Southern California DMVs prepare for last-minute Real ID rush as deadline approaches
Darran Matthews hoped to speed up getting his Real ID by doing the paperwork online.
Department of Motor Vehicles across Southern California will see an increase in last-minute Real ID applications as the deadline approaches.

"Filled out all the information you have to provide… put that in and I still have to come down to the DMV," Matthews said.
The DMV extended most office hours this past month, knowing many people had put off becoming compliant and are up against that May 7 deadline.
"We're just going to walk up, I know it takes a little longer, but hopefully it won't be that long," said a man helping his mom get her Real ID in Van Nuys.
People with valid passports will still be able to use them to get through TSA checkpoints and into federal buildings. Some forms of government ID will work too, so some might want to hold off updating until it's renewal time or lines die down.
Over at the Hollywood Burbank Airport, leaders are bracing for longer lines and delays when the requirement kicks in Wednesday. Some travelers didn't need it to fly out, but will on their way back.
"I'm going on a work trip, and it's being instated when I come back," said Katie Clem.
TSA officers said they will initially use a secondary process to try and confirm the identity of flyers who do not have compliant IDs, but if they can't do so, they won't be able to fly. Local airport leaders stress that all travelers should expect to feel the impact of this change
Congress mandated more secure IDs 20 years ago in the wake of 9/11.
A Real ID can be identified by a gold or black star in the bear at the top corner of the card.
"Even if you do have your REAL ID plan to come to the airport early because there could be a trickle-down effect," said Mike Christensen with the Hollywood Burbank Airport.
Christensen said people should treat this week like a holiday travel period and arrive at least 90 minutes early. He also added that the airport will be staffed up for the next couple of weeks to help ease the transition.
Before going to the DMV in-person you should check the website and ensure you have all the proper documents needed.

Preservation of covered bridges in western Pennsylvania is labor of love
If you think about rural America, one image that may crop up no matter where you are in the country is that of a covered bridge. Usually built from the very timber that surrounded them, covered bridges have gone from once a vital throughway of the hinterlands to now a symbol of our nation's transportation past. "Pennsylvania has the most covered bridges of any state in the country," said Christopher Marston, an architect and covered bridge historian based in Washington, D.C. "There were once as many as 10,000 covered bridges around, mostly built in the 19th century, but there are still 800 remaining historic covered bridges around the county and over 200 of those are in Pennsylvania." Marston was part of the National Covered Bridges Recording Project, which from 2002 to 2019 was undertaken by the Historic American Engineering Record and the Federal Highway Administration's Office of Infrastructure Research and Development to study covered bridges in the U.S. The project helped document remaining bridges around the country, as well as designate several bridges as national historic landmarks, make recommendations for their preservation and give funding to covered bridge states to help keep this unique part of American history standing proudly for all to see. Marston says these bridges went up quickly. They were cheaper to build than their stone and brick counterparts, and their roofs and walls ensured that their wood would be protected from the elements. The coverings had another purpose, though. They also helped shield people from the praying eyes of their neighbors. "They are sometimes referred to as 'kissing bridges' because in their heyday, they gained somewhat a romantic appeal," said Jacob Miller, the executive director of the Somerset County Historical Society. "It was a place for young couples, when they drove over it, they could take a minute to sneak a kiss or sneak a hug while they crossed into the relative privacy of the bridge." Of the 200 covered bridges left in Pennsylvania, some 50 still stand in western Pennsylvania, and 10 of those bridges still call Somerset County home. Miller says that preservation work on these bridges is a labor of love for places like Somerset, and he hopes that their bridges and all of western Pennsylvania's covered bridges will continue to be a bridge for both the past and the present. "I hope that [people] can walk in somebody else's shoes," said Miller. "And walk in the path of the past and think about where they would be if they lived at that time period." FAA Proposes Extending Newark Flight Restrictions Through 2026
The US Federal Aviation Administration proposed extending flight reductions at Newark Liberty International Airport through October 2026, while also slightly raising the current limit. The regulator sought public comment on its plan in a notice filed Friday. It said continued reductions are needed as the agency deals with an air traffic controller staffing crunch at a Philadelphia facility that guides planes in and out of the busy New York-area hub.
