Wakefield Debenhams store to be converted into bowling alley
A former Debenhams store is to be converted into a new bowling alley and entertainment centre.Wakefield Council has confirmed Tenpin will be located on the upper floor of the building in Trinity Walk Shopping Centre.The new venue will include 24 bowling lanes, a laser tag arena, escape room, arcade games, pool tables and a bar and diner, the authority said. A spokesperson said the news was "hugely exciting", adding that the public had been calling for a city centre bowling alley for "many years".
Councillor Michael Graham added: "I've made no secret of my ambition for a bowling centre right in the heart of Wakefield, and I know it's something residents want to see too."This is the future of the high street." Boosting the city centre's entertainment and leisure options is a "key priority" in order to entice more residents, visitors and businesses to the town centre, the local authority said. The Debenhams store shut in May 2021 as part of a nationwide closure after the department store entered administration. It had been based in the shopping centre since it opened in 2011.
Preparation works for the bowling alley are set to begin soon and it is hoped the new space could be open by December. Retail analyst Catherine Shuttleworth previously told the BBC that as more people shop online, the "traditional town shopping centre" has to evolve. "Repurposing space for leisure is quite sensible - you need to become a destination for something," she said.A spokesperson for Tenpin added: "Our goal is to create a space where people of all ages can come together and we pride ourselves on being a hub for the local community." Breakdown of costs for failed Denbighshire Leisure sale
At a behind-closed-doors meeting on March 26, council members voted 25–18 in favour of selling DLL to the private sector. DLL was in the process of being sold to Merseyside-based private equity firm River Capital for £1.5 million, but on April 30, it was confirmed that the investor had pulled out. Denbighshire Council spent £62,000 on 'independent advice' relating to the failed sale of DLL. A FOI response has now revealed a detailed breakdown of those costs: Total: £62,000 The FOI also revealed internal project management costs, recorded from September to March, totalling £18,000. These costs, it was noted, would have been incurred regardless of the sale outcome. An FOI statement said: "Although the proposal that generated this advice will not now proceed, much of that advice will be relevant to alternative models for the company and is not therefore an abortive cost. "It should also be noted that this advice was sought in anticipation of a significant capital receipt of £1.5 million to be received by the Council for the sale of the shares and the revised contractual relationship would not only have prevented existing costs from increasing, but would result in the fee paid by the Council for the provision of leisure services reducing in each year of its operation over a ten year period by 10 per cent. "This 10 per cent reduction in year two would be £152,000 increasing cumulatively to a reduction of £930,000 by year 10."
