Singaporeans flock to Johor for durian feasts
Malaysian locals and Singaporeans are seen choosing and buying durians at a stall near a mall in Johor Bahru.
JOHOR BAHRU - Two months after Singapore's general election, durian businesses in Johor are drawing a steady crowd of visitors from across the Causeway.
This post-election trend is a consistent revenue booster for the state, according to Johor Tourist Guides Association chairman Jimmy Leong.
'It is usual for Singaporeans to go on durian tours every year, but the number of groups goes up by about 30 per cent after an election in the island republic,' he said.
Mr Leong said these durian tours are a popular way for Singaporean Members of Parliament (MPs) to express gratitude to their communities and party members for their election support.
'Each group could comprise as many as eight to 10 buses,' Mr Leong added.
For instance, Jalan Kayu MP Ng Chee Meng recently promoted a 'Musang King durian tour to Johor Baru' on Facebook.
The $110 day tour included transport, an all-you-can-eat Musang King lunch, and an eight-course dinner.
'Back by popular demand! You asked and we listened, so let's go get some durians,' he wrote.
A Singaporean mother of three, Ms Nina Farah Ain Borhan, said she had seen such durian tours being organised by a Singapore political representative.
'There are posters displayed next to the lift lobby (of my residential building),' she said, adding that she had not participated in it.
'But I do travel to Johor myself frequently for durians,' said the 31-year-old.
Durian seller John Chew, 60, said the durian season began early in July , and since then, business has picked up significantly, especially over the weekends.
'Singaporeans make up about half of our customers,' said Mr Chew, who runs a stall near a mall in Johor .
He said that Musang King remains Singaporeans' top choice, although Malaysia has around 200 durian varieties.
'The prices vary depending on the grade. Grade A can go for RM60 per kilogramme, while grade B ranges from RM30 to RM40,' he said.
Durian seller Mohamad Amirudin Tono, 22, also reported brisk sales, particularly during weekends, with customers arriving from all over the country and Singapore.
'The price of the fruit has also been going down this season,' he said. 'This has helped attract more customers.'
A durian supplier in Pontian, who only wanted to be known as Mr Tok, said demand has been so high he sometimes needs to source from other suppliers to meet orders.
'I also have customers from Singapore arriving in tour buses to my orchard,' he said.
Singaporean Wendy Chua, 42, who was spotted enjoying durian at a stall in Johor , said: 'This is probably our second or third time eating durian here. There are some durian varieties available in Johor that are hard to find in Singapore, which makes the experience worthwhile.'
However, the rising prices over the years did not deter Singaporeans, she said.

We love our dogs and cats. But are they bad for the environment?

NEW YORK – Our dogs and cats provide all kinds of benefits. They improve physical health, reduce stress and can fend off loneliness. Research shows that interacting with pets can lower blood pressure. Dogs need walks and playtime, which helps people stay active. And both dogs and cats can form deep bonds with humans. Basically, they enrich people's lives. 'There's a whole body of literature supporting that,' said Mr Pieter De Frenne, a bioscience engineer at Ghent University in Belgium. Yet for all the good, pets come with environmental costs. Cats and dogs eat a lot of meat, for example. They also kill wildlife. So, how can you get all those tangible and intangible benefits and keep the environmental, um, pawprint, as low as possible? Here is what the experts have to say. A whole lot of meat Mr Gregory Okin, a geographer at University of California, Los Angeles, calculated in a 2017 study that the estimated 163 million cats and dogs in the United States consume a whopping quarter of the country's animal-derived calories. Globally, another study found that dry pet food was responsible for up to 2.9 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions from agriculture and 1.2 per cent of agricultural land use. Pets fed human-grade meat have greater effects. A 20kg dog on a raw food diet has a higher food-related environmental toll than most meat-eating humans, said Dr John Harvey, a veterinarian and doctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. To reduce these effects, Mr Okin recommends pet food brands that meet dietary requirements but contain less animal-derived protein. Pet food made from chicken is generally better than pork, and both tend to be better than beef. Dry food, on average, has a lower environmental impact than wet food. Vegan pet foods should be approached with caution because of potential nutritional inadequacies. That is especially true for cats. Moreover, in the US, most cats and dogs are overweight. So reducing the amount of food those animals are given would be a boon for both pet health and the environment, Dr Harvey said. And a whole lot of something else The nutrient-rich pet foods people feed their animals come out the other end as nutrient-rich pee and poop. 'It's basically a hyper-fertiliser,' Dr Harvey said of dog and cat waste. High levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in pet waste have been linked to soil contamination and water pollution. In parks and other natural areas where dog walking is popular, this influx of nutrients can even lead to biodiversity loss, Mr De Frenne said. If owners would be more responsible about cleaning up after their dogs, these effects would be lessened, said Ms Kim Maya Yavor, a doctoral candidate in sustainable engineering at the Technical University Berlin. 'With urine, there's not much to do about it, but half of this problem can be reduced by picking up your dog's faeces and throwing it away.' Those hunting instincts Free-roaming pets can also disturb or kill wildlife. 'Dogs just going through an area can have dramatic impacts on biodiversity,' Dr Harvey said. Pet predation can also have knock-on effects for other species. 'When a cat kills a mouse or vole, that animal can't be eaten by a native predator like an owl or marten,' said Professor Arie Trouwborst, a professor of nature conservation law at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Many of these problems can be solved or mitigated, he added, by keeping cats indoors and leashing dogs. The point here is not that you cannot have a companion animal or two. Being careful about pet food and pet waste, and keeping animals under your control, can help a lot. Adopt, don't shop Finally, if you are considering adding a pet to your home, it is important to consider where you are sourcing that new friend. Of the 5.8 million cats and dogs that went into US shelters and rescue centres in 2024, 607,000 were killed, according to the Shelter Animals Count, a non-profit organisation. The number of unwanted pets presents both environmental and animal welfare concerns. Adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue group, rather than buying from a breeder, can help offset these issues. 'Instead of creating a new thing, you're taking something that's already there,' said Dr Lena DeTar, a veterinarian at Cornell University. And if you are specifically looking for a pet that takes a lower environmental toll, then go for something small, Dr Harvey said. Cats and dogs also are not the only pets available, Mr Okin said. For example, rabbits and guinea pigs wind up at shelters and rescues in high numbers too. And unlike cats and dogs, they are vegetarian. NYTIMES

