Delhi govt extends current EV policy till March 2026 to facilitate wider public consultation
Delhi government has extended the current Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy until March 31, 2026, as the draft of the new policy will undergo public consultation, which is expected to take time, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said on Tuesday. Singh said the policy extension was among the matters listed for Tuesday's Cabinet meeting, and it has been decided to extend the same. 'The current Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy has been extended until March 31, 2026, or until a new policy is approved, whichever is earlier,' Singh told PTI. The minister said the move aims to facilitate comprehensive consultations with all the relevant stakeholders, including citizens, industry experts, private organisations, and environmental groups. Singh added that during this extended period, key provisions of the policy will be discussed, including strengthening the EV charging infrastructure, reviewing subsidies and waivers to boost EV adoption, developing robust systems for safe e-waste and battery disposal, and clearly defining the role of the public and private sectors in advancing the electric mobility ecosystem. The current EV policy -- first introduced in 2020 during the previous Aam Aadmi Party rule -- lapsed in August 2023. The policy has been extended several times since then.

Meghalaya's first state-run university begins PG admissions
Meghalaya's first state-run university, Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU), has invited applications for postgraduate programmes for the academic session 2025-26, officials said on Tuesday. Various courses are being offered in the varsity's Tura and Shillong campuses, the University's Registrar, A Ch Marak, told PTI. In the Tura campus, postgraduate programmes are available in Anthropology, Economics, Education, Environmental Science, Garo, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology. The Shillong campus will offer postgraduate (PG) courses in Commerce, English, Khasi and Social Work, which are also simultaneously available at the Tura campus, he said. Established in 2011 through an Act of the state government, CWSSU operates from its permanent campus in Tura. The campus was constructed under Special Plan Assistance with an allocation of Rs 16.96 crore and completed in December 2022. With academic blocks, hostels, and administrative facilities, the campus has an area of more than 90 acres. The university is recognised under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, and is empowered to award degrees independently. The University Grants Commission (UGC) formally approved its degree-awarding status in December 2024. The institution began academic operations this year, with the Shillong campus set to open shortly. Admissions to CWSSU's PG programmes do not require the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), making the university an attractive option for students across the state. At least 11 colleges from across the state have been granted affiliation with the University. These colleges also admit students without CUET, unlike those under NEHU, which are bound by the CUET requirement as per NEP 2020. According to official sources, admissions to the PG courses will remain open for at least two to three weeks, and the application procedures and course details are available on the university's website. CWSSU's launch is seen as a significant milestone in Meghalaya's higher education sector, enhancing access and offering flexible admission pathways for students.

Four Indian fishermen held by Sri Lankan navy for trespassing
Colombo, Jul 22 (PTI) Four Indian fishermen were apprehended and their boat was seized by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in the island nation's territorial waters near Mannar, officials said. According to a statement issued by the Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday, the North Central Naval Command spotted multiple Indian fishing boats trespassing into Sri Lankan waters on Monday. Patrol vessels were deployed to drive them away, during which one Indian boat was intercepted and four fishermen were taken into custody, it said. The vessel and the detained fishermen were later brought to the Talaimannar Pier and handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Mannar for further legal action. The fishermen issue is a contentious one in the ties between India and Sri Lanka, with Lankan Navy personnel even firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait and seizing their boats in several alleged incidents of illegally entering the island nation's territorial waters.
