Scottie Scheffler rivals can take heart from Justin Thomas tale in US PGA finale
Justin Thomas may have missed the cut in the 107th US PGA Championship, but the two-time winner still offered hope to anyone aiming to deny Scottie Scheffler at Quail Hollow. A superb third round of 65 gave Scheffler a three-shot lead over Sweden's Alex Noren in pursuit of his third major title, the world number one having won the Masters in 2022 and 2024. Scheffler converted the 54-hole lead at Augusta National on both occasions and has gone on to win on each of the last five times he has been in such a position, most recently when cruising to an eight-shot win in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on his last start. Thirteen of the last 14 winners of the US PGA Championship were also either leading or within two strokes of the lead entering the final round, which is where Thomas comes in. Thomas was seven shots off the lead entering the final round at Southern Hills in 2022, but carded a closing 67 – his third of the week – before beating Will Zalatoris in a three-hole play-off. Chile's Mito Pereira held a one-shot lead with one hole to play, but found water off the tee on the 18th and ran up a double-bogey six to miss out on the play-off. Water is also very much in play on the closing stretch at Quail Hollow, where the par-four 16th, par-three 17th and par-four 18th are collectively known as 'The Green Mile' and form one of the toughest finishes on the PGA Tour. Not that Scheffler seemed to notice in round three as he followed a par on the 16th with birdies on the last two holes to separate himself from the chasing pack, although Noren navigated the last three holes in identical fashion. The 42-year-old former Ryder Cup winner's performance is remarkable given that it is just his second tournament since October due to a hamstring injury, a tie for 51st in last week's Truist Championship offering few indications that he would be challenging for a first major title in his 40th attempt. Noren would join 2016 Open champion Henrik Stenson as the only male Swedish players to have won a major, an achievement which would end a streak of nine straight American winners of the US PGA. However, with Scheffler leading and Davis Riley and JT Poston lurking a shot behind Noren, the odds favoured American dominance extending to a decade.

The reason the PGA Championship is strongest golf major of the lot
It is viewed as the fourth Major but the fields stack up every year with 99 of the top 100 playing at Quail Hollow The PGA Championship is often harshly noted as the least special of golf's four Majors. But, with 99 of the world's Top 100 playing this week at Quail Hollow, it is the one with the strongest-assembled fields of the lot. Billy Horschel's need for hip surgery means he is the only one of the elite hundred among the 156 starters not teeing it up in North Carolina. The PGA Championship usually features the most highly ranked players of any major because its qualification criteria helps to build the field around the world rankings. All majors have differing qualification rules. The Masters, won this year by Rory McIlroy, has the Top 50 with a smaller field gathering at Augusta including ex-Green Jacket winners, while the Open, held by Xander Schauffele, and US Open, currently the title of Bryson DeChambeau, have the Top 60 before the variety of exemptions and qualifications which are available to make the tournament, including the special opportunity for regional events which open doors for all players to have a go at making the big stage. One other notable aspect of the PGA Championship which draws sneers from observers is that it is played on a variety of courses, some which don't meet the approval of critics. The fabulous Augusta National hosts the Masters every year, while The Open Championship venue is chosen for a select few illustrious tracks on their rotation. The US Open moves around, but the styles of golf needed for those venues are noted by most professionals to be similar. Jon Rahm explained the potential differences with the various PGA venues as he said: 'When you go to Augusta, you know what you're getting. Same course every year. "The US Open, nine out of ten times, you know what you're getting, depending on the weather. And same at the Open, right? "It will be firmer or less, but you know what you're getting. It's this championship that will change venues and drastically change the way they set it up. 'Like the way Southern Hills might play, to the way this week might play, to the way Bethpage might play, they're all drastically different. "So it's possibly the difference, which is more about your game needs to be a very high level as opposed to possibly the other three that you can adjust a little bit more, knowing what's coming. 'You get different things every time you come. It's very difficult to say that two of them were the same. You can have some where you go into a play-off at five-under and then last year with 21-under wins it. "So it's quite interesting. It definitely has a character of having that different character each time you come.' First round tee-times [Thursday, May 15] - in full 12.00pm. PGA Championship returning to Southern Hills in 2032
May 13 - Southern Hills Country Club will host its record-extending sixth PGA Championship in 2032, the PGA of America announced Tuesday. The course in Tulsa, Okla., most recently hosted the major in 2022, when Justin Thomas won in a playoff against Will Zalatoris. Tiger Woods won the PGA Championship at that course in 2007. All five of the course's PGA Championships have come since 1970. It also was the site of the U.S. Open in 1958, 1977 and 2001. "We could not be more excited to return to Southern Hills Country Club for the 114th PGA Championship in May 2032," PGA of America president Don Rea Jr. said. "Southern Hills and its incredible members as well as the entire Tulsa community have always welcomed the PGA of America, our PGA Members and our Major Championships with authentic, neighborly hospitality. We look forward to bringing the PGA Championship back to not only a first class community, but a world renowned golf course that will challenge the world's best golfers as they compete for the iconic Wanamaker Trophy." The golf world is gearing up for the 2025 PGA Championship this week at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. --Field Level Media

