'We're really confident' - Tongue insists draw not in England view ahead of thrilling final day
LEEDS, England - Fast bowler Josh Tongue insisted England only have victory in their sights ahead of the final day of a thrilling first test against India, despite the imposing 371 target set by the touring side on Monday.
Since coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes came together in 2022, England have been famed for their aggressive, win-at-all-costs approach, leading to plenty of dramatic highs, and some lows, during that time.
England have only drawn one from 35 tests under the current regime, with one of their exhilarating run chases in that spell coming when they reached 378 against India in 2022 -- the only time India have lost when defending test totals of more than 350.
Resuming on 21-0 on day five at Headingley on Tuesday, England will be looking to achieve their second-highest successful test run chase against India.
"Obviously we're really confident," Tongue, who took three wickets in four balls in the second innings to help rip through the India lower order and give England hope of victory, told reporters.
"We have a very strong battling line-up, we play a positive brand of cricket, so a 371 target would be good to chase tomorrow.
"No (draw has not been discussed). I think we just go for the win -- that's what the clear message in the changing rooms. I think it's just been as positive as we can."
Victory would also mean England chase down the second highest fourth innings target at Headingley, more than the Ben Stokes-inspired heroics on the same ground against Australia in 2019.
"Yeah, obviously I remember Stokes here against the Aussies. Like then, we have the batting line-up, I think we can chase down anything," Tongue added.
"It's just soaking up pressure and then reapplying that the pressure to put back onto the bowlers as well. I don't see why not we can't chase it." REUTERS

Duplantis says vaulting 6.40m is within the ‘realm of possibility'

PHOTO: REUTERS Duplantis says vaulting 6.40m is within the 'realm of possibility' OSTRAVA, Czech Republic - Swedish pole-vaulting star Armand Duplantis said on June 23 that clearing 6.40 metres was 'in the realm of possibility', eight days after improving his previous world record to 6.28m. The 25-year-old US-born double Olympic champion set his 12th world record at the Stockholm Diamond League meet on June 15. 'I've always believed that I'm able to keep pushing higher and of course I've shown now that I'm very, very close to 6.30 metres,' Duplantis told reporters ahead of June 24's Golden Spike meet in the Czech city of Ostrava. 'I want to keep pushing and I want to get to 6.30m as soon as possible. 'I'd like to get to 6.40m, that would be another crazy barrier of course and that also feels like in the realm of possibility for me.' Duplantis said he had been surprised that his latest world record had come in Stockholm because the set-up had not been ideal. 'I didn't feel like my best, it was probably the worst that I felt for a world record jump, honestly, before,' said Duplantis. 'I felt like I was a little bit all over the place on the day and a little bit inconsistent. But then I hit the right jump at the right time, which I guess is the most important in pole vaulting.' Setting a world record in Sweden presented Duplantis with a welcome occasion to celebrate with friends and family. 'I did celebrate it pretty hard, but I feel like I'm fully recovered now and ready to start jumping again,' he said. Duplantis also announced he is planning to release his second song this week, following on from his debut single Bop in February. 'I'm going to drop a song Friday, midnight actually, so that's pretty cool,' he said. The new song is called 4L, meaning 'For Life'. 'I dropped one song only this far but I've done tons of music the past couple of years really so that'll be fun. 'I feel like I'd like to have another hobby, I guess, maybe not distract me but just give me something else mentally.' Duplantis said he enjoyed golf but was discouraged because 'in Sweden, it's super cold'. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Botafogo deserve respect for progressing from 'group of death', says Freitas

Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Group B - Atletico Madrid v Botafogo - Rose Bowl Stadium, Pasadena, California, U.S. - June 23, 2025 Referee Cesar Arturo Ramos with Botafogo's Alexander Barboza, Botafogo's Marlon Freitas and Atletico Madrid's Rodrigo De Paul after looking at the VAR monitor and not giving Atletico Madrid a penalty REUTERS/Mike Blake PASADENA - Botafogo have defied their critics by making it to the Club World Cup last 16, captain Marlon Freitas said, even after his side lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid and finished second in Group B on Monday. Antoine Griezmann's late strike secured victory for Atletico, but it was not enough to overhaul the Brazilian side's goal difference as they finished second to Paris St Germain in Group B. Freitas emphasised the achievement of advancing to the knockout stage from what many had dubbed the "group of death". "Sure, we wanted to win, and I think we had our chances. We knew how to defend, and I believe we deserved at least a draw. Conceding that late goal was heartbreaking because we wanted to finish top of the group," Freitas told TV Globo. "However, we should celebrate because, before the tournament started, everyone thought we had no chance against two top opponents from major European leagues. We've shown the value of Brazilian football. We are champions of South America, and we deserve respect." Veteran defender Alex Telles echoed Freitas' comments. "It's difficult to talk about it right now," Telles said. "PSG and Atletico showed us more respect than most fans and pundits did. The team did what it had to do to advance to the next stage. "Here we are, those who some said came to see Mickey in Disneyland, through to the round of 16 in the group of death. Qualifying shows the work done by this incredible group of men." Botafogo will now face the Group A winners on Saturday, while PSG take on the runners-up on Sunday. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Mandatory Credit: Kyle Terada-Imagn Images REUTERS NEW YORK - Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers averaged 16.4 million viewers on Sunday, making it the most-watched Finals game in six years, the league said on Monday. The Thunder beat the Pacers 103-91 to clinch the title in a physical affair that unravelled for Indiana in the second half after point guard Tyrese Haliburton left with an Achilles injury early in the game. The viewership was welcome news for the NBA after the clash of two small-market teams yielded disappointing ratings early in the best-of-seven series. The Game 1 opener averaged 8.91 million viewers on ABC, according to Sports Media Watch, the lowest viewership for the Finals opener in the Nielsen era, outside of the two COVID-affected seasons. The series that was short on starpower ended with the Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander capping one of the best individual seasons in NBA history. The 26-year-old became only the fourth player - and the first since Shaquille O'Neal in 2000 - to earn the scoring title as well as league and Finals MVP honours in the same season.
