebrations across 79 countries, Indian missions, and UN bodies.
2023: UN Headquarters, New York
The theme was 'Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' or 'One Earth, One Family, One Future.' The event set a Guinness World Record for participation by the highest number of nationalities — over 135 — in a single yoga session.
2024: Srinagar
In 2024, from the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre in Srinagar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a celebration of around 24.53 crore people. Last year's event set multiple new records, adding to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Israel-Iran war: At UN, US envoy Dorothy Shea accidentally blames Israel for 'chaos, terror'; corrects it to Iran

A senior American diplomat sparked confusion and controversy at a United Nations Security Council meeting on Friday after mistakenly blaming Israel for "chaos, terror and suffering" in the Middle East before quickly correcting herself. Dorothy Shea, the US Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to the UN, made the apparent slip-up during a speech condemning Iran's regional actions. 'Israel's government has...' "Israel's government has also spread chaos, terror and suffering throughout the region," Shea said, before pausing mid-sentence and correcting herself. "Iran's government has also spread chaos, terror and suffering throughout the region," she then clarified, continuing her remarks. The moment, which was caught on video, has since gone viral, with many on social media speculating whether the slip was a genuine mistake or a revealing moment of diplomatic confusion. Reaffirming support for Israel Despite the awkward pause, Shea reiterated Washington's firm backing for Israel. "While the United States was not involved in Israel's strikes, let there be no doubt that the United States continues to stand with Israel and supports its actions against Iran's nuclear ambitions," she said. She claimed Iran now possesses the capabilities necessary to build a nuclear weapon, describing the situation as "unacceptable." "This Council must urge them to change course," she urged. "The Iranian government must abandon its nuclear ambitions so that there is no more destruction." Ongoing Israel-Iran hostilities The speech came as tensions between Israel and Iran remain high. Since June 13, Israel has conducted targeted strikes on Iranian nuclear and military assets, prompting retaliatory missile attacks from Tehran. Shea cited a G7 leaders' statement from earlier this week, reinforcing the US stance that "Iran is the principal source of instability and terror in the Middle East."

Revival of peace reflected in tourist footfall at Manas: Assam CM

Guwahati, June 21 (UNI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the revival of peace across Assam was reflected in the rise in footfall to the Manas National Park and tiger reserve. He said this while taking part in the 11th International Day of Yoga held at the Salbari College playground in Baksa on Saturday. The event was jointly organised by the National AYUSH Mission, Assam, the Bodoland Territorial Council and the Baksa district administration. It centred on the theme 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. Speaking at the event, Sarma noted that yoga contributes to physical well-being, mental composure, and a sense of purpose, which accounts for its increasing global relevance and integration into contemporary life. He attributed the international recognition of yoga to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts, particularly his address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014, which resulted in the UN's formal declaration of June 21 as International Yoga Day on December 11, 2014. Reviewing Assam's engagement with the Yoga Day, the Chief Minister recalled that the inaugural state-level celebration was held at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati in 2015, with subsequent editions hosted in locations such as Majuli, Nalbari, Nagaon, Kamrup Metropolitan, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Dhubri, and Tezpur. He expressed confidence that this year's event, held in collaboration with the BTR and Baksa administration, would invigorate the advancement of yoga in the region. Sarma also remarked on the significance of Salbari as the venue, observing its transition from a region once affected by conflict during the Bodo movement to now emblematic of Bodoland's improved conditions and administrative stability. The event, he stated, not only celebrates yoga but also symbolises the region's resilience and renewal. Noting the rising number of visitors to Manas National Park, he affirmed that Salbari is poised for a new chapter of development. UNI ANP PRS
