2025 MLB Prediction, Pick: Back Giants to Conquer NL West
Last week, the Red Sox shocked the baseball world by sending three-time all-star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster trade.
The trade came just hours after the Red Sox swept the Yankees with a 2-0 victory, a game in which Devers homered.
All seemed well in Red Sox land, as they had pushed themselves over .500 and looked to be on track to finally fulfill their pre-season potential.
So, what happened, and is there a bet to be made going forward based on this deal?
Let's take a look.
Well, Devers' unhappiness has been well-documented, dating back to Spring Training when there was much discussion about what position Devers would (and wouldn't) play, since free-agent acquisition Alex Bregman plays third base, the same position as Devers.
An unhappy player with a lofty contract was enough reason for the Red Sox to unload the lefty slugger. Still, the seemingly modest package of pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, as well as a couple of prospects headed to Boston, is what made this deal such a head-scratcher. The Red Sox trio of elite prospects, Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell, now have one less roadblock in their daily playing path. That is another benefit to what is still, despite the explanation, a baffling move and an underwhelming return for a Red Sox team that has also dealt Mookie Betts and Chris Sale in recent years, with very little to show for it.
As far as the Giants, they receive a desperately needed left-handed presence in their lineup. They now have a boosted offense that can support a dominant 1-2 punch in their starting rotation, with pitchers Logan Webb and Robbie Ray. They now sit with World Series odds in the 34-1 range for those that think they can win it all, and have 18-1 odds to reach the World Series.
But the market that interests me is the NL West, as the Giants now have 19-1 odds to win the division at FanDuel Sportsbook. Yes, they would have to topple the behemoth that is the Los Angeles Dodgers . But with the Dodgers' inability to keep pitchers healthy (Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Roki Sasaki are just some of their pitchers on the injured list, with no timetable to return), the defending champs are vulnerable. Yes, they are still the best team and the rightful favorite, but they're not the invincible juggernaut they looked like heading into the season.
At 19-1 odds, with a newly acquired Devers, and perhaps more moves up their sleeves, the Giants have the ability to compete with the mighty Dodgers and possibly erase the modest four-game deficit. Of all the numbers available, Fanduel's 19-1 odds to win the NL West is the most attractive, especially considering this number is in the 8-1 range at most other books.
Taking a shot on the Giants to beat out the Dodgers in the NL West, as they did in 2021, will make for an exciting summer wager.

That's not going to help the calls for robot umps. After a curveball was rightfully called low for ball two, Yamamoto struck out Tatis with a cutter out of the zone. So he had to settle for an 11-pitch, three-strikeout inning. There has been one immaculate inning in MLB this season so far, thrown by Cal Quantrill for the Miami Marlins on May 18. They sound like a simple enough achievement, but the fact is they are extremely fleeting. Only 118 have been thrown in MLB history, compared to 326 no-hitters recognized by MLB, and only three pitchers — Sandy Koufax, Chris Sale, Max Scherzer — have thrown more than two in their careers.

He did so successfully, but in the process, he became a leader in the Giants locker room. Further, he became a mentor to Neal. Advertisement Now, Neal is embarking on a new journey. Pushed out of a starting job, Neal is hoping to save his career by moving to guard. Finally healthy, New York has granted him that opportunity in the offseason. While he isn't necessarily challenging for a starting spot any time soon, his transition seems to be going well. On Wednesday, Eluemunor previewed Neal's position change. 'I think that he's truly bought into it, and it's been cool for me to just watch the tape and just, he's a humongous dude,' Eluemunor told reporters. '… Obviously him going from tackle to guard is a big transition. And I've done it myself a couple times in my career, so to see him buying into it and to see how serious he's taking it is really cool to see. I was telling him, I was like, if you lock in and you truly buy into this, you can be a really good guard just from seeing how he's done in the spring. I'm excited to see him in the summer and putting pads on.' The writing has been on the wall for the second first-round pick of the Giants' 2022 NFL Draft. But inside, there's reason to believe he could find more success. Rather than facing off against uber-athletic edge rushers and having to operate in space, Neal can rely more on his anchor to win between the tackles. Even so, the speed of the game is a bit different at guard. Perhaps that will allow Neal's aggressiveness to shine. That timing, Eluemunor says, will be paramount. 'I'd say the speed,' Eluemunor said. 'Everything at guard is bang, bang. At tackle, it's more patience and you have to be willing – you have to know when to strike at tackle essentially. At guard, those big guys like Dexter (Lawrence) they are on you within a millisecond and you got to be able to figure out what you need to do and how you can defeat them when you are blocking and ultimately win the block within a matter of seconds because if not, then they're going to be on the quarterback.' Advertisement Neal has been much better in the run game than pass protection as a pro, and kicking inside should emphasize that strength. If he can win with the same skills that made him a top-10 pick, there's room for him to make up ground on a rookie contract that's underwater. He already has Eluemunor's seal of approval.
