Aaron Ekblad addresses criticism of first-round elbow: ‘Reasonable response'
Speaking to reporters in Tampa last week, Hagel questioned Ekblad's motives on a play where he was concussed by a forceful forearm to the face while playing the puck along the boards.
'Purposefully going for someone's head, it's just as bad as it gets,' he said.

Ekblad was suspended two games for elbowing despite not being penalized on the ice during the April 28 game. Adding insult to injury, he scored the winning goal in that Game 4 after effectively ending Hagel's season.
Prior to returning to Florida's lineup for Wednesday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ekblad addressed the incident for the first time. He classified it as a good hit gone bad.
'Going down the wall there, I'm trying to make a hit every single time I do that,' Ekblad said. 'I do that all season. I was aiming for his chest and I caught him in the chin, and that's unfortunate, but it's not my intention. I'm never out to hurt anybody on the ice. It's unfortunate the way that the outcome happened, but it is what it is.
'We all move on.'
Hagel had received his own one-game suspension earlier in the series for levelling Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov when he hadn't touched the puck. He told reporters that he understood why Florida would have sought retribution following that incident, but indicated that he would have preferred to be challenged to a fight rather than getting taken out with a dirty hit.
'Any 20 of you guys,' Hagel said. 'I could care less, I'm a pretty honest player, I would have answered the bell. If he would have said 'Let's fight,' I don't care if I would have got my ass kicked.'
Hagel was particularly disappointed that the elbow came from Ekblad, who hadn't previously been suspended during an 800-game NHL career and has dealt with concussion issues of his own.
'I thought that (he was trying to injure me), which sucked because I could have played with a broken arm, I could have played with a bad knee, I could have played with a bad foot or you go down the list,' Hagel said. 'You only have one brain.'
On Wednesday morning, Ekblad declined to reveal if he had made any attempts to clear the air with Hagel.
Asked what he made of the public comments from the Lightning forward, he replied: 'Reasonable response. If that's how he feels, then we move on.'
It's been a difficult few months for the 29-year-old Panthers defenseman, who has only played two games since March 8. Two days after that, he received a 20-game suspension for violating the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program.
Ekblad said that he mistakenly ingested a banned substance while taking something designed to help his recovery from injury without first checking with the proper medical and team personnel.
He was two games into his return from that ban when the Hagel hit happened.
A top-pairing defender alongside Gustav Forsling, Ekblad's return for Game 2 of the second-round series with Toronto was highly anticipated by Panthers coach Paul Maurice. With him in the lineup, Seth Jones can play on the second pairing and give them a more formidable look in the top four.
'He's a big part of what we do,' Maurice said. '(His absence came when) you're looking towards the end of the year to build that group as a feel. We get Seth in and Aaron's still on our team and then we have a block of four games with three shutouts and a 2-1 win against Tampa at home, everybody's pretty excited about the way we look, right? Then we can't find him.
'He gets the ankle bracelet put him on and we don't get him back. We're just getting to learn what we look like with everybody in.'

LSU football injury update: Kelly talks status of transfer cornerback Ja'Keem Jackson
LSU football head coach Brian Kelly gave an update on the injury status of cornerback Ja'Keem Jackson during fall camp. 'He had a slight hamstring, probably a grade one," Kelly said. "So we wanted to be certain that when we brought him back in that we didn't have any reoccurrences.' Holding Jackson out of practice at this point seems precautionary. Ahead of a crucial year for the junior, the Tigers are ensuring he's at full strength before he returns to full speed work and preparations for the week one game at Clemson. Jackson joined LSU as part of the nation's highest-ranked transfer portal class in 2025. His decision to come to Baton Rouge marked a reunion with defensive back coach Corey Raymond, who coached Jackson at Florida. Through two seasons with the Gators, Jackson played 13 games with 11 tackles, four pass breakups and one quarterback hurry. He started the season opener last year but suffered a season-ending ankle injury just two games in. According to the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings, Jackson was the No. 11-ranked cornerback in the signing class. Jackson will certainly be a part of LSU's cornerback rotation, which has improved depth in 2025 and should be the best secondary of the Brian Kelly era.

Columbus Crew lose another lead, tie Toronto FC: Takeaways
The Crew went into the final 15 minutes of regulation with a one-goal lead against Toronto FC but failed to secure a victory, recording a 1-1 tie in their road matchup on Aug. 16. Over the past month, the Crew have struggled to maintain leads in the final 20 minutes of games. A loss to Orlando City and regulation draw against Toluca FC were matchups in which they had the upper hand. Columbus pulled ahead in the eighth minute against Toronto when forward Diego Rossi scored a team-leading 13th goal of the regular season. Replay: Columbus Crew drop advantage in second half, draw vs Toronto FC In the second half, the Crew held Toronto to one shot until a sequence in the 77th minute that began with a Toronto corner kick. Toronto took two shots following the corner before the Crew cleaned the ball out of their box, but the clearance allowed Toronto to reset and create a goal by forward Jules-Anthony Vilsaint. "It's frustrating," Crew defender Sean Zawadzki said. "Obviously, it's a set piece. We come out, and we try and set up our line, and I think we maybe lose a runner. It's a debate (if Vilsaint was) offside, not offside, who knows. It's the way things go in this league." The Crew had several opportunities to regain the lead, specifically during the eight minutes of second-half stoppage time in which they took four shots compared to Toronto's one. Three of those shots were on target, with two being saved by goalkeeper Sean Johnson and the final blocked by defender Kevin Long. While there has been a pattern of the Crew dropping leads late in games, coach Wilfried Nancy believes the Toronto result was different from the others. "The game was weird," Nancy said. "The pace of the game was not so high. The grass was high, so it was not easy. The game was a bit slow, I don't know, it was a weird feeling. I told the players I don't know if we did a good game or bad game. ... For me, there is no correlation between the other games. This is this game, this is totally different." Daniel Gazdag continues to struggle to find second goal with Columbus Crew after offside call vs Toronto FC Two minutes after Vilsaint scored, Crew midfielder Daniel Gazdag found the back of the net with a one-touch shot off a cross pass from midfielder Max Arfsten. The Crew's celebration was cut short when a VAR review determined that Gazdag was offside. "For me, this is about trying to see what we could have done better," Nancy said. "Individually, Daniel knows if he did a good game or not. This is football, this is not an issue for Daniel. He'll be back to score another goal." If the goal had held, it would have marked Gazdag's second since joining the Crew in April, with his loan goal across 18 appearances coming on a penalty kick against D.C. United on July 29. Before being traded from the Philadelphia Union, Gazdag scored two goals across six games. Darlington Nagbe misses Toronto FC matchup due to torso injury The Crew were without starting midfielder Darlington Nagbe, with the 35-year-old being sidelined with a torso injury. Nancy said Nagbe suffered the injury during the Leagues Cup group-stage game against Club Leon on Aug. 5, and his timeline to return is undetermined. "When they didn't go for the ball, they went to hurt him," Nancy said. "This is what they did. He's going to be out for a few days. We'll see when he's able to come back." The Crew continue their final stretch of regular-season matchups against Atlanta United on Aug. 23 at Field. bmackay@ @brimackay15 This article originally appeared on The Columbus Dispatch: Columbus Crew drop lead, tie Toronto FC on the road: Takeaways
