'1206' Was Ex Chief Minister Vijay Rupani's 'Lucky' Number, Until It Wasn't
The number '1206' was never just a number for former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani. It was a constant across the decades of his public and private life. It featured on the number plates of his vehicles, be it a scooter in his early days, or the official car of a Chief Minister. For the long-serving BJP leader, '1206' stood for good fortune. Until it didn't.
On June 12, 2025, that number, in a cruel twist of fate, became the day of his death.

Vijay Rupani Cancelled London Ticket Twice, June 12 Was Not His 1st Choice
Former Gujarat Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani, was among the 242 people on board the doomed Air India 787-8 Dreamliner, which crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. Only one survived, and 241 people died, including the former Chief Minister. But, flying to London on June 12 to meet his wife and daughter was not Mr Rupani's first choice.
The former chief minister first booked his ticket for May 19 on flight AI171 and intended to fly back to India on June 25. With a change in plans, Mr Rupani cancelled his ticket for May 19 and decided to fly on June 5.
There was another change. The former Chief Minister cancelled his second ticket too and booked seat number 2D on flight AI 171 for June 12, which crashed in less than a minute after taking off.

Who Is Mahesh Jirawala? Filmmaker Missing After Ahmedabad Plane Crash

Last Updated: Gujarati filmmaker Mahesh Jirawala is feared dead in the Ahmedabad plane crash. Missing since June 12, his family awaits DNA confirmation. Here's what we know. In what continues to be one of the most devastating aviation disasters in recent memory, Ahmedabad-based filmmaker Mahesh Kalawadia—widely known in the Gujarati film industry as Mahesh Jirawala—is feared to be among the many lives lost in the tragic Air India plane crash that occurred on June 12. The London-bound aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, leaving behind a trail of destruction in the densely populated Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad. Mahesh, a respected director and producer known for his work in regional advertorials and music videos, has been missing since the day of the incident. According to his wife, Hetal Kalawadia, his last known location was traced to within 700 meters of the crash site. That proximity, combined with the sudden disappearance of both his mobile phone and scooter, has raised grave concerns. The crash has so far claimed 290 lives, including 271 passengers aboard the aircraft and 29 residents on the ground in Meghaninagar—many of whom were caught unawares as parts of the aircraft fell onto homes, streets, and small businesses. Rescue and recovery operations are still underway, and identification of victims remains ongoing. Mahesh's family has submitted DNA samples to assist authorities in confirming whether he is among those who perished. Mahesh Jirawala was more than a filmmaker. He was a storyteller, a cultural contributor, and a beloved figure in the Gujarati creative community. As the founder and CEO of Mahesh Jirawala Productions, he built a reputation for visually rich, emotionally resonant music videos and promotional films. His work was rooted in the local idiom, yet bore a professional polish that earned him recognition beyond state lines. Among his more notable projects was the 2019 Gujarati film Cocktail Premi Pag Of Revenge, a dramatic narrative featuring actors Asha Panchal and Vruti Thakkar. The film was lauded for its layered performances and Mahesh's direction, which was marked by sensitivity and flair. He was also an active presence on social media, where he often posted behind-the-scenes glimpses of his shoots, interactions with artists, and previews of upcoming projects. At home, Mahesh was a devoted husband and father. He lived with his wife Hetal and their two children—a daughter and a son—in Naroda, a suburb of Ahmedabad. Friends describe him as soft-spoken, grounded, and deeply committed to both his art and his family. Speaking to the Press Trust of India (PTI), Hetal recounted the last conversation she had with her husband. 'On June 12, Mahesh had gone to Law Garden to meet someone. He called me at 1:14 pm to say he was on his way back home," she said. 'I called him again at 1:40 pm, but his phone was switched off. That was just a minute after the plane took off from Ahmedabad airport." What followed was an agonizing silence. Hours turned into days. The news of the crash began to circulate widely, and Hetal's fears deepened. 'His scooter and mobile phone are still missing," she said. 'And the last location we were able to trace was not a route he would ever take to return home. None of it makes sense." The possibility that Mahesh may have been an unintentional bystander caught in the chaos of a plane crash has sent ripples through the Gujarati film fraternity. Colleagues, collaborators, and fans have taken to social media to express their disbelief and anguish, many sharing his music videos and film clips in tribute. Officials involved in the investigation have stated that the intensity of the crash has made victim identification a prolonged and painstaking process. For families like Mahesh's, each passing day without news brings both hope and dread. Until a definitive confirmation is made, they continue to wait—straining against despair, holding on to fragments of possibility. As Ahmedabad mourns its dead and the nation grapples with the aftermath, stories like Mahesh's humanize the scale of the tragedy. Behind every number in the death toll is a life—a voice silenced, a dream interrupted, a family changed forever. First Published: June 16, 2025, 14:14 IST

