Rhyl Journal7 days ago
It came in the 3,000-metre race at the Trafford Open Track Meeting, in which he was seeded in the third race of the evening.
His aim was to break nine minutes and 45 seconds, and he executed it perfectly, recording negative splits and crossing the line in first place in 9-41.
On Saturday (July 19), Jonah took on a captain's role and agreed to help Matty Smith achieve his goal in the Nova parkrun.
Again, things worked out well and Matty, who is making a rapid return to fitness, finished 10th in 19.49.
Dafydd Montgomery was involved in a fascinating four-way battle and although he lost out in a sprint finish, he had the satisfaction of recording another PB.
Erin Thomas and Eve Manifold made it 1-2 for the club's ladies, and the race also marked another step in a return to race fitness for supervet Roger Harrison-Jones.
The Nova placings were: 4 Dafydd Montgomery 18.14 (pb), 5 Dave Ellis 18.52, 10 Matty Smith 19.49, 11 Jonah Armstrong 19.54, 13 Dean Longley 20.05, 21 Erin Thomas 21.17 (pb), 22 Darrell Jones 21.18, 26 Lewis Pierce 21.33, 28 Eve Manifold 21.49, 29 Judah Eastwell 22.06 (pb), 35 Paul Sanders 22.59, 50 Steve Weedman 24.22, 53 Neil Davidson 24.29, 77 Zack Webster 26.01, 107 Cathy Wood 28.36, 119 Casey Blake 29.22, 120 Andy Scott 29.23, 138 Debbie Weedman 31.02, 214 Steve Hatfield 38.37, 246 Roger Harrison-Jones 47.27, 247 Claudia Smith 47.39.

Gareth Ainsworth doubles down on Shrewsbury exit as Gillingham revolution takes shape

INTERVIEW: Gareth Ainsworth is relishing "the journey" he has embarked on with Gillingham, who he joined late last season following his shock departure from Shrewsbury Gareth Ainsworth has long been at peace with his shock call to quit Shrewsbury and now he's ready to rock Gillingham's world. The 'Wild Thing' - lead vocalist of The Cold Blooded Hearts - requires no introduction in EFL managerial circles. ‌ During 10-and-a-half years at Wycombe, his heavy-metal football yielded exceptional results, propelling Wanderers from the fourth tier of English football into the Championship. ‌ And following two short-lived spells in west London (with QPR) and Shropshire, he wants to run it back. ‌ Ainsworth said ahead of next week's League Two opener at Accrington Stanley: "I just want my players to feel like they belong to something. When we look at football, we're in a privileged position compared to other walks of life. "Gillingham's identify was getting a little bit muddled up with changes of personnel, both players and managers. We want to bring that identity back, this summer has been a big mental shift of the whole place." Ex-Shrewsbury midfielder Jamie Tolley accused Ainsworth of "promising the world but delivering nothing" when the 52-year-old left the New Meadow for Priestfield in March. But the long-haired gaffer makes no secret of the fact the ambitious pitch from Gillingham's American owners Brad and Shannon Galinson ignited the fire within. Ainsworth certainly knows how to get a place bouncing, his band's latest gig was just a few weeks ago in Soho, and he plans to front an electric Kentish revolution. When asked if he now feels pressure to vindicate his Shrewsbury departure, he said: "No, not at all. ‌ "Managers are restricted in what they can say with their contracts, I wish I could have said a lot more. "My justification for coming to Gillingham sits well with me, no problem at all. ‌ "I'm on a journey and I bought into the journey at Shrewsbury, I wish it went differently, it was a nice place to live. "People will laugh and say I'm not loyal but you've got the wrong guy, I don't need to prove anything to anyone." ‌ Ainsworth was such a coup for Gills, the bookies have them among the favourites for promotion. He isn't buying that, however, adding: "It's flattering but I don't know where the substance in that has come from. We haven't made £1million signings, we've signed three players. "Thank you but we're focusing on the journey, it's a two-year project centred around improving, the next level is way down the line for me." ‌ Ainsworth's ranks have been bolstered by the capture of ex-Burnley and Stoke City striker Sam Vokes and he's also optimistic he'll get Bradley Dack fit and firing. He continued: "We should be seen as underdogs, just like we were at Wycombe. Age is irrelevant to me, if you are good enough, you're good enough. If you look at the history of my success, it's come with experience. ‌ "Adebayo Akinfenwa, the partnership we had at Wycombe, Craig Mackail-Smith, Nathan Tyson, Marcus Bean, Sam Saunders, Joe Jacobson, Matt Bloomfield, the list is endless. "The owners have brought me in and told me to manage how I want. It was a really good move getting me in early so I could look over the team for the last few games [nine] of the season. "They just want success, they enjoy winning and the thrill of it - so that's what we're going to try and do."

