Australia vs West Indies T20 live updates: Mitch Owen takes first wicket

News.com.au4 days ago
The West Indies have suffered a late collapse as they set Australia a total of 190 to chase in the first T20 in Kingston on Monday.
Australia's bowlers had been blasted all over Sabina Park for most of the innings, but the hosts were decimated in the final five overs to finish 8/189.
Looking to regain some respect after an embarrassing 3-0 Test series sweep, the hosts were on fire early as they reached 1/123 after 12 overs in Jamaica.
However, Australia's bowlers then fought back in taking two quick wickets to leave the West Indies with two fresh batsmen at the crease heading into the final overs.
It got very ugly from there.
11.45am - West Indies tail decimated
The West Indies have lost 6/35 in 27 balls after appearing in control of the first T20.
The hosts looked set for a monstrous total at 2/159 in the 16th over, but some Ben Dwarshuis magic turned the game on its head.
Dwarshuis finished with 4/36 from his four overs. He picked up three wickets in his final over — the penultimate over of the innings.
'How quickly emotions can change,' West Indies legend Jimmy Adams said on ESPN.
Earlier, captain Shai Hope (55 from 39 balls) and Roston Chase (60 from 32) were on fire.
Shimron Hetmyer was also cooking when he reached 38 from 19 before he was the victim of a spectacular catch by Cameron Green.
11.30am - Mitch Owen makes history on debut
Aussie debutant Mitch Owen picked up a wicket with his third ball in international T20 cricket when opener Shai Hoped miss-hit a lofty cover drive that was snapped up by Nathan Ellis at deep cover.
'It would have been an exciting day today to be presented his cap by Nathan Ellis,' Aussie great Brad Haddin said on ESPN.
'He will remember this day here for the rest of his life.'
Aussie players raced in to congratulate Owen, but their smiles didn't last long as Shimron Hetmyer continued to blast the ball over the rope.
Marsh sends West Indies in to bat
Australian captain Mitchell Marsh has won the toss and chosen to bowl first.
Marsh will open the batting alongside Victoria's Jake Fraser-McGurk, while Hobart Hurricanes hero Mitch Owen will make his international debut in the middle order, becoming Australia's 112th men's T20I cricketer.
'Like most guys coming in and out of the squad over the next (19) games, we'll see guys bat in different positions and get opportunities in certain positions,' Marsh continued.
'First and foremost, it's always we're representing Australia, we're here to win the series and culturally, that's how we want to go about it.
'There will be guys that get opportunities.
'We've obviously got a few guys missing for this series for a well-earned rest, but we want guys to be flexible, fluid, come together as a team and be really connected.'

Melbourne lose Jahrome Hughes to shoulder injury in epic 34-30 win over Sydney Roosters

Melbourne have scored an epic 34-30 win over the Roosters but paid a heavy price for their triumph with star halfback Jahrome Hughes suffering a shoulder dislocation. Hughes' left shoulder was hurt when he attempted to make a tackle on Roosters fullback James Tedesco early in the second half. He will go for scans on Friday morning. Despite losing the reigning Dally M winner and already being without Ryan Papenhuyzen and Cameron Munster, the Storm ended up on top in a high-scoring encounter thanks to a stellar performance from Harry Grant. The Queensland and Australian hooker scored a try and set up two more, including the winner by prop Stefano Utoikamanu. Retiring star Sam Docherty ‘put on a poster' in huge Calsher Dear grab

Calsher Dear clearly didn't get the memo about cherished Carlton star Sam Docherty's last game in the AFL. Docherty had tears flowing across the footy world earlier this week as the man who beat cancer twice announced Thursday night's clash with Hawthorn would be his 184th and last for the Blues. The 31-year-old was a huge part of the pre-game build-up on Fox Footy and was mentioned on the Carlton banner alongside Jacob Weitering in his 200th game. But once the game got underway, 19-year-old Dear did all he could to steal the show. The rangy 195cm youngster, pick 56 in the 2023 draft who is the son of Norm Smith medallist and premiership winner Paul Dear, was playing just his 21st game for the Hawks. Watch Calsher Dear's mark in the video player above With 30 seconds remaining in a dominant first quarter for Hawthorn, Dear put his stamp on the contest – and his legs on poor Docherty's shoulders – in a sensational grab in the goalsquare. Another veteran in Jack Gunston had a shot on goal from right on the 50m arc fall short and Dear read it best, soaring through the air to take the mark at full stretch as the commentators lost their minds. 'Gunston from on 50. Right to the top of goal, oh Calsher Dear!' Mark Howard said on Fox Footy. 'A young man with a big fly!' Jack Riewoldt added: 'Ah, that was a hanger. That was huge.' From the sideline, Brad Johnson referenced the commentary from Alex Jesaulenko's famous mark when he said: 'You beauty guys. How good was that?' Dear had a strong rookie campaign last season, making 17 appearances for the Hawks and kicking 25 goals, picking up a Rising Star nomination along the way. He was featuring in just his fourth game of 2025 against the Blues, missing the first four months of the season due to a back issue. The club has carefully managed the young forward, who had an extended stint in the VFL and is now playing his third straight AFL game as the finals loom. He took the term 'rising star' to a whole new level on Thursday night and David King was glowing about the youngster's future as the Hawks took a five-goal lead into halftime. 'He's the wildcard,' King said. 'He's the one, I mentioned in the pre-game I just think he's got a big game in him. 'Whether it's tonight or the next couple of weeks, it's been two weeks back in this line-up, he's kicked 5.2 coming into tonight and he just looks lively. 'This is a big hang. A big hang.' Riewoldt then spared a thought for Docherty, who was the unfortunate step ladder to help Dear pull off the superb mark. 'Sam Docherty, in his last game, has been put on a poster by Calsher Dear in what, game 21,' the Richmond great said. 'It's a weird and wonderful game footy.' Dear's name was quickly trending on social media, with many commenting on the mark. The official AFL account tweeted a video with the caption: 'Calsher Dear said it was time to fly.' An account called @whinacooperrr wrote: 'Just give Calsher Dear (mark of the year) now omfg.' Fox Footy said: 'Calsher Dear with a HUGE HANG ... on the retiring Sam Docherty.' 7AFL wrote in all caps: 'Calsher Dear might never come down.' Leo Barry got a reference when @dazzb65 tweeted: 'Calsher Dear. You Star.' A Hawthorn fan quipped: 'How's the weather up there Calsher Dear?? WOW.' X account Americans Watching The Footy was feeling for the retiring Carlton star, writing: ''See, that's why I'm retiring' – Sam Docherty.'