Ahmedabad plane crash: 99 victims identified by DNA tests, 64 bodies handed over to kin

Ahmedabad, Four days after the horrific crash of an Air India plane claimed 270 lives, 99 victims have so far been identified through DNA matching and 64 bodies, including that of former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, were handed over to their families, officials said on Monday. Rupani was among the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 that crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. His mortal remains were handed over to his wife Anjali Rupani and other family members at the city civil hospital. Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition or damaged. "Till now, 99 DNA samples have been matched, and 64 bodies have already been handed over to the respective families. These deceased were from different parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan," civil superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi told reporters. Addressing concerns of grief-stricken kin, he appealed to them not to panic over the time-consuming process of matching DNA samples with mortal remains. "We are trying our best to finish this process as soon as possible. Some are complaining that the results have not come even after 72 hours. I appeal to them not to panic, because this is a very important process with legal implications. We will call them as soon as results arrive," added Joshi. Earlier on Sunday, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital authorities stated that samples of 250 victims, including persons on board the ill-fated flight as well as those killed on the ground, had been collected for identification. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 242 persons on board crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.39 pm on June 12. While 241 persons on board the London-bound aircraft died, one passenger miraculously survived. Besides, 29 persons are reported to have died in the disaster on the ground, which includes five MBBS students.

Probe drug money trail to catch big fish: Punjab BJP chief Jakhar to CM Mann

Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Monday wrote to chief minister Bhagwant Mann, seeking a probe under the supervision of the high court chief justice into the drug money trail to track down its powerful end beneficiaries. 'It is imperative to follow the money in the drug money trail, without which the exercise to root out drugs from Punjab is not only futile but a farce as well,' Jakhar said. 'Arresting thousands of drug addicts and small players will not make much difference. The elephant in the room has to be addressed,' he said. Under the Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign launched by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab three-and-a-half months ago, more than 17,000 drug smugglers have been arrested, and large consignments of drugs have been seized. 'The flow of money has to be established to catch the big fish and arrest the end beneficiaries, be it politicians across party lines or officials. The drug cartels in Punjab cannot thrive without patronage,' Jakhar said. 'I'm writing to you with hope and caution to draw your attention towards the criticalness of an urgent probe under the direct supervision of Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice Sheel Nagu to track down the mighty and powerful end beneficiaries in the drug money trail, a primary source that has tormented Punjab,' the BJP leader said. 'This is important if your government wants to establish its credibility and resolve in its fight against drugs,' he added. Jakhar urged Mann to write to the chief justice, seeking his intervention to conduct a time-bound probe by a credible agency, or multiple agencies, under his supervision to uncover the end beneficiaries in the drug money trail. Recovery of narcotics in Punjab goes into several thousand crores of rupees, which underlines the rot that exists, Jakhar said. 'The fortunes of several Punjab politicians have turned in the past few years, which cannot be dismissed as mere coincidence. It raises a lot of stench and suspicion on the source of funding,' he said. The BJP leader claimed that MLAs who rode bicycles now own luxury cars worth crores of rupees. 'Many have farmhouses spread over several acres. Since the quantum of money involved in the drug money trail is colossally huge, it reeks of money laundering, which can be probed by the Enforcement Directorate, or as deemed fit by the chief justice, since it could involve the high and mighty,' Jakhar said. Ministers, MLAs, party presidents, party in-charges, and leaders of all hues should be part of the investigation, he added. 'As the state BJP president, I offer myself to be the first to be probed as a mark of my and my party's sincerity and earnestness,' Jakhar said. 'Not just drug money trail, the probe should also include in its scope the trail of illicit money from mining and sand mafia so that the guilty can be brought to book,' he added.