Rival managers Gary McConnell and Neill Hughes both used to coach in Flint Town United's youth academy while Town's key signing of the summer is former Llay goal-getter Jonny Taylor. 'I know Neill well and I know his team will want to play football. It's a tough one to kick off the season with,' said McConnell, who has taken over the manager's job from Gav Parry. Set for his debut is Llay old boy Taylor and McConnell is pleased to snap up the former Cefn Druids and Rhyl marksman. 'Jonny reached out to us and I think it's a great addition for the club,' added McConnell. 'He's experienced, he'll give us a little more edge and he reminds me of how I was as a player.' Taylor is one of a number of new signings for Town, whose new arrivals also include Kian Brick, Joe Hancock, Lewis James, Alister Randles and Jacob Dempsey. Both sides will be rivals in the Ardal North West League this season where Llay's Hughes will hope to lead his team back into Cymru North. And their chances have been boosted by keeping last season's top scorer Jon Collo on their books. There's a belting derby between Cefn Albion and Rhos Aelwyd whose boss Gareth Jones said: 'Whilst last season was tough for our young squad, we defied the doubters and deserved to stay in the league with the points acquired. 'Our youth system is incredible and at least five players will progress to the senior team, with the addition of Owen Czerniak (Gresford) and Shrewsbury-based Arryn Matthee.' Jack Pawley can't wait for the season to kick off at Coedpoeth United. Pawley is the new man in charge and will be looking to knock out visitors Deiniolen. With the whole of last year's unbeatable U19s team signing forms, Pawley will be spoilt for choice picking his starting XI. 'As a club, we're all very excited for the new season,' said Pawley, who will be assisted by Karl Partington, Aaron Camplin and Adam Taylor. 'We have got a great bunch of lads and you can sense that they all want to do well.' The only downer for Coedpoeth is that new signing Rob Reynolds is out for 10 weeks after with an ankle injury. Chirk AAA's new manager Ryan Roberts will have a new-look squad ahead of Sunday's tie at home against Kinmel Bay. Last season's leading scorer Tom Freeman returns after a short spell at Brickfield Rangers while Ash Maws, Ollie Roberts and Matty Hayes have joined from Cefn Druids. Matty Tombs comes in from Overton while several of Chirk's U19 team will be in the squad including Louie Irving, Tommy McArdle, Alfie Harris and Alfie Robinson. Brad Pearce and Brandon Edwards both miss out through suspension. Rhydymwyn have snapped up Connah's Quay Town duo Will Leonard and Joel Griffiths ahead of their trip to Conwy Borough while Greenfield boss Scott Beck has signed four players as they make the short trip to Rhuddlan Town. 'We have signed four new players, Aaron Dowsett, Connor Davies, Kieron Day and Matt Gilsenan, and are hoping to get another two or three in over the next few weeks,' he said. 'We have underachieved for a few seasons now, so hopefully with the signings we've added we can improve and be in contention once the league starts.' Penyffordd Lions host Knighton Town and Broughton United will look to continue their brilliant introduction to senior football by beating visitors Penrhyndeudraeth. Saltney Town and Hawarden Rangers will also be looking to make home advantage count in their ties against Holyhead Town and Llanilar. Rhostyllen will be favourites to dispose of Deeside Dragons while FC Queen's Park entertain Mynydd Llandegai. Arran 'Taz' Taylor is Park's new boss and he said: 'We come into the season off the back of a successful pre-season, the lads have trained hard and we have bolstered our squad with the two great signings of Jordan Williams and Ryan Kershaw, both experienced players and bring a lot to the club.' There are testing trips for Penycae and Castell Alun, who go to Kerry and St Asaph City respectively, while Sychdyn United host Abermule.