Three Republican-led states to deploy National Guard troops to US capital

The announcements on Saturday of troops from hundreds of miles away in West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio came a day after D.C. officials and the Trump administration negotiated a deal to keep Mayor Muriel Bowser's appointed police chief, Pamela Smith, in charge of the police department after D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit to block the federal takeover of the department. Trump, a Republican, said this week he was deploying hundreds of D.C. National Guard troops to Washington and temporarily taking over the Democratic-led city's police department to curb what he depicted as a crime and homelessness emergency. Justice Department data, however, showed violent crime in 2024 hit a 30-year low in Washington, a self-governing federal district under the jurisdiction of Congress. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey's office said in a statement he was deploying 300 to 400 National Guard troops to D.C. in "a show of commitment to public safety and regional cooperation." The statement said he also was providing equipment and specialized training. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster responded to a Pentagon request by announcing that 200 of his state's National Guard troops would be sent. TROOPS TO OTHER CITIES? The National Guard serves as a militia that answers to the governors of the 50 states except when called into federal service. The D.C. National Guard reports directly to the president. Trump, who has suggested he could take similar actions in other Democratic-controlled cities, has sought to expand the powers of the presidency in his second term, inserting himself into the affairs of major banks, law firms and elite universities. In June, Trump ordered 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, against the wishes of California's Democratic governor, during protests over mass immigration raids by federal officials. South Carolina's McMaster said his troops would immediately return to South Carolina if needed to respond to a possible hurricane or other natural disaster. Hurricane Erin, now northeast of Puerto Rico, has become a catastrophic Category 5 storm that could bring ocean swells to the U.S. East Coast early next week, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said on Saturday. National Guard troops often respond to natural disasters and rarely police U.S. civilians. Drew Galang, a spokesperson for West Virginia's Morrisey, said the state's National Guard received the order to send equipment and personnel to D.C. late on Friday and was working to organize the deployment. A White House official said on Saturday that more National Guard troops would be called in to Washington to "protect federal assets, create a safe environment for law enforcement officials to carry out their duties when required, and provide a visible presence to deter crime." A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a formal order was expected to go out that would authorize National Guard troops in D.C. to carry firearms. The official said this order would affect mostly military police officers with sidearms. Reuters has reported that the National Guard troops would have weapons nearby, such as in their vehicles. The White House said on Saturday that D.C. National Guard members have conducted patrols on foot and in vehicles around the National Mall and Union Station. The White House said the National Guard troops are not making arrests now and that they may be armed. It is not clear how the administration could deploy National Guard troops elsewhere. A federal judge in San Francisco is expected in the coming weeks to issue a ruling on whether Trump violated the law with the Los Angeles deployments. REUTERS
