LONDON — Petra Kvitova is returning to Wimbledon after the 2011 and 2014 champion was awarded a wild card Wednesday for this year's tournament.
Kvitova last played at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in 2023, and became a mother for the first time when her son was born during last year's Wimbledon tournament.
Kvitova made her return to the WTA Tour in Austin, Texas, in February after 17 months away from the court and is currently ranked 572nd.
Kvitova, from the Czech Republic, was the only non-British player to get a singles wild card to the main draw on Wednesday.
The other seven players with wild cards for the women's draw include British players Heather Watson, Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage, while Dan Evans is among seven British players given a wild card for the men's draw. One more men's wild card is due to be announced 'in due course,' organizers said.

New tennis, pickleball dome in west Edmonton expected to open by November

Work has started to erect a new air-supported dome that will host tennis and pickleball courts on Edmonton's west end. The facility is being built by Tennis Canada in the Johnny Bright Sports Park between Jasper Place and St. Francis Xavier high schools on 163 Street on the existing outdoor tennis courts. Ivan Quintero, the director of the IQ Tennis and Pickleball Centre, told CTV News Edmonton on Thursday the facility should be open by November. 'The weather in Edmonton is pretty rough during winter time,' Quintero told CTV News Edmonton on Thursday. 'There is a big need for facilities like this one.' The centre, which will cost between $4 million and $5 million to build, is slated to have six tennis courts and seven pickleball courts available to rent on a first-come, first-serve basis. No. 1 Jannik Sinner loses to Alexander Bublik in second round at Halle

HALLE, Germany (AP) — Top-ranked Jannik Sinner was upended by Alexander Bublik 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round at the Halle grass-court tournament Thursday. Sinner, the Halle defending champion, was playing in his first tournament since losing a five-set thriller to Carlos Alcaraz in the Roland-Garros final. The three-time Grand Slam champion had beaten Yannick Hanfmann in the first round this week, but the big-serving Bublik gained some revenge after having lost to Sinner in the quarterfinals in Paris. 'It's a special one — I had never beaten the top one (No. 1) in the world, that's an accomplishment,' Bublik, who is ranked 45th, said in his on-court interview. The Kazakhstan player recorded 36 winners and 15 aces against the top-seeded Sinner in the Wimbledon warmup tournament. 'I just kept serving, kept putting him in uncomfortable positions and it worked well,' said Bublik, the 2023 Halle champion who will face Tomas Machac in the quarterfinals. Also Thursday, the second-seeded Alexander Zverev outlasted Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) to reach the quarterfinals.
