Izaac and Maria shine, Dabang exacts revenge against Challengers
The 9-6 victory at the EKA Arena on Wednesday not only brought a smile to captain G. Sathiyan's face — despite being beaten by arch rival Harmeet Desai in his singles affair — but also catapulted the Delhi outfit to the top of the standings.
Izaac – the Singaporean teenager – set the tone for Dabang by overcoming veteran Tiago Apolonia, the five-time Olympian, in the first match.
Despite being ranked much lower than the Portugal paddler, Izaac's raw power and quick reflexes helped him win all three games in the battle between the youngest and oldest overseas participants of the season.
Zeng Jian – Izaac's fellow Singaporean – then brought parity to the scoreline by handing Dabang's Diya Chitale a lesson in consistently finishing off rallies.
Sathiyan and Maria then teamed up to defeat Harmeet and Zeng before Harmeet levelled the scoreline at six games apiece after trailing 1-0.
Harmeet upped the ante and increased his pace substantially to force Sathiyan into errors at key moments.
But Maria, the Spaniard, cruised past UTT debutant Sayali Wani — who was preferred ahead of Krittwika Sinha Roy — in the deciding rubber to extend Dabang's points tally to 19.
Later, Reeth Rishya's clean slate in the last women's singles helped PBG Pune Jaguars outplay Kolkata ThunderBlades 10-5 in the night match and join Dabang Delhi as joint leaders in the points table.
The results: Dabang Delhi TTC bt Dempo Goa Challengers 9-6 (Quek Izaac bt Tiago Apolonia 11-8, 11-9, 11-9; Diya Chitale lost to Zeng Jian 9-11, 5-11, 6-11; Maria Xiao & G. Sathiyan bt Zeng & Harmeet Desai 8-11, 11-5, 11-8; Sathiyan lost to Harmeet 11-8, 9-11, 9-11; Maria bt Sayali Wani 11-3, 11-7, 11-6).
PBG Pune Jaguars bt Kolkata ThunderBlades 10-5 (Alvaro Robles bt Quadri Aruna 10-11, 11-10, 11-10; Dina Meshref bt Adriana Diaz 11-8, 1-11, 11-10; Dina & Anirban Ghosh bt Diaz & Ankur Bhattacharjee 11-9, 11-9, 7-11; Anirban lost to Ankur 8-11, 7-11, 11-8; Reeth Rishya bt Selenadeepthi Selvakumar 11-9, 11-8, 11-8).

It will be difficult for us, but it won't be easy for them: FC Goa coach Marquez on AFC Champions League 2 qualifier vs Al Seeb
Ahead of a tense AFC Champions League Two qualifier against Oman's Al Seeb on Wednesday, FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez is aware that on paper, the Gaurs will face a stronger opponent, but refused to get bogged down by pressure and said it is a great place to be in. 'I think most of the teams in India would like to be in this position and to play this match. As usual, it will be a difficult match for us, but it will not be easy for them as well,' Marquez told the media ahead of the match. Oman, currently ranked 79th by FIFA, is still in a strong place to bid for a spot in the FIFA World Cup next year, and Marquez pointed out to Al Seeb has many of Oman's national team players in its ranks. ALSO READ: Subroto Cup 2025 to kick off on August 19, will have anti-age-fraud measures and teams from Nepal, Sri Lanka 'When you play these kind of competitions, you know that the opponent will be strong. Football in Oman is constantly growing, and they are still in the fight to qualify for the World Cup. A lot of players from the national team play in Al Seeb. But I feel it will be an equal game, and we will have chances. Obviously, it won't be easy for us, but it won't be easy for them either,' said the Spaniard. According to the FC Goa coach, the crowd will have an important role to play in helping the Gaurs get over the line and urged the fans to turn up in numbers at the Fatorda Stadium. Citing FC Goa's Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 semifinal second-leg clash against Bengaluru FC as an example, Marquez said, 'In our last match here, we lost to Bengaluru FC on aggregate. But the connection I saw between the crowd and the players was special. From there, we went on to win the Super Cup, and tomorrow, I hope we perform well again. FC Goa has strengthened three positions with foreign signings -- forward Javier Siverio (who has already played under Marquez during his time in Hyderabad FC and Las Palmas), midfielder David Timor and defender Pol Moreno. While Marquez acknowledged that the experience they will bring will be crucial for Goa's chances against a strong Al Seeb side, he was quick to point out that for the team to perform well, everyone in the squad needs to perform. With Indian football in choppy waters and the future of the ISL uncertain, Marquez admitted that this will be an 'all-or-nothing' match for FC Goa.

Emma Raducanu in tense exchange with umpire over crying baby; official's remark slammed as 'unprofessional'
Emma Raducanu on Monday found herself in a tense situation during her Cincinnati Open defeat to world number one Aryna Sabalenka. The 22-year-old lost 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) in a marathon thriller lasting more than three hours against the defending champion. Trailing 3-4, Raducanu struggled to close out the game, reaching deuce 13 times. While fending off multiple break points, controversy erupted when she pulled out of her service motion to point out a distressed child in the stands. "It's been, like, 10 minutes," she told the umpire after retreating to the baseline. The official replied: 'It's a child. Do you want me to kick the child out of the stadium?' Raducanu shrugged before a spectator shouted 'yes' on her behalf. 'I can call in, but we need to continue for the moment,' the umpire added before play resumed. The remark did not sit well with fans on social media. One wrote: 'Why is Emma Raducanu being guilt-tripped by the umpire for a child screaming in the crowd? That was unprofessional and unnecessary.' Another added: 'Surely ask the parent to take the baby out, no? This is a bit dramatic from the umpire.' A third said: 'Why is a kid there? Any noise disruption at Wimbledon — the most prestigious tennis competition of them all — stops play until the issue is resolved.' Raducanu went on to win the game and draw level at 4-4 but eventually fell to world number one Sabalenka, who will take on Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the last 16. After the match, Raducanu told reporters: 'She's [Sabalenka] world No. 1 for a reason. "I pushed her more than I did at Wimbledon, so that's an improvement.' She did not, however, address the incident involving the child.
