Vivienne Westwood Limited Responds to Artists' Legal Complaint
In a court filing, Vivienne Westwood Limited has responded to the legal complaint made by three street artists that claim the designer label and Farfetch sold apparel imprinted with their artwork. Earlier this year, the graffiti specialists' complaint claimed that the British designer's company 'inexplicably, and without notice, let alone consent, prominently splashed the artists' work across their apparel in a transparent effort to lend credibility and an aura of urban cool to their apparel by co-opting the plaintiffs' special combination of graffiti style and street art.' The artists are seeking a juried trial and an unspecified amount in damages. More from WWD LeRoy Neiman's Fashion Illustrations to Be Focus of Kent State University Museum Show On This Oxford Campus, the Boys Dress With Character Fendi Opens Permanent Footwear Space at Harrods In Westwood's 14-page response, which was submitted Wednesday in the U.S. District Court in the Central District of California, Vivienne Westwood Limited, Latimo SA (an Italian arm of the company) and Vivienne Westwood Srl said they lack sufficient information to admit or deny the allegations and, therefore, those allegations are denied. The Vivienne Westwood defendants deny that they have committed any acts that violate any law. The parties noted that the apparel in question does not contain any copyright management information that is protected under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The legal battle is based on the outdoor street art that the artists claim was used by Westwood's company without their permission. Jeffrey Gluck, an attorney for the three artists, said Friday that the response was 'especially disappointing coming from Vivienne Westwood, who has built an entire brand and aesthetic on the backs of countercultures and rebels. To now allegedly threaten to erode the legal protection for an entire community of artists, instead of simply paying them for using their artwork, is pathetic,' Gluck said. 'The global graffiti community is not new to this fight, and they will stand up for their rights now just as they always have in the face of unjust corporate exploitation.' Gluck suggested that a fashion label had not made a similar defense since years-old copyright dispute between the street artist Revok and H&M over one of the Swedish conglomerate's advertising campaigns. In 2018, a settlement was reportedly reached that included H&M agreeing to fund a handful of Detroit art institutions and charities. Outside Bites brings new flavor to Sacramento's J Street with food pop-up
It's opening night at a new outdoor food pop-up event in midtown Sacramento, featuring everything from wood-fired pizzas and BBQ burgers to fresh fruit frescas. A two-alarm fire in 2017 burned down an auto shop that was once located at the busy corner of 17th and J streets, and it's sat fenced off and vacant ever since. Now, it's the location of a new pop-up food tent and truck event called Outside Bites. Organizer Casey Mann said the event will be held there every Friday and Saturday night from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Mann says it helps show off the diversity of farm-to-fork food in the region. "Sacramento's food scene as a whole is incredible and underappreciated, and that goes straight down to all the local vendors we have here," Mann said. The event features about 18 food vendors, which will rotate each month, and it gives upstart micro-businesses like I Heart Burgers a chance to build a foodie fan base. "It definitely allows us to get our name out there because it's a lower start-up cost," said Erica Smith with I Heart Burgers. "I want to build my brand first." "I don't think you need a restaurant to make great food, and I think that all these vendors out here deserve the same opportunities and recognition," Mann said. From the flames of a burned-down business to a sizzling new place to eat, this high-profile spot on J Street is already helping bring back the crowds. "We saw all these food trucks and we wanted to see what it was all about, and it's been amazing," said customer Amber Solsa. There's no admission fee to attend the pop-up event, and there are tables in the shade and portable restrooms on site.

Milhaus opens railway-inspired apartments near Oklahoma City

Property: Oxlley Apartments Developers: Milhaus, Humphreys Capital Architect: Hufft Architects Location: Edmond, Oklahoma Units: 276 Rents: $1,225-$2,320 Cost: Withheld Shop Top Mortgage Rates Personalized rates in minutes A quicker path to financial freedom Your Path to Homeownership Nearly a decade after it opened its first project in Oklahoma City, Indianapolis-based developer Milhaus has returned with a 276-unit, garden-style property in nearby Edmond, Oklahoma, according to a press release shared with Multifamily Dive. The newly opened Oxlley Apartments, co-developed with Oklahoma City-based investor Humphreys Capital, is located in Edmond's historic downtown, offering close proximity to schools, universities, hospitals and major employers in the area. Its design is inspired by Edmond's industrial origins as a coal and water stop on the Santa Fe Railroad, according to Milhaus. These details include industrial-inspired fixtures and fluted accent walls, combined with modern geometries and bright white color palettes. The property's parking garage also features a five-story mural titled 'Prairie Crossing' by local artists Hayley Owen and Jesse Owen, depicting local wildlife. 'By blending Edmond's rich past with contemporary style, we've crafted living spaces that honor the town's golden age,' said Kara Clayton, senior regional manager at Milhaus, in the release. Units at Oxlley range from studios to three-bedroom apartments, and offer open-concept floor plans, large kitchen islands, in-unit laundry and balconies or patios in each unit. Amenities include a pool, a 24-hour fitness studio, electric vehicle charging stations, conference rooms, a dog park and a pet spa. The site is located across the street from West Hurd Park, providing green space and outdoor activity opportunities, and within walking distance of local restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. With a median single-family home listing price of $435,000 as of December 2024 — an 8.8% year-over-year increase — the Edmond housing market is increasingly competitive as its population continues to grow, according to Milhaus. The company said Oxlley will bring another housing option to the area. 'The city's continued growth and revitalization make it the perfect time and place for a thoughtfully designed community like Oxlley to thrive,' Todd Glass, head of real estate investing at Humphreys Capital, said in the release.
