Reliance's Jio Platforms launches JioPC: What is it, how it works, and more

Jio Platforms, an arm of Reliance Industries, has launched a virtual desktop service in India that eliminates the need to purchase an external CPU. Essentially, it is a cloud-based virtual desktop service that runs through its set-top box. With this, any TV connected to a Jio set-top box can turn into a full-fledged personal computer. Users will require a keyboard and a mouse to make use of this PC, though. This service is currently in a free trial phase and can be accessed through a Jio set-top box.
What is JioPC
JioPC is a new virtual desktop service introduced by Jio Platforms that transforms any TV connected to a Jio Set Top Box into a cloud-powered personal computer. Designed to bring affordable computing to Indian households, especially in areas with low PC penetration, JioPC offers access to essential desktop functions like web browsing, document editing, and virtual learning. With this move, Jio aims to leverage its broadband reach and growing TV user base to bridge India's digital divide.
How JioPC works
JioPC operates entirely through the cloud and runs on Jio's existing Set Top Box, which comes bundled with JioFiber plans or can be purchased separately. Once activated, users can access a virtual desktop interface on their TV using a keyboard and mouse. The system comes preloaded with LibreOffice and supports access to Microsoft Office via a web browser.
While advanced peripherals like cameras and printers are currently unsupported, the platform is optimised for basic computing tasks. This makes it a practical solution for students, casual users, and anyone without a traditional PC setup. Notably, users will always need an active internet connection for the PC to function.
How to use JioPC
Open the JioPC App: Power on your TV connected to the Jio Set Top Box, go to the apps section, and select the JioPC icon.
Connect keyboard and mouse: Plug in a USB or Bluetooth-enabled keyboard and mouse to the Set Top Box.
Set up your JioPC account: Your personal details will auto-fill — simply click on 'Continue' to proceed.
Start using JioPC: Hit 'Launch Now' to begin using your cloud desktop for work, education, or entertainment.

Railways implements CCTV cameras at level crossings

Hubballi: Indian railways is enhancing safety and efficiency across its network with the mandatory installation of CCTV cameras at all manned non-interlocked level crossing gates. Mukul Saran Marhur, general manager, SWR, told TOI that this nationwide deployment follows a highly successful pilot project by SWR. "Initial implementation in the high-traffic Hosapete area of Hubballi division proved the system's viability and immediate benefits. All CCTV equipment meets the stringent specifications of the Research Design and Standards Organisation of the railway ministry. The system also includes remote access capabilities for authorised personnel," he stated. Hubballi divisional railway manager Bela Meena said each manned non-interlocked LC gate will now feature a minimum of two IP-enabled CCTV cameras, one on each side, along with essential infrastructure like Network Video Recorders (NVR), Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems and solar panels. "Real-time video feeds will be accessible to Station Masters and Engineering Control, ensuring continuous monitoring. It can be a game-changer, giving Station Masters invaluable direct monitoring of gate operations and ensuring hassle-free movements of trains. This is a win-win situation for both road and rail users," she said. Mahendra Singhi, member of the Zonal Railway Users' Consultative Committee, Hubballi, appreciated SWR for taking up such an initiative on a pilot basis and making it successful to adopt across the nation.

Reliance Retail acquires home appliances brand Kelvinator

Reliance Retail MUMBAI: Reliance Retail has acquired home appliances brand Kelvinator for India from Sweden's Electrolux as it looks to expand market share in the consumer durables space, stepping up competition against global and local giants such as Samsung and Tata's Voltas in the market. Reliance Retail has already been holding manufacturing and distribution rights for the brand in India since 2019 through a licensing deal signed with its Swedish owner. The company did not disclose the financial specifics of the deal. In an earnings update, Electrolux, however, said that it has realised a gain of about $18.5 million (around Rs 160 crore) from the divestment of the Kelvinator brand in India. A licensing deal is typically signed for a certain period of time; a full acquisition expands a company's scope and coverage for the brand. Kelvinator which sells a range of premium refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners had first entered India in 1960s and became popular in the local market in the 1970s and 80s before competition in the space intensified. The brand has had a chequered history in India—Whirlpool for India had acquired the brand in 1995 to gain access to the refrigerator category and later it went on to get acquired by Videocon Industries in the mid 2000s, eventually being relaunched by Reliance Retail in 2019. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Reliance Retail already sells Kelvinator products through Reliance Digital stores, e-commerce platforms and its general trade partners. Monthly user churn was 1.8%. Jio's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (ebitda) rose 24% on-year and 6.6% sequentially to ₹ 18,135 crore in the June quarter. Ebitda margin rose 1.7 percentage points sequentially to 51.8%. According to Jio's investor presentation, the company is also seeing strong traction in its cloud gaming platform Jio Games, its cloud storage platform JioAICloud, and JioPC, its virtual desktop. Jio said it is ready to take its 5G stack with cloud native core network to global markets. Total data traffic rose 24% on-year and 11.9% sequentially to 54.7 billion GB in the June quarter, helped by the growth of the company's fibre broadband and AirFiber users. Monthly average data consumption per user on the company's network was 37 GB, up from 33.6 GB in the preceding three months and 30.3 GB in the corresponding year-ago period.
