Doctor pleads guilty to supplying ketamine to Friends star Matthew Perry
US-Canadian actor Matthew Perry had a lengthy struggle with substance addiction before his death in 2023.
LOS ANGELES - A California doctor charged in the 2023 overdose death of Friends star Matthew Perry pleaded guilty on July 23 to four counts of illegal distribution of the prescription anesthetic ketamine.
Doctor Salvador Plasencia, one of five people charged in
the death of Perry at age 54, entered the plea in US District Court in Los Angeles.
He faces up to 40 years in prison when sentenced, prosecutors said.
Ketamine is a short-acting anesthetic with hallucinogenic properties. It is sometimes prescribed to treat depression and anxiety but is also abused by recreational users.
In a plea agreement with prosecutors, Plasencia admitted injecting Perry with ketamine at the actor's home and in a Santa Monica parking lot in the weeks before his death on Oct 28, 2023, and that doing so was not for legitimate medical purposes.
Plasencia, who operated an urgent care clinic, obtained the ketamine from another doctor,
Mark Chavez of San Diego.
According to court filings, Plasencia texted Chavez about Perry, writing, 'I wonder how much this moron will pay.'

Chavez and two other co-defendants already have pleaded guilty in the case. None has yet been sentenced.
A fifth defendant, Jasveen Sangha, whom authorities said was
a drug dealer known to customers as the 'ketamine queen', has been charged with supplying the dose that killed Perry.
She has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to go on trial in August.
Perry had publicly acknowledged decades of substance abuse, including during the years he starred as Chandler Bing on the hit 1990s television sitcom Friends. REUTERS

MADRID - Spanish police said on Sunday they were investigating a 17-year-old on suspicion of using artificial intelligence to deepfake nude images of female classmates for sale. Sixteen young women at an educational institute in Valencia, in southeastern Spain, complained about the AI-generated images of them which were circulating on social media and online. In December, a teenage girl complained to police that AI-generated video and faked photos resembling her "completely naked" were posted on a social media account started under her name. A 17-year-old boy is under investigation for alleged corruption of minors. The Spanish government said in March said it would put forward a law to treat such deepfaked sexual imagery created by AI without consent as a crime but the bill has so far not been passed by parliament. In September 2023, Spain was shocked when 15 minors in Extremadura, in southwest Spain, were investigated for using AI to produce fake naked images of their female schoolmates. The assault in Komanda, a city in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, is believed to have been carried out by ADF rebels, wielding guns and machetes, officials told Reuters. Jean Kato, an official in the city administration, said worshippers were taking part in a night mass when the rebels stormed the church in the early hours of Sunday morning. Thirty-eight people were dead, 15 injured and several others were still missing, officials said. Christophe Munyanderu, a human rights activist present at the scene in Komanda, said shots were heard overnight but people at first thought it was thieves.
