Janet Ellis: ‘I thought my travels were over when my husband died'

Janet Ellis, 69, is a TV presenter, actress and writer best known for presenting Blue Peter and starring in Doctor Who alongside Tom Baker'. She lived in Chatham, Kent, until she was four before moving to Germany when her soldier father was posted there. She has three children: the singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, 46, from her first marriage to the director and producer Robin Bextor, and Jackson, 37, and Martha, 34, from her marriage to the TV producer John Leach, who died of cancer in 2020. Ellis lives in west London with her grandson Sonny, 21, the son of Ellis-Bextor and her musician husband, Richard Jones.
I went to some incredible places with Blue Peter in my twenties and, having spent much of my childhood in Germany, it was great to explore the British Isles. I remember filming at Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, where the last descendant of the family who had lived there for decades was moving out and the National Trust was taking over. He lived in a tiny kitchen-bedsit set-up and the rest of the house looked frozen in time: board games mid-play, stuffed animals, pressed butterflies — it was extraordinary.
My first long-haul trip was to the Sri Lankan capital Colombo in 1984. I was so excited that I didn't sleep on the flight, then I had just 90 minutes after landing before interviewing the prime minister. I fell asleep on arrival in my room and woke up feeling like my head was filled with Polyfilla.
John and I adored Japan and went there four times. Every time we'd start in Tokyo then visit different places. On our last trip there, in 2017, we walked the Kiso Valley, between Kyoto and Tokyo. It was breathtaking, but not the flat — like much of the terrain — and disused railway track I'd imagined. We stayed in a ryokan — traditional inns where dinner is served at 6pm and there's nothing to do afterwards. It's hard to eat badly in Japan, though sushi and sashimi are more of a dinner thing; lunch is mostly noodle-based. In Kyoto we stayed at the Screen, a sweet little hotel. It's a university city so everyone rides bikes and the skyline isn't as intense as that of Tokyo. We went to our first onsen — the single-sex, communal, naked bathing in hot springs — on an island off Hiroshima.
I had to return John's passport after he died and it was so hard; all those memories of the trips we'd taken together. Sophie actually came with us on our honeymoon, to Bali in 1988. We left Jack as he was coming up to a year and John's mum looked after him, but I don't think it occurred to us not to bring Sophie, so thank you, John. We had a lovely time.

John and I spent lots of time in Italy too. Sophie has a house in Puglia, where we've holidayed the last four Augusts. I fell for Sicily after Martha, my daughter, returned from a trip there as part of her history of art degree. There was a lot she hadn't seen and she wanted us to take her back, which we did twice. I particularly love the southern towns — further on from Noto and Ragusa — that survived the 1693 earthquake. They were built in baroque style, so they're very beautiful, with a gorgeous coastline and fantastic food.
After John's cancer diagnosis — but absolutely not because of it — we bought a tiny house in Modica, in southeast Sicily. After he died in 2020 the kids were really keen for me to go back there and took me. I felt the sensation that he knew I'd return without him. The house holds so many memories, which is lovely, but I'm not aiming to spend time alone there; I like having someone to play with.
My favourite pastime abroad is visiting hardware stores, supermarkets and chemists. I can easily spend days doing very little apart from going for a stroll to buy a brilliant little kitchen knife for pennies.
After John's death I believed that my long-haul travelling days were over, unless the kids invited me somewhere. It's fairly easy to find friends for a weekend trip, but it's difficult aligning diaries for longer breaks when you don't have a partner. So when I was invited to join a Just You group tour to South Africa last year I was apprehensive. It was my first solo trip, but everyone was in a similar position — widowed, divorced or single — and hearing that everyone was nervous was incredibly bonding. My instinct when I arrive anywhere is to message John and show him where I am — I don't suppose that will ever stop.

The trip was a good spread, through the country from Cape Town to Johannesburg, like a geography textbook brought to life. I was fascinated to learn about the 17th-century Dutch settlers, who brought everything they owned on their backs, seeking fertile land. We went on safari at Featherbed Nature Reserve and Kruger [National Park], spotting the big five and, even better, the little five, all hoping not to get eaten. Veteran actors Leslie Ash and Phil Daniel reunite at premiere of ballet version of 1979 Brit flick Quadrophenia

The pair, who found fame in the iconic 1979 flick about gangs of scooter-riding mods, had a ball reminiscing. 3 Phil, 66, said: 'Here's Leslie and me not quite pirouetting at the Quadrophenia Mod Ballet.' Brooklyn Beckham proves not all family ties have been severed as he wishes David's mum Sandra a happy birthday despite social media silence on his dad's 50th milestone amid feud

