Dale Earnhardt Jr. Isn't Done Thinking About His Dad's Legacy

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Isn't Done Thinking About His Dad's Legacy

New York Times17 hours ago

The interviews and footage that remain of Dale Earnhardt, the Hall of Fame NASCAR driver, paint a picture of an audacious, swaggering man who could charm and infuriate in the same moment. He was a superstar who reveled in villainy.
But it is an image of him away from the track that captivates Dale Earnhardt Jr.
It shows his father, most likely after a hunt, with his hands wrapped around a stag's horns. The animal's face rests against his dark jeans. He squints into the sunlight, wearing a Wrangler trucker hat. A T-shirt bearing the label of Jack Daniel's, the whiskey brand, peeks out from beneath a flannel shirt.
This photo, Mr. Earnhardt said, was quintessentially his dad.
The racetrack was where Dale Earnhardt won stock-car championships and millions of fans. It was also where he suffered injuries that killed him in 2001, when he crashed on the last lap of the Daytona 500. Away from the track he was ruggedly masculine, an outdoorsman. He was also often absent from the lives of his three oldest children.
The photo is fixed to a door in a saloon that the younger Mr. Earnhardt built on his property in Mooresville, N.C., about two decades ago, when he was a wildly popular racecar driver, too. Soon that saloon became a full-fledged Old West town, designed as a place where Mr. Earnhardt could party without leaving his house and being subjected to the harsh glare that fame invites. It has a hotel, a chapel and a jail with two cells. The whole thing looks like it's right out of 'The Andy Griffith Show.'
As Mr. Earnhardt grew older — he is now 50 — he stopped visiting the town so often. Then he got married and had two daughters, and the Old West town came back to life.

Waymo vehicles set on fire in downtown L.A, as protesters, police clash

As Los Angeles police struggled with another day of unrest in downtown L.A., several Waymo autonomous taxis were set on fire, sending black smoke billowing into the air. The dramatic images were captured during an afternoon of clashes between large groups who were protesting immigration raids by the Trump administration and L.A. police who were trying to maintain order. For some time, protesters blocked traffic on the 101 Freeway before California Highway Patrol officers slowly pushed them back. Police advised residents to avoid the the 101 Freeway through downtown L.A. Images of the Waymo cars on fire on Los Angeles Street were broadcast nationally as Los Angeles has become a flashpoint in the immigration debate. Tires were slashed, windows smashed, and anti-ICE messages spray-painted over the cars, which were parked in a row. Protesters swarmed around the vehicles, tearing the doors off and stomping on the windshields. One man with a mask over his face smashed car windows with a skateboard. Another appeared to use a makeshift flamethrower to set the interior of a car ablaze. Around 5:30 p.m., some people were seen throwing Lime electric scooters into the burning cars, while others stood back. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the vehicle blazes while the Los Angeles Police Department warned people to stay away from the area. "Burning lithium-ion batteries release toxic gases, including hydrogen fluoride, posing risks to responders and those nearby," said the LAPD in a statement. Waymo's fleet of electric, self-driving taxis has become a familiar sight on L.A. roads. A spokesperson for Waymo told The Times the company was in touch with law enforcement regarding the incident. After launching in San Francisco and Phoenix, Waymo began serving Los Angeles in November. It attracted an initial wait list of around 300,000 people before becoming available to anyone who downloaded the service's app, a company spokesperson said in January. As of January, Waymo had already driven 1.9 million miles in Los Angeles. Sign up for Essential California for news, features and recommendations from the L.A. George Clooney makes dramatic return to his signature silver fox status at 2025 Tony Awards

George Clooney was back to his silver fox status Sunday for the 2025 Tony Awards. Clooney, 64, showed off his natural gray hair while walking the red carpet with wife Amal Clooney at New York City's Radio City Musical Hall. Nominated for leading actor in a play for his role in "Good Night, and Good Luck," Clooney wrapped the play earlier in the afternoon and subsequently got right back to his roots. During an appearance on "Late Night with Seth Meyers," Clooney admitted the first thing he would do after his final show was fix his "bad" hair. The "Ocean's 11" actor ditched his signature silver hairstyle in favor of a dark brown dyed job for his role in the Tony-nominated play. "It's bad. It's still dark on top, but it's gray at the bottom," he told Meyers while wearing a hat to "hide" the growth. Clooney admitted he hadn't dyed his hair in two months, since the beginning of the production. "So you get that really nice-looking grow-out of gray," he said. Clooney promised Meyers on Monday that his hair would be back to normal by the time of the Tonys, even under a tight deadline. "The last show is Sunday. We do a matinee, and then by the time we go to the Tonys that night, it'll be gone," he said. Meyers joked that it looked like he was "trying to get away with something" as Clooney appeared on the show wearing a hat. "It really looks bad," Clooney said. "It looks like [I'm] going through some horrible midlife crisis. I'm 64 – midlife is a little stretch." While Clooney's role in the performance was the talk of the town Sunday, his family's status in the United States could be in jeopardy under the Trump administration. Amal, 47, reportedly gave legal advice in a war crimes case against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over the war in Gaza, according to the Financial Times. Trump's executive order claims the court "engaged in illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel. The ICC has, without a legitimate basis, asserted jurisdiction over and opened preliminary investigations concerning personnel of the United States and certain of its allies, including Israel, and has further abused its power by issuing baseless arrest warrants targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant. "The United States will impose tangible and significant consequences on those responsible for the ICC's transgressions, some of which may include the blocking of property and assets, as well as the suspension of entry into the United States of ICC officials, employees, and agents, as well as their immediate family members." Amal, born in Lebanon and raised in Britain, practices law in both England and the United States, and has lived all over the world. Clooney proposed to Amal in April 2014, and the couple married five months later in Venice, Italy. Three years later, in 2017, the Clooneys welcomed twins Alexander and Ella.
