A high school Oregon track star somersaulted her way through the state championship finish line last week.
Brooklyn Anderson, a junior at Thurston High School, turned heads during her somersault finish in the girls' 100-meter hurdles at the Oregon State Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on May 30. To much surprise, Anderson tumbled in at first place. Thurston High School is located in Springfield, Oregon, about 120 miles south of Portland.
Footage captured by the National Federation of State High School Associations shows Anderson, who was already ahead in the race, tripping and performing a double somersault across the finish line. She won the race with a final time of 14.93 seconds. The second-place runner, Maisy Scanlan from Wilsonville High School, came in at 15.15 seconds, according to the Oregon School Activities Association.
"All I remember is resorting back to my gymnastics career and just somersaulting over that line," Anderson told The Oregonian after her race. "I wasn't sure how far back everybody else was behind me, so I knew to just keep rolling, to keep going, because I really wanted to get first."
Celebrating the win, Anderson shared a photo and video of her somersault finish on Instagram.
"Wow, what a memorable season," Anderson wrote in the Instagram post. "Year 3 is one for the books. Thank you everybody for the support, and especially thank you to the most amazing heat of girls a girl could finish a race with. You guys are awesome. GO COLTS #jryear #somersault #track #100mhurdles."
The 500-meter hurdles weren't the only event Anderson competed in. She also placed fourth in the girls' 100-meter race, third in girls' long jump and 10th in the girls' 4-by-100-meter relay, per the Oregon School Activities Association.

Edinburgh woman runs hundreds of miles in mere days amid world record attempt
An Edinburgh woman is currently undertaking an incredible attempt to set a world record in ultra-marathon running. Sara Eydmann, 29, is an ultra runner who is trying to set the fastest known time (FKT) running the North Coast 500, a scenic driving route around the north coast of Scotland. When she began her journey, Sara aimed not only to be the first woman ever to complete the 516-mile route but also to beat the previous world record set by a man. READ MORE: Excited Edinburgh couple take on new venture to transform community pub READ MORE: Iconic Edinburgh 'banana flats' bursts into flames as residents evacuated The current record sits at a daunting five days and 23 hours. At the start of her journey, Sara aimed to run roughly 20 hours per day with three hours of sleep. Sara set off on Wednesday, June 4. Sara's first day saw her complete a staggering 99 miles after she ran through the night from Inverness to Shieldaig. Footage shows Sara in high-vis gear and a headlamp running along the pitch-black highland road. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sara Eydmann (@saraeydmann) A day two update on Sara's Instagram had her 180 miles (290 km) into the trip at Gairloch. Four days into the attempt, she has run over 250 miles (400km). On day three, Sara announced the attempt was "not going to plan" but she was adjusting expectations and that she was "okay with that". She said: "Not quite feeling up to plan but we are adjusting and rearranging the plan. There have been some very low lows today. Just going to keep moving. One foot in front of the other is all I can do. This is really really hard." The team battled tough weather during its first few days, but day four brought sunny skies and higher spirits. "If you live in the North of Scotland, come and cheer Sara on, it means the world to her. So grateful for all of your support, it keeps her going." Video footage showed a pair of supporters on the side of the road cheering Sara on. One can be heard saying, "We're very impressed". In February, Sara - who was diagnosed with autism at age 27 - told Edinburgh Live she is running to break down barriers for neurodiverse people. She said: "I want to show people not to judge me by a label. If you meet me in life, you wouldn't think [I'm neurodiverse] at all. I've spent so much of my life masking and that's taken a toll on me. I've embraced that my special interest is running." In 2023, Sara won in the women's category for the Loch Ronnoch Marathon and the John Muir Way Nocturnal Ultra - a six-hour loop race in North Berwick. She also ran from Edinburgh to Glasgow in record time in 2024. Sara continues in her groundbreaking attempt to become the first documented woman ever to run the North Coast 500. Her team welcomes donations to her Just Giving page, which supports her world record attempt. If you would like to support the cause, you can do so here.

Goal drought: Tigers stumble, Swans finally fire at MCG
Sydney have strangled Richmond for a badly needed 44-point win, keeping the Tigers goal-less for more than a half at the MCG. The Swans' slogging 11.14 (80) to 4.12 (36) win in cold conditions on Saturday was only their third in 11 visits to the MCG, punctuated by two heavy grand final losses over the past three years. Sydney's record improves to 5-8, giving their season a glimmer of hope. After last weekend's last-quarter fadeout against GWS, Richmond started brightly and led by 12 points at quarter time. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sydney Swans (@sydneyswans) But the rebuilding Tigers did not kick a goal from 19 minutes in the first quarter until 22 minutes into the last - unofficially a club record. All-Australian defender Nick Blakey, derided this week by some in the media as one of the season's biggest disappointments, was outstanding with 34 disposals and eight inside 50s. Isaac Heeney starred in the midfield and James Jordon played his role to perfection as a defensive forward on in-form Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin, kicking three goals. Tigers onballer Dion Prestia was on fire in the first quarter with 13 possessions, but James Rowbottom then paid him more attention and he only had 21 for the game. Sydney ruckman Brodie Grundy also had a day out, beating Richmond captain Toby Nankervis in another crucial match-up for the Swans. Brodie Grundy keeps it alive and kicks a ripper 🔥#AFLTigersSwans — AFL (@AFL) June 7, 2025 The longer the game went, the more apparent was Nankervis's frustration. Coming off big losses to Melbourne - at the MCG - and Adelaide at home, the Swans were in big trouble early. Richmond had 10 of the first 12 inside 50s and it was 10-4 at quarter time, with the tackle count also a lopsided 11-6 in the Tigers' favour. But Sydney made the game a scrap at the start of the second term and Heeney kicked a goal at 13 minutes to give them the lead. The Swans led by 14 points at the main break and they kicked 10 unanswered goals until Seth Campbell put through his second late in the final term.