Brooklyn Beckham proved not all family ties have been severed as he shared a sweet birthday tribute to David's mum Sandra on Thursday. The son of David and Victoria, 26, took to his Instagram page to acknowledge the celebration despite his recent social media silence on his dad's 50th milestone last month. Sharing a throwback picture of him and Sandra, he captioned: 'Happy birthday nanny xx love you so much.' Brooklyn's comment comes amid an ongoing family feud which escalated when he and his wife Nicola Peltz, 30, snubbed David's 50th birthday celebrations last month. Sources suggested that Nicola 'very much enjoys' Brooklyn's devotion and that this has been a key factor in the feud with his family. 'He will do anything Nicola wants,' one friend said. 'And that has very much been a thing in the fallout.' Brooklyn's youngest brothers Cruz and Romeo also wished Sandra a happy birthday on their social media pages. 'Happy birthday love you lots,' wrote Romeo, 22, as he posed beaming next to her. Meanwhile Cruz, 20, shared a heart-melting shot hugging Sandra and wrote: 'Happy birthday @sandra_beckham49 I love you lots.' Earlier in the day, Brooklyn typically had eyes for his lady only as he shared a loved up snap of his wife Nicola as he penned: 'My absolute angel,' and called her 'his world'. Nicola also shared an Instagram story as she posed for a blurry selfie with her husband, penning: 'Summer love'. The gushing post comes after Brooklyn said that marrying Nicola was the 'best decision ever' after he was accused of being obsessed with her. And taking to Instagram on Monday, Brooklyn, 30, shared another gushing post about his wife as he marked five years since proposing to the billionaire heiress. Brooklyn shared a mirror selfie of Nicola posing while wearing hair curlers as he stood beside her and kissed her neck. 'It's been 5 years since I asked this beautiful woman to marry me xx best decision ever x I love you so much ❤️,' Brooklyn wrote. Nicola also took to social media to mark the occasion, sharing a sweet kissing snap. She captioned the post: '5 years ago we got engaged. i love living life with you baby - i loveee you so muchhh [sic]'. The pair first met at Coachella music festival in 2017 but it wasn't until two years later when they met again at a Halloween party hosted by Leonardo DiCaprio in Los Angeles that they fell for one another - and he proposed a year later. Recounting their love story in a gushing joint interview with the German edition of Glamour magazine earlier this month, 26-year-old Brooklyn was the picture of husbandly devotion as he looked at his wife and cooed: '[The party's] where I fell in love with you.' But, instead of returning the sentiment, the 30-year-old actress awkwardly giggled and replied through clenched teeth: 'That's true.' Brushing off the apparent snub, Brooklyn touched her on the knee and insisted: 'We've been inseparable ever since.' The young couple have rarely been seen without one another since their lavish wedding in 2022. But many are reportedly beginning to question if this is through mutual adoration or because of 'obsession' from Brooklyn – and has sparked alarm among his family. Those who know the aspiring chef and amateur photographer told the Mail he has a tendency to 'fall head over heels in love' with women very quickly. But even they were shocked at the speed that it happened with Nicola. 'Brooklyn has had other girlfriends, some very long term, but we have never seen anything like Nicola before,' a source close to him told the Mail. 'This is pure infatuation. 'They met and just a few months later he moved to the States to be with her. He wanted her to be the one. 'He is absolutely besotted. They have barely spent a night apart since they have been together. It's like he can't imagine life without her – he will literally do anything she wants him to.'

BBC Radio 2 presenter Scott Mills forced to issue apology after HUGE blunder live on air

Scott Mills was forced to issue a live apology on Thursday morning after holding a full-blown 'funeral service' for Call The Midwife on his Radio 2 show. The Radio 2 presenter, 51, devoted an entire segment of his Breakfast Show to reports claiming the BBC series would come to an end after its fifteenth season next year. Treating the news with dramatic flair, Scott played sombre funeral-style music and even opened a phone line for devastated fans to call in and share their heartbreak. However things got awkward after he was told only moments later that the beloved drama hadn't been axed after all. Opening the segment, he declared: 'This morning, we woke up to the news that the show that never ends is indeed ending. I am sorry if this is how you are finding out.' As he confirmed the series in question was Call the Midwife, he added: 'It is ending, the fifteenth series will be the last one. 'We opened our phone lines to offer you support in these times because we've all laughed and cried and gasped at some of the births. Lots of you have been messaging in and using the helpline.' Listeners flooded the show with emotional voice notes, reminiscing about the programme's most memorable moments. One even expressed hope the series might return, to which Scott firmly replied: 'No it won't.' But just ten minutes later, Scott was forced to backtrack dramatically after being handed a statement from BBC bosses live on air. Sounding sheepish, he said: 'Good Morning, I may have done a bad thing here so I'm going to read this prepared statement from the BBC which I've just received.' He then read word-for-word a response from the BBC, which said: 'The BBC would like to reassure fans that Call The Midwife will remain at the heart of the BBC for years to come. 'As previously announced, there are two Christmas specials, a new series, a film and prequel series, before a sixteenth series in due course. Call the Midwife isn't going anywhere!' Originally, The Daily Star reported the long-running show was set to wrap after its fifteenth series in 2026. A source told the publication: 'After years of drama and countless births, Call The Midwife is coming to an end. 'The team have decided it's time to draw the show to a close and bow out. 'This is the last we'll see of these much-loved characters. Storylines will tie up a lot of loose ends.' But the BBC has made it clear the drama, which regularly draws in up to 11 million viewers and has won multiple awards, has no plans to hang up its midwifery bags just yet. And there's even more to look forward to. Earlier this year, The Sun revealed a prequel series is in the works, set during World War II and expected to explore the origins of some of the show's best-loved characters. The BBC Radio 2 Breakfast show is broadcast weekly on weekdays. Since Zoe Ball's departure in December 2024, Scott took over the show from January 2025, hosting in that exact weekday morning slot.
