Tharoor to be kept away from all Congress events in Thiruvananthapuram: Muraleedharan
Shashi Tharoor
's relationship with his own party remains uncertain, senior Congress leader K Muraleedharan has said the party has decided to keep the Thiruvananthapuram MP away from its functions in the state capital, from where Tharoor was elected for four consecutive terms.
"It is up to the party high command to decide whether to take action against him or not. But we have decided that he should be kept away from all the party functions in Thiruvananthapuram," said Muraleedharan. In response, Tharoor said he had "nothing to comment".
The state leadership has been distancing itself from Tharoor ever since he started defying the AICC leadership's directive. Despite his criticisms against former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi on the incidents that occurred during the Emergency, AICC has not responded strongly against him yet.
It is at this juncture that the state leaders of the party have declared an "unofficial" ban on Tharoor for the party functions. He was not even invited for the campaigning for the Nilambur by-election last month.

India cannot remain ‘mute spectator' as institutions like WTO are destroyed by Trump: Congress
The Congress on Friday said that India 'cannot remain a mute spectator and be content with coining slogans and acronyms,' while the Donald Trump-led United States administration destroys international institutions like the World Trade Organization. 'The rules-based, multilateral trading system put in place with the US itself playing a leadership role has been finished off,' Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X. 'The US's approach now is to negotiate – if at all – bilaterally but finally decide unilaterally.' He further accused Trump of gutting the World Health Organization and highlighted that the US under Trump has withdrawn from the Paris Climate Agreement and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. 'India has the highest stakes in such international accords and institutions,' Ramesh asserted. The WTO had been dealt very heavy blows during Trump-I. It has been destroyed during Trump-II. The rules-based, multilateral trading system put in place with the US itself playing a leadership role has been finished off. The US's approach now is to negotiate--if at… — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) August 1, 2025 Ramesh's comments on Friday came after Trump signed an executive order reimposing so-called reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries that have not negotiated separate trade agreements with it, including India. On Wednesday, Trump announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from India. He added that India will also have to pay an unspecified ' penalty ' for buying a large portion of its military equipment and fuel from Russia amid the war on Ukraine. While Friday was the deadline for the tariffs, they will come into effect only from August 7. On Thursday, Trump said that he does not care about 'what India does with Russia' and that 'they can take their dead economies down together, for all I care'. 'We have done very little business with India, their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world,' Trump said on social media. 'Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together.' The tariffs have led to concerns of a broader trade war that could disrupt the global economy and trigger recession. The World Trade Organization was established in 1995 with the aim to reduce barriers to global trade and encourage a sustainable model of development. It sets rules for global trade and arbitrates disputes when countries contend that the rules are not being followed. However, since Trump announced his tariffs, critics have questioned the effectiveness of the Geneva-based organisation in regulating international trade.

HC Rejects Kangana Ranaut's Plea Against Defamation Case Over Remark On Farmers' Protest
The Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed Kangana Ranaut's plea to throw out a defamation case filed by Mahinder Kau over her tweet on the farmers' protest. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed the plea filed by actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut after a defamation case was filed against her over her recent remark on the farmers' protest. Kangana Ranaut had applied in court and asked for the complaint against her to be thrown out, but reportedly, the High Court has dismissed her plea. As per a report in The Times of India, the High Court stated, 'There are specific allegations against the petitioner, who is a celebrity, that false and defamatory imputations by her in the retweet have dented the respondent's reputation and lowered her in her own estimation, as also in the eyes of others. Therefore, filing of the complaint to vindicate her rights cannot be termed mala fide." To simplify, the High Court shared that the celebrity's retweet allegedly defamed the respondent, so her complaint is valid and not made with bad intent. A defamation case was filed against Kangana Ranaut by 73-year-old Mahinder Kau from Bathinda after the actress, in a now-deleted tweet, wrongly identified her as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame and claimed that such women protest for ₹100. In 2022, a local court summoned Kangana, and she moved to the Punjab & Haryana High Court. However, her plea was rejected, and she now has to face trial in Punjab.
