New traditional South African restaurant opens in Sandton

Sandton has welcomed a new spot for food lovers craving traditional South African flavours. Tasty Nation, the local food brand best known for its convenient home-style meals, has just opened its first quick service restaurant right in time for Joburg's chilly season.
What's on the menu at Tasty Nation
Tasty Nation's menu pays tribute to the country's rich culinary heritage. Guests can enjoy classic favourites like Mogodu (beef tripe in a thin gravy), Thlakwana (slow-cooked cow heels), and flame-grilled Peri Peri Chicken and Beef Short Rib.
Comfort food staples such as Durban-style mutton curry, bobotie, and indulgent desserts like Malva pudding and koeksisters round out the menu.
'With our new quick service restaurant, we're creating a space where people can come together and enjoy familiar flavours,' says Kelly Lewis, CEO of Tasty Nation. 'It's about making traditional African cuisine both accessible and inviting.'

A flavourful experience that feels like home
When Time Out visited Tasty Nation, we were treated to a flavour-packed experience. The adventurer in me gave almost everything a try (I decided to skip the Mogodu as a matter of personal preference), and at one point, I was tempted to see if someone's grandmother wasn't holed up in the kitchen churning out these delicious dishes.
My highlights included the Peri Peri chicken livers and the tender durban-style mutton curry served with rotis. The curry was milder than its Durban counterpart, but full of authentic flavour—a nod to Kelly's Durban roots.
Another standout dish was the Nhloko (beef head meat in a thin gravy with onions and chillies) served with soft, spongy Dombolo dumplings—perfect for soaking up that gravy.
As a side note the restaurant's warm, vibey music selection added to the experience, creating a space that feels as comforting as the food. If the atmosphere remains this consistent, Tasty Nation could easily become one of Joburg's go-to spots for traditional food with a modern twist.

Procrastination may be the thief of time, but in the right circumstances, it can be fun. The other day, I was enjoying myself in St James's, my favourite London arrondissement. There are delightful contrasts, from the grandeur of the royal palaces and the St James's Street clubs to the charming, intimate side streets and alleys with their pubs and restaurants. The late Jacob Rothschild would often cross from his palatial office in Spencer House to Crown Passage, in order to lunch at Il Vicolo (regularly praised here). His Lordship never bothered to reserve a table. Instead, he would send someone across with his form of booking: a bottle of Château Lafite. Crown Passage is also home to the Red Lion, one of the oldest hostelries in London. It has excellent beer, no music and no teenagers. One grows curmudgeonly with age. Though I never thought of Alan Clark as a pub habitué, he did visit the Red Lion, where he was indeed an egregious figure – to employ correctly just about the most misused adjective in current English. But he always seemed to enjoy himself: a change from Brooks's, perhaps. St James's is also full of art galleries and someone then said that there was an interesting exhibition round the corner in Mason's Yard. We went and were not disappointed. Harry Moore-Gwyn specialises in British art from the late 19th century onwards. His current offerings are all easily worth a visit. There are renowned names: Gwen John, Walter Sickert, Charles Rennie Mackintosh et al. But there were other figures whom I had never come across (so much the worse for me) such as Herbert Dalziel. However, I was particularly interested in Harry's Roger Frys. Fry, though no genius, was a serious painter who ought to be re-evaluated. Harry's walls offer much to enjoy, much to think about, much to covet, and after those pleasures, you are no distance from food and drink. Later on, our conversation moved on to another art form: winemaking. A friend had just come back from South Africa and was able to bring some good news from that benighted land. Since the passing of the old regime, the wine industry has flourished. Foreign markets are much easier, and there has been a lot of investment. It remains to be seen whether all this will continue to flourish as so much of that potentially glorious country succumbs to chaos. His Lordship would send someone across with his form of booking: a bottle of Château Lafite We heard one depressing non-economic story. Alan Paton's Cry, the Beloved Country is much the finest literary work to come from South Africa. Everyone ought to read it. But a (white) youngster, educated at a good South African private school, had never even heard of it. Cry, indeed. South Africa has produced fine wine for centuries. But today the vineyards have spread outwards from the Stellenbosch region, especially to Swartland, which I have never visited. I am told that the winemakers are optimistic. Theirs is, of course, an optimistic profession. But let us hope they are right. The theme broadened to wine and war. During both world wars the French made remarkable quantities of wine, some of it excellent. Then again, for the poilus, wine was the equivalent of grog for the Royal Navy. If wine had not been available, the mutinies would have been much worse. Even so, miracles were achieved. I remember Alan Clark – no pub that day – treating David Owen and me to a bottle of 1916 La Mission Haut-Brion (in the Diaries, he says 'Latour' but I trust my own memory). Those grapes were ripening during the Somme. The grapes of wrath can produce great wine.

Photo by Jurassic Encounter Although officially a new attraction, it's clear that Lost Kingdom is a new name for Jurassic Encounter, a show that did the rounds in the summer of 2021 (you can read our old review here). Essentially it's a large scale outdoor attraction wherein audiences wander around – and occasionallty sit on – dozens of life-sized dinosaurs, some of them animatronic. Back then we found it impressive in scale but a bit lo-fi compared to other similar dinosaur attractions; however we can't speak for its renamed 2025 incarnation. You can have a brilliant holiday hopping between hostels or budget rental apartments, but if you're celebrating something special or just fancy splashing out, a luxury hotel is a proper treat. Thankfully, TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice Awards have been announced, and the online review platform has curated a roundup of stellar places to stay based on hotels that garner the most 'above-and-beyond' reviews from users over the last year. Of the site's eight million listings, less than one percent acquired this accolade, but the best of the best hotels claiming first place overall was the Santiago De Alfama Boutique Hotel, a stunning stay in Lisbon. It's already claimed a spot on Time Out's roundup of Lisbon's coolest hotels, boasts seriously outstanding views of Old Alfama and the Tagus River, and is surrounded by lovely, historic streets. Oh, and it's only a 15-minute walk from Lisbon's famous Praça do Comércio. 'The hotel's luxe amenities, charming décor, artistic vibe, and reasonable prices create a memorable stay. Guests can relax on the peaceful patio, sample delicious dining, or explore nearby attractions with the help of the knowledgeable concierge,' writes TripAdvisor.
