First-ever sighting of African Catfish in Iraq's marshes

Shafaq News/ The African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) has been documented for the first time in the Al-Chibayish marshes of Dhi Qar province on Tuesday, marking a new scientific milestone recorded by the Al-Chibayish Environmental Organization. In a press release, the organization explained that this discovery marks the second official record of the species in Iraq, following earlier observations in the Tigris River near Baghdad and Mosul by researchers from the University of Baghdad. However, it constitutes the first documentation of the species within the marshland ecosystem, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The research team called for close monitoring of the species and urged assessment of its impact on biodiversity in the marshes. It warned that the fish could expand at the expense of native species, potentially causing imbalances that would be difficult to reverse. The species belongs to the catfish family and is characterized by a long dorsal fin running along the body, a rounded caudal fin, and four pairs of sensory barbels. These features grant it strong sensory abilities and high resilience in muddy and turbid waters, aiding its adaptation and reproduction in new environments. Scientists classify the African catfish as an invasive alien species, raising environmental concerns over its potential effects on local species and the delicate ecological balance of the marshes, one of the region's richest yet most fragile ecosystems.

Iraq close to agreement with China on Nuclear Training Reactor

By John Lee. Iraq's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, who also heads the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission (IAEC), has announced that three sites within the Tuwaitha complex southeast of Baghdad are now confirmed to be free of radioactive contamination. Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Al-Aboudi said the cleared sites include the former French LAMA Laboratories, the Italian radioisotope production facility, and the Tamuz-2 research reactor. He affirmed that all sites underwent thorough radiation surveys conducted using precise scientific methodologies and in coordination with national institutions. The results confirmed that no radioactive residues remain that could pose a risk to public health. In a related development, the Minister announced that Iraq is close to signing an agreement with the China National Nuclear Corporation to establish the country's first subcritical training reactor. This educational project will support the development of student and researcher skills in nuclear physics and peaceful radiation technologies. (Source: Ministry of Higher Education)

PM Calls on Youth to Lead Iraq's Environmental Transformation

By John Lee. On the occasion of World Environment Day , Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani attended the National Conference for Young Environmental Pioneers at Al-Mustansiriyah University, where he highlighted the essential role of youth in raising environmental awareness and advancing sustainable practices in Iraq. During the event, the Prime Minister planted a tree in the university's garden as a symbolic gesture in support of the initiative. Emphasizing that over 60 percent of Iraq's population is under the age of 30, he stated that this demographic strength must be mobilised to meet environmental and developmental challenges. In his speech, Al-Sudani stressed that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility-not limited to the government-and urged the expansion of youth-led voluntary environmental activities. Key initiatives highlighted include: Launch of The Al-Khair Initiative to empower youth in agriculture, food security, and climate action. Formation of a National Youth Climate Action Team with 1,000 members across all provinces. Government backing for major environmental conferences, including the Carbon Economics Conference (Baghdad) and the Iraq Climate Conference (Basra). New regulations on pollution sources and transformation of industrial plants into eco-friendly facilities. Expansion of afforestation efforts using modern agricultural spraying technology. Launch of a Waste-to-Energy Power Plant Project in Al-Nahrawan (100 MW capacity). Upgrades to wastewater treatment systems on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Signing of water cooperation agreements with Türkiye to implement modern water management systems. Commitment to end gas flaring by 2027, supported by international contracts and investment. Adoption of the National Initiative for Environmental Monitoring and Inspection. Increased investment in scientific research, emission reduction, and natural area protection. The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming Iraq's commitment to climate goals and sustainable development, while calling on youth to play a leading role in shaping a greener future. (Source: PMO)
