Watch Oregon high school track star somersault over finish line, win first place
A high school Oregon track star somersaulted her way through the state championship finish line last week.
Brooklyn Anderson, a junior at Thurston High School, turned heads during her somersault finish in the girls' 100-meter hurdles at the Oregon State Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on May 30. To much surprise, Anderson tumbled in at first place. Thurston High School is located in Springfield, Oregon, about 120 miles south of Portland.
Footage captured by the National Federation of State High School Associations shows Anderson, who was already ahead in the race, tripping and performing a double somersault across the finish line. She won the race with a final time of 14.93 seconds. The second-place runner, Maisy Scanlan from Wilsonville High School, came in at 15.15 seconds, according to the Oregon School Activities Association.
"All I remember is resorting back to my gymnastics career and just somersaulting over that line," Anderson told The Oregonian after her race. "I wasn't sure how far back everybody else was behind me, so I knew to just keep rolling, to keep going, because I really wanted to get first."
Celebrating the win, Anderson shared a photo and video of her somersault finish on Instagram.
"Wow, what a memorable season," Anderson wrote in the Instagram post. "Year 3 is one for the books. Thank you everybody for the support, and especially thank you to the most amazing heat of girls a girl could finish a race with. You guys are awesome. GO COLTS #jryear #somersault #track #100mhurdles."
The 500-meter hurdles weren't the only event Anderson competed in. She also placed fourth in the girls' 100-meter race, third in girls' long jump and 10th in the girls' 4-by-100-meter relay, per the Oregon School Activities Association.

Sara Eydmann, 29, is an ultra runner who is trying to set the fastest known time (FKT) running the North Coast 500, a scenic driving route around the north coast of Scotland. Sara's first day saw her complete a staggering 99 miles after she ran through the night from Inverness to Shieldaig. Four days into the attempt, she has run over 250 miles (400km). On day three, Sara announced the attempt was "not going to plan" but she was adjusting expectations and that she was "okay with that". She said: "Not quite feeling up to plan but we are adjusting and rearranging the plan. There have been some very low lows today. Just going to keep moving. One foot in front of the other is all I can do. This is really really hard." The team battled tough weather during its first few days, but day four brought sunny skies and higher spirits. In February, Sara - who was diagnosed with autism at age 27 - told Edinburgh Live she is running to break down barriers for neurodiverse people. She said: "I want to show people not to judge me by a label. If you meet me in life, you wouldn't think [I'm neurodiverse] at all. I've spent so much of my life masking and that's taken a toll on me. I've embraced that my special interest is running." In 2023, Sara won in the women's category for the Loch Ronnoch Marathon and the John Muir Way Nocturnal Ultra - a six-hour loop race in North Berwick. She also ran from Edinburgh to Glasgow in record time in 2024. Sara continues in her groundbreaking attempt to become the first documented woman ever to run the North Coast 500. Sydney have strangled Richmond for a badly needed 44-point win, keeping the Tigers goal-less for more than a half at the MCG. The Swans' slogging 11.14 (80) to 4.12 (36) win in cold conditions on Saturday was only their third in 11 visits to the MCG, punctuated by two heavy grand final losses over the past three years.