This Oklahoma golf course was just named the host of the 2032 PGA Championship
This Oklahoma golf course was just named the host of the 2032 PGA Championship Southern Hills Country Club, designed by Perry Maxwell and opened in 1936, will make it an even six-pack of PGA Championships, the PGA of America announced on Tuesday. The course in Tulsa, Oklahoma, will host the 2032 PGA Championship, making it the first venue to host the event six times. 'We could not be more excited to return to Southern Hills Country Club for the 114th PGA Championship in May 2032,' said PGA of America President Don Rea Jr., PGA Master Professional and Owner/Operator of Augusta Ranch Golf Club (Arizona). 'Southern Hills and its incredible members as well as the entire Tulsa community have always welcomed the PGA of America, our PGA Members and our Major Championships with authentic, neighborly hospitality. We look forward to bringing the PGA Championship back to not only a first class community, but a world renowned golf course that will challenge the world's best golfers as they compete for the iconic Wanamaker Trophy.' The course was renovated multiple times by the likes of Robert Trent Jones and Keith Foster, and in 2019 Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner wrapped up work on a restoration that put much of Maxwell's original intent back into the layout. Southern Hills has been host to a slew of championships, ranging from the U.S. Women's Open to the Senior PGA Championship and counts among its men's majors five past PGA Championships (1970, '82, '94, '07, '22) and three U.S. Opens ('58, '77 and '01). In 2022, with help from Mito Pereira's heartbreaking debacle on the 72nd hole, Justin Thomas hoisted the 2-foot tall, 27-pound silver Wanamaker Trophy for a second time after defeating Will Zalatoris in a three-hole aggregate playoff. The layout is No. 1 among private courses in Oklahoma in Golfweek's Best rankings, and it is No. 38 on Golfweek's Best list of classic courses built before 1960 in the U.S.

‘Keep the Arts Alive': Wichita Falls artist turns passion into inspiration
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — When Glen Bacus graduated from high school, art and baseball were his goals in life. These dreams led him to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he majored in illustration. After graduating, Bacus became a freelance illustrator and took odd jobs, but quickly realized art directors would always have control over his work. 'Make this blue, make that triangle, do this, do that,' Bacus said. 'They always wanted to manipulate what you made into something more of their vision.' It was another job that led Bacus to Wichita Falls, and after leaving that job, he took a position as a News Photographer for KFDX. During his interview, he brought his artwork with him, and the news director loved it but didn't have a creative position for him. Bacus put in the work for a year until a position opened up and he began creating commercials for business. In 2013 he was promoted to promotion director. Now, Bacus makes logos, graphics, and commercials promoting KFDX and Texomas FOX, but his creative endeavors don't end there. Fueled by his love for music, Bacus created a painting inspired by Prince following his passing that ended up on Prince's wall at Paisley Park and now hangs in the museum at the same place. For those local to Wichita Falls, Bacus's art can be seen all around, recognizable by his unique use of patterns and colors. Three Mane Event horses were painted by him, along with the mural 'Love Bunny.' Most recently, Bacus, along with other artists, adopted a 'monster' from Southern Hill Elementary. These monsters are created by students at Southern Hills. Each artist adopts a different monster and expands upon the kid's creation. According to Southern Hills teacher Stacey Barton, 51 monsters have been adopted by local artists. All 51 were on display at The Lab at the May After Hours Artwalk. Bacus saw the exhibit last year and loved the kids' imaginations, so he wanted to be a part of it. 'Kids have the best imaginations, and it's just good to keep the arts alive in young people,' Bacus said. For Bacus, art was never about being famous or well-known, he just loves to do it. 'I just paint for the love of painting and to relieve stress,' Bacus said. 'I feel like I am constantly looking for the 'art' in objects and in life.'
