The reason the PGA Championship is strongest golf major of the lot

Daily Record13-05-2025

It is viewed as the fourth Major but the fields stack up every year with 99 of the top 100 playing at Quail Hollow
The PGA Championship is often harshly noted as the least special of golf's four Majors.
But, with 99 of the world's Top 100 playing this week at Quail Hollow, it is the one with the strongest-assembled fields of the lot. Billy Horschel's need for hip surgery means he is the only one of the elite hundred among the 156 starters not teeing it up in North Carolina.

The PGA Championship usually features the most highly ranked players of any major because its qualification criteria helps to build the field around the world rankings. All majors have differing qualification rules.

The Masters, won this year by Rory McIlroy, has the Top 50 with a smaller field gathering at Augusta including ex-Green Jacket winners, while the Open, held by Xander Schauffele, and US Open, currently the title of Bryson DeChambeau, have the Top 60 before the variety of exemptions and qualifications which are available to make the tournament, including the special opportunity for regional events which open doors for all players to have a go at making the big stage.
One other notable aspect of the PGA Championship which draws sneers from observers is that it is played on a variety of courses, some which don't meet the approval of critics.
The fabulous Augusta National hosts the Masters every year, while The Open Championship venue is chosen for a select few illustrious tracks on their rotation.
The US Open moves around, but the styles of golf needed for those venues are noted by most professionals to be similar.
Jon Rahm explained the potential differences with the various PGA venues as he said: 'When you go to Augusta, you know what you're getting. Same course every year.
"The US Open, nine out of ten times, you know what you're getting, depending on the weather. And same at the Open, right?

"It will be firmer or less, but you know what you're getting. It's this championship that will change venues and drastically change the way they set it up.
'Like the way Southern Hills might play, to the way this week might play, to the way Bethpage might play, they're all drastically different.

"So it's possibly the difference, which is more about your game needs to be a very high level as opposed to possibly the other three that you can adjust a little bit more, knowing what's coming.
'You get different things every time you come. It's very difficult to say that two of them were the same.
You can have some where you go into a play-off at five-under and then last year with 21-under wins it.

"So it's quite interesting. It definitely has a character of having that different character each time you come.'

Bruno Fernandes receives telling message from ex-Man Utd star after £300m snub

A former Manchester United star has reacted after Bruno Fernandes rejected a big-money move to Al-Hilal after the Saudi outfit made a staggering £300million offer Bruno Fernandes has been praised by former Manchester United star Ben Foster for snubbing a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. The United skipper disclosed this week that he had rejected the chance to exit Old Trafford for Al-Hilal. The decision came despite the Saudi Pro League club's willingness to fork out an eye-watering £300million package, which included £100m for United and a £200m contract for the Portuguese midfielder. The 30-year-old playmaker turned down the offer after stating his desire to maintain his career "at the highest level". ‌ Ex-United goalkeeper Ben Foster has now voiced his joy at Fernandes' decision to stay put, despite questioning his sanity with a tongue-in-cheek remark. ‌ Sharing his thoughts via his Cycling GK Instagram account, the ex-Wrexham shot-stopper said: "I'm so happy about it, because it just goes to show that some footballers actually do it for the love of the game - it's not all about money." "Not only that, we want to see the best players playing in the Premier League week in, week out, and Bruno Fernandes is one of those players." Speaking directly to Fernandes, Foster said: "Bruno, I don't know whether you're a little bit mad or just madly in love with football, either way, I love it, mate. I'm all over it and looking forward to watching you playing in the Premier League next season." Fernandes revealed at a press conference on Tuesday why he turned down a move to Al-Hilal as United plan for a rebuild under manager Ruben Amorim. Speaking while on international duty with Portugal, he said: "There was an opportunity. The [Al-Hilal] president called me and asked if I wanted to go there. "They were waiting for me. I spoke to coach Amorim. He asked me not to go. Manchester United didn't want to sell me. They don't need the money. If I had wanted to leave, they would have made it happen. ‌ "It [would have been] an easy move, even at a family level. I had João Cancelo there, my children are used to playing with him in the national team. We have a great friendship. But I want to maintain myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it." After a disappointing season which saw United finish 15th in the Premier League, Amorim, who succeeded Erik Ten Hag last November, is aiming to revamp his squad. The club has already made one major signing after bringing in Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5million, while interest has also been shown in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. ‌ Ex-United defender Gary Neville has lauded Fernandes' commitment to the club during a challenging period. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "He's so important. It would have been easy for him at the end of this season to say, 'Look, I'm done here'. This will endear him towards Manchester United fans even more. "To turn that money down at a point where Manchester United are at their lowest ebb and say, 'No, I want to fight through this, I want to see it through the other side, I want to come out and achieve things', I think it says a lot about him as a person, as a character. The club needs people who are going to run through a brick wall for them." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football. Gribben also secured bronze medals in the 60 metre and 200 metre events in London. But it took him 70 long years to finally achieve running stardom, with Gribben's first attempt at the sport coming in the 1950s. That didn't exactly go to plan, with octogenarian admitting he could barely stand up straight after a half-mile effort. I said, 'I'm not a runner', but I never stopped after it.' Gribben started to master the art of running when he moved to Mirfield, West Yorkshire, in 1979 — where he remains to this day. And like any good athlete, Gribben dedicates himself to a gruelling mid-week training schedule. He explained: 'Three nights at least of a 5km run, most days I'll do a 60 metre sprint, and then the other things are an hour at the local gym a couple of days a week.' He now runs 5km in around 40 minutes, and those Saturday morning slogs finally paid dividends when he clinched gold at the Masters. Gribben also revealed the spiritual kick he gets from running, adding: 'There's something in the spring, you hit one point where it is ecstasy, you're outside yourself almost, when you hit that speed that carries you the last whatever you need to get to the line. 'Sometimes I just say to my saviour, 'Well I'll run if you run with me'. 'I don't know that I get an answer but… I start putting on my trainers and it feels good to do.'

Cleland has served Saints since 2009, after joining as U20s manager under Derek McInnes and then stepping up to become assistant boss to Tommy Wright. The ex-Rangers and Everton star has stepped in as caretaker several times over the years and was part of the first-team coaching staff under Valakari last term. Saints will now bring in a coach/analyst from abroad, with a domestic-based number two being targeted. Valakari's son Paavo, who joined the staff mid-way through last season, will remain in his post as performance manager. Saints said: 'The club can confirm that there will be a restructuring of the football department as we look ahead to the 2025/26 season. 'Assistant manager Andy Kirk and first team coach Alex Cleland both depart. We thank them greatly for all of their contributions. 'Andy arrived at McDiarmid Park as assistant to Craig Levein and during his time with us, also took on the role of interim manager. 'He operated with professionalism throughout, and we wish him all the very best for the future. 'He played his part in us winning three pieces of major silverware – the Scottish Cup in 2014 and 2021, as well as the League Cup in 2021. 'Alex was also first team coach throughout numerous top six finishes and memorable European adventures, including advancing beyond both Rosenborg and FC Luzern. 'He stepped into the role of interim manager on more than one occasion and always went about his business with the utmost professionalism. 'Not just a positive influence on first team senior squad members, Alex has also helped shape the careers of countless young footballers who transitioned through our academy. 'Again, we thank Alex for his major contribution to St Johnstone Football Club and wish him the very best for the future.' Meanwhile, defender Sam McClelland, who is out of contract this summer, has undergone another operation on his injured achilles. The Northern Ireland international suffered the injury on the opening day of last season's Premiership so has been out of action since. Saints will give him facilities to continue his rehab while he builds up his fitness. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
