King Charles to lead commemorations to mark 80th anniversary of VJ Day
LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - King Charles will lead British commemorations on Friday for the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, which marks victory over Japan and the end of World War Two, with famous buildings across the country lit up to mark the occasion. While fighting in Europe ended in May 1945, the conflict with Japan continued until it signalled its intention to surrender on August 15 that year after atom bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States. Charles will be joined by his wife Queen Camilla, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the Japanese ambassador and veterans for a National Service of Remembrance to pay tribute to those who were killed in the final three months of the war. There will be a flypast featuring historic military planes and a two-minute silence at midday. "Eighty years since our victory in the Second World War, we pay our respects to the many who fought, were captured, and made the ultimate sacrifice in the Far East," Starmer said in a statement. "Our country owes a great debt to those who fought for a better future, so we could have the freedoms and the life we enjoy today." At dawn military bagpipers will perform at The Cenotaph war memorial in central London, at Edinburgh Castle and the National Memorial Arboretum in central England where the service of remembrance will be held later, the government said. A piper will also perform at a Japanese peace garden to recognise the reconciliation between Britain and Japan in the decades since the war ended. On Friday evening, dozens of buildings and locations across the country including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, and the White Cliffs of Dover will be illuminated to mark the anniversary.

THE UK's nosiest neighbourhoods have been revealed, with a few surprising contenders nabbing top spots. A study saw 2,418 adults across cities throughout Britain and Northern Ireland scored and ranked on their curtain twitching tendencies. 2 2 It revealed Belfast, Worcester, and Brighton are home to the UK's nosiest neighbours. And the Northern Irish capital scored highest overall - ahead of Worcester, which came second, and Brighton and Hove, which came third. They were evaluated in six categories, including how often they look out their windows to observe their neighbours. Other considerations included how many neighbours they follow on social media, how many claim to know everyone on their street, and how many are members of neighbourhood WhatsApp groups. How many consider themselves to be nosy also informed the overall score, as did how many also think those living nearby are "curious". Commissioned by Škoda, the study found 35 per cent consider themselves to be nosy. Spokesperson Kirsten Stagg said: "Nosiness is practically a national sport in Britain. "Whether it's a new car on the driveway or a new family moving in, we can't help but take a peek. "Being a nosy neighbour isn't just harmless fun - it helps build safer, more connected communities and even sparks conversations, especially around new technology like electric cars." Out of everyone polled, it emerged the most common time for observing the neighbours is between 6pm and 8pm. DIY Privacy Fences: Affordable Garden Solutions And although nosiness is often considered to be a negative trait, it isn't necessarily a bad thing – 47 per cent believe being a nosy neighbour is harmless. While 34 per cent reckon it's a good thing, because it's helpful in cases of emergency, and helps keep the neighbourhood safe. With 35 per cent of the opinion it builds a stronger sense of community. The study also found through observation alone those polled have learnt very specific details about those living close by. These include what they do for a living, the time they leave for work, and where they shop based on their bags. They've also noticed deliveries being made, their workout schedule, and a new car on the driveway. Almost half know the make, 35 per cent the model, and 15 per cent can even recall the registration. The landmark cooling towers at Cottam Power Station were demolished in a special operation on Thursday (14 August). Contractors say the flattening of the eight structures is the largest simultaneous demolition of cooling towers ever carried out. The coal-fired complex, which opened in 1968 and was capable of generating electricity for around 3.7 million homes, closed for good in 2019.
