Alexa+ just spoiled my kid's birthday — here's what happened

Tom's Guide4 days ago
While making dinner last night, I noticed Alexa+ flashed an item in my cart across the screen. I didn't think anything of it, and actually appreciated the reminder to get moving on the purchase. It had done that before, especially with my "Buy Again?" items that I frequented orderd. But when my 10-year-old unassumingly prompted Alexa+ to "Show recent orders," I stood horrified as all the presents I hoped to give him in a few weeks flashed on the screen.
The cheerful, humanlike voice began reading off all my recent Amazon orders — including every single gift I'd carefully hidden for his birthday. He froze. I panicked. And just like that, the surprise was ruined.
We use Alexa+ daily in our house. It's our kitchen timer, trivia partner, and morning DJ.
But I hadn't realized that Alexa+ would so easily share my entire shopping history just because someone asked. No password or special code required.
My son didn't mean to spoil his birthday. But Alexa gave him a complete rundown of everything I'd ordered, including the exact Ronoldo jersey he'd been asking for since June.
Alexa+ is great at being helpful. But in a household with kids, that helpfulness can quickly become a privacy hazard. Right now, Alexa doesn't distinguish between who's asking, and it will gladly share your shopping, calendar events and reminders out loud, to anyone.
It even communicates effortlessly with my four-year-old who adorably fumbles over certain words like his favorite color, "'lello." That means, kids can accidentally uncover gifts or surprises and shared devices can blurt out private or personal info. Anyone in the room can ask for your order history.

If you use Alexa+ in a shared household, take these steps to keep your gifts, plans and private purchases under wraps:
I still like using Alexa+. To be clear, it was just doing what it was supposed to do as an AI assistant. However, this was a wakeup call, for sure. I've learned it needs some firm boundaries in a house with kids.
Until Alexa can tell the difference between a curious child and a parent planning a surprise, it's on us to keep those secrets safe. My advice is if you're planning gifts, parties or holiday surprises, don't skip this setting, unless you want Alexa to do the unboxing early.

Big Tech's next major political battle may already be brewing in your backyard

Tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft are counting on data centers to power their AI expansions — and the U.S. already has more of these facilities than any other country. President Donald Trump has vowed to 'win the AI race,' moving to implement a Biden-era executive order to build the facilities on federal lands and announcing a $500 billion AI and data center sprint with large tech companies known as Stargate, with a site underway in Texas. But the surge is proving polarizing, particularly in northern Virginia — considered the tip of the spear on this issue with the world's largest and fastest-growing data center market. The Energy Department is projecting data centers will require up to nearly three times as much energy by 2028, raising fears that the tech sector will turn to polluting sources like coal and natural gas in their rush for power. The data center industry is expected to contribute $9.1 billion in gross domestic product to Virginia's economy annually. In Loudoun County, Virginia, that has meant a $250 million budget surplus and a property tax cut. That's a prospect that's hard to ignore for counties with Big Tech knocking on their doors. 'We don't know where to put the money,' said Democrat Juli Briskman, who sits on the county board of supervisors. But the typical residential ratepayer in that state could experience a $14 to $37 monthly electric bill increase by 2040, according to a report from Virginia's Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, in part because of the need for infrastructure upgrades whose costs could be spread to all customers. 'Enough is enough,' said Loudoun County Vice Chair Michael Turner, also a Democrat, who is largely opposing new data centers. 'The next election for supervisor will hinge on data centers,' adding that two weeks don't go by where he doesn't hear from other county officials around the country looking for advice. Data centers are seeping into this year's Virginia gubernatorial election, where Democratic nominee and former Rep. Abigail Spanberger is hoping to prevail. | AP In Arizona, Tucson's city council just unanimously voted against a massive data center proposal from Amazon that promised jobs and millions in tax revenue but stoked fears about its water and energy consumption. In other cases, public officials of both parties are rushing to capitalize on the promises of AI — and the tax dollars it can bring in.

Apple's most popular earbuds are down to a terrific low price on Amazon

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Some of the most popular earbuds in the business are the Apple AirPods 4, and now's a great time to pick up a pair as they are on sale at Amazon for only $99 (was $129). Apart from Black Friday and Prime Day, when they dropped to $89, this is the lowest price we've ever seen them. Owning a pair of the best earbuds is essential for experiencing top-level audio, whether you're at home or on the go. Being able to listen to your favorite music and receive phone calls without needing to remove those buds is an even bigger win. This deal is for the AirPods without ANC, but if that functionality is important to you, then the AirPods 4 with ANC are also discounted to $148.99 (was $179). Whichever model you choose, you know you get excellent audio quality, innovative features, and a slick design. Today's best Apple AirPods 4 deal The latest Apple AirPods are now the lowest price they've been outside of Black Friday and Prime Day, so chances are you'll have to wait until November for them to drop any further again. This is a great offer for Apple's latest earbuds, which serve up outstanding audio with spatial smarts that make it feel like sound is all around Deal You can read our Apple AirPods 4 with ANC review to get a clearer sense of how the buds perform, but if you'd like to know what our audio editor, Becky Scarrott, thinks of the non-ANC model, then check out her AirPods 4 opinion piece. The reality is that $99 is not going to get you a pair of the best earbuds around, but what you are getting is a seamless experience with your iPhone. Being able to grab them before you head out the door and know they'll just work is a big time-saver. Just keep in mind that if you're an Android user, you will lose out on all but the most basic features, so there are better options around for you. If you're an Apple device owner, then you might want to check out all the other AirPods deals around at the moment.
