Johari Ghani to assume duties of natural resources minister after Nik Nazmi's exit, says chief secretary to govt
Chief Secretary to the Government and Cabinet Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, in a statement today, said the matter was agreed upon by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and conveyed during the Cabinet meeting on July 9.
On May 28, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced his resignation as Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, effective July 4.
Nik Nazmi, 43, said he had done his best to implement key reforms since assuming the role of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister in December 2022, and later the restructured ministry.
Among the notable achievements during his tenure were amendments to the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and enhanced transparency in the reporting of Environmental Impact Assessments.
He also cited his failure to retain the vice-president post in the recent PKR election as one of the factors that influenced his decision to step down. — Bernama

Bangladesh Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus visits Malaysia for official talks
SEPANG: The Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh, Dr Muhammad Yunus, arrived in Malaysia today for a three-day official visit. He was invited by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss key bilateral matters. The commercial flight carrying Yunus and his delegation landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 at 7.47 pm. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail welcomed them at the Bunga Raya Complex of KLIA. Yunus inspected a guard of honour consisting of 28 officers and personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment. The visit reciprocates Anwar's official trip to Bangladesh in October 2024, according to Wisma Putra. Tomorrow, Yunus will attend an official welcoming ceremony at Perdana Putra Complex. He will then hold a bilateral meeting with Anwar to review Malaysia-Bangladesh relations. Key discussion areas include trade, investment, labour, education, tourism, and defence. Both leaders will also exchange views on regional and international developments. Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed during the visit. The MoUs cover defence, energy, strategic studies, semiconductor capacity building, and trade promotion. An Exchange of Notes will also be signed for diplomatic training and higher education. Anwar will host an official luncheon at Seri Perdana Complex in honour of Yunus and his delegation. On Wednesday, Yunus will deliver a public lecture at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He will also be conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business by UKM. Yunus will engage with members of the Yunus Social Business Centre community during his visit. In 2024, Malaysia-Bangladesh trade reached RM13.35 billion, marking a 5.1 per cent increase from 2023. Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner in South Asia. Major Malaysian exports to Bangladesh include petroleum products, palm oil, and chemicals. Imports from Bangladesh consist of textiles, footwear, and manufactured goods. RM6.2b project to ease Bukit Merah water woes heads to Cabinet this week, says Perak MB
TELUK INTAN, Aug 11 — The Cabinet paper on the implementation of the water transfer project to Bukit Merah to address the critical water shortage problem in northern Perak will be brought to this week's cabinet meeting. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the paper took into account requests and comments from the state government because the water supply is the state's right and his party knows the best course of action for the project. 'The implementation process also needs to give importance to contractors in the state. We have decided that the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation should agree to the collaboration of PKNPk (Perak State Development Corporation) and Gamuda as the implementers, taking into account the involvement of local small contractors,' he said. He said this at a press conference after the Customer Day Programme at Teluk Intan Municipal Council Hall, Langkap here today. Saarani said the water transfer project from Sungai Perak to Bukit Merah, which was implemented through a joint venture (JV) between PKNPk and Gamuda Bhd, costing about RM6.2 billion, was seen to provide economic benefits to the people of the state. According to Saarani, the project alignment was determined as a result of a series of workshops involving state government representatives to ensure its implementation meets the state's water needs. He said the project would benefit the agricultural irrigation system in northern Perak and meet the water needs of the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP) in the Kerian district. 'I hope this project can be expedited because we want to solve the problem of agricultural irrigation in the north and help with KIGIP's water needs. 'If there is a surplus (of water), then we will consider selling water to Penang,' he said. Last July, Gamuda Bhd through a JV with PKNPk was given a mandate by the state government to design, build and operate a water treatment and distribution facility located in Kerian. The project will supply treated water to the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP), while the surplus supply will be channeled to Penang. It will be implemented through privatization, where the agreement is expected to be finalised within 90 days, with a minimum concession period of 40 years and is expected to begin operating by 2030. — Bernama

‘No stone must be left unturned': Sabah governor orders full probe into 13-year-old Zara Qairina's death
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 11 — Head of State Yang diPertua Negeri Sabah Tun Musa Aman said he has ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the passing of 13-year-old schoolgirl Zara Qairina Mahathir. The former chief minister-turned-governor said that the people were seeking justice in her tragic death and no stone must be left unturned in the investigation. 'This investigation must be conducted with the utmost diligence, without fear or favour, and guided solely in the pursuit of truth and justice,' he said in a statement today. 'Seeking justice is not vengeance. It is the fulfilment of Allah's command to protect the weak and punish the wrongdoer,' he added. He also reiterated his call to the public not to engage in baseless speculation, spread unfounded accusations, or promote conspiracy theories related to this case. 'Such actions not only risk jeopardising the integrity of the investigation but may also inflict further emotional distress on Zara's family. 'The Palace also urges the public to allow the due process of law to take its course and stand in solidarity with the family as they seek answers and closure,' he said. He said that a state-level prayer session will be held for Zara this Thursday August 14 at the city mosque, as well as all mosques and surau throughout Sabah. 'Tuan Yang Terutama Tun encourages muslims to join in this event and those of the non-muslim faith to pray for Zara in their own respective way. The safety and well-being of our children must always remain our highest priority,' he said. Zara's body was found on the ground floor near her dormitory of her religious boarding school in Papar last July 16, and she was pronounced dead and buried without a post mortem. However, family members have raised concerns of possible bullying and foul play and questioned authorities on the lack of investigation and handling of her death. Public concern and anger further increased following speculation of the involvement of 'VIPs' in the incident, prompting ministers, the police chief, and other figures including Musa himself to issue statements denying familial links to the case. Public pressure has also prompted the Attorney General's office to order the exhumation and post mortem of Zara's body over the weekend. She was reburied early this morning in Sipitang after an eight-hour autopsy from 11am Sunday. Crowds of people were seen at every point from her exhumation at the Tanjung Ubi Islamic Cemetery, to the hospital and again at her reburial at 1.45am. Zara's family lawyer Shahlan Jufri, said that findings from the autopsy could not be revealed as investigations were still ongoing. He told reporters that the post-mortem report was not a public document and could only be revealed in court if an inquest is ordered by the Attorney General to ascertain the cause of death.
